The Scoop: The name of Chuck Schuldiner is one of legend in the Metal world for his innovative technique and skillful displays of brutality in his band Death. Formed way back in 1983 by the guitarist, the band paved the way for the still growing Death Metal scene and while not its first provider of mayhem, Chuck is often referred to as “The Father Of Death Metal” based on his incredible contributions. The band released seven studio albums and Chuck also had a group called Control Denied which he helmed after Death’s disbanding and sadly in 2001 we would lose this talented musician who died of pneumonia while at the same time was dealing with brain cancer. His music would never be forgotten and now in 2014, musicians who had been a part of Deaths rich history will unite and perform in honor of Chuck to bring us the brutality once again. This years event is called “The Swamp Leper Stomp” and it shall also offer up some material by Obituary, Massacre and Rivers Of Nihil. Cooler still is the means to put a couple of lucky PiercingMetal fans into the Best Buy Theater thanks to their marketing mavens. Read on for contest details.

The music of Death was remastered and released on expanded editions not too long ago and I’ve embedded codes to a bunch of them for you to investigate and possibly add to your library.
Chuck took Metal to a new extreme it got heavier and faster. He knew something was there after what Thrash started he went above and beyond with the first the album Scream Bloody Gore. The fact he went from playing Traditional Death Metal to Progressive Death Metal was a huge deal and took the genre to new level. Then you got the other bands after Death like Obituary and Morbid Angel from U.S., Sepultura from Brazil, Naplam Death and Bolt Thrower from Europe. You can’t defined Death Metal cause there so many bands that are different from each other.
Ill give you list of bands that best defined the Death after Death.
1. Obituary
2. Morbid Angel
3. Cannibal Corpse
4. Naplam Death
5. Pestilence
“I don’t think I should take the credits for this death metal stuff. I’m just a guy from a band, and I think Death is a metal band.” Chuck was one of the most humble pioneers of death metal; he was able to create a sound unlike any other. Scream Bloody Gore became a template for death metal, differentiating itself from the musical structure of thrash metal and black metal. Death used faster riffs and solos with fast drummer that really created a clear difference. If it wasn’t for Death who knows what we would all be listening too!
Death paved the way for bands like: Obituary, Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, and Deicide (all also having some influence in the Florida metal scene). Well all I know is if wasn’t for Death or Chuck, I don’t know what I would be listening to.
Chuck Schuldiner took the metal genre to the next level, not only musically, through his amazing guitar playing and song writing skills, but lyrically as well, especially with the last couple of albums that introduced us to themes such as the increasing individual alienation, vanishing privacy, political lies and spiritual struggles. Chuck influenced not only 80’s and early 90’s death metal scene, but also newer metal bands such as Scar Symmetry or Omnium Gatherum that chise the more progressive approach of the latter Death albums.
Where do I even begin? I don’t even know where I would be without Death. Death are not only a band, but they are legends. Without Death I wouldn’t be listening to the music I listen to today because not only did they have such a significance influence on me but other bands I listen to. If it wasn’t for Death so many of the bands I listen to today wouldn’t exist and I can’t thank them enough. Chuck was truly a living legend who inspired me to play guitar. I remember the first time I listened to Death. My friend let me borrow his copy of “Leprosy” and I was instantly hooked. To this day Leprosy is till my favorite album. Now this Sunday I have the chance to see the closest thing to Death I’ll ever get to see. Death and Obituary are two of my favorite death metal bands so I couldn’t have asker for a better show. Seriously, without Death I don’t think Obituary would even exist, the face that they are playing together is unbelievable it’s like a dream come true. I really can’t miss this show at Best Buy Theater for anything but I am broke. I would just mean the world to me. To me Death mean something more than just a band. They are the pioneers of death metal and helped me get through so much stuff. I really wish Chuck was still alive today, he had the most amazing vocals and guitarwork, I’ve never seen anybody like him. I really wish that somebody I can be anywhere close to as good as he was. Many people say that Death to All is not the same without Chuck but I beg to differ, I believe that the spirit of Chuck will still be present in concert. He is the DEATH METAL GOD! I digress, going to see Death to All AND Obituary would be an honor, truly two of my favorite death metal bands who have made such a signifcant impact on death metal, not to mention the two other awesome bands, Rivers of Nihil and Massacre. That being said, death metal pioneers Death to Obituary, Cannibal Corpse and Morbid Angel are bands that truly define the death metal genre and without them I wouldn’t be here typing this trying to go to a concert that would pretty much make my life.
Hello Francesco, that is some good stuff so let me be frank and say “congratulations on winning one of our Death To All tickets”. Please stand by for the details in the closing comments from me that explain everything needed to claim it at the show.
Awesome!!! Thanks!! Can’t wait for the show!
Chuck Schuldiner’s Death was arguably, one of the best bands in Extreme Metal history. Without question, the first Death Metal band to stand out of the scene. Acquiring influences from Thrash and Speed metal bands was clear, but injecting brutality out of fast pace/heavier drumming and face grinding guitar riffs were the essentials to start a new genre. That’s where Scream Bloody Gore did. No matter how heavy their debut album was for its time, I’ll personally consider Leprosy (1988) to be the “cherry on top”. Not only more mature than their previous album, but inspiring to what was about to come for “Heavier” bands. A heavy metal trademark. Leaving that aside, he expanded the genre with abstract and melodic ideas that not only described Death Metal as just fast paced music, but intelligent and meaningful. Without Chuck, who would know if the subgenre would be the same and listenable?
Autopsy, Morbid Angel, Obituary, Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation were bands that innovated the Death Metal sound to more technical, brutal, and once again, it became the essentials to the sub-genre.
I feel like one of the biggest contributions Death and Chuck made to death metal besides the sound itself was that he pretty much made it clear that death metal didn’t always have to be about anything satanic or anti religious or religiously associated to anything. He showed that you could be a band with one of the heaviest and brutal-est sounds and not have much association with that, I remember watching this interview with Chuck and he saying that’s also the main reason why he altered the death logo from an inverted cross to a more traditional cross he wanted to break any bridges to that aspect of things. He definitely influenced the genre in its sound as well it was definitely much faster and much heavier pulling little characteristics from other genres and incorporating them into the death sound. You can definitely feel some of Death’s influence in bands like Morbid Angel, Obituary, and Cannibal Corpse. Chuck was always such a positive guy and so humble about everything. Things definitely would not be the same without his vision.
