I’ve been enjoying the DC Animated features for a few years now and quite honestly I think I like them a lot more than the actual big screen live-action films for the most part. For me they are better extensions of the comic book page and with that please allow me to share the latest film being offered up “Justice League Dark”. I’ve got some additional thoughts at the close as well so dig in.
About The Film: Justice League Dark is an upcoming 2017 American animated superhero film produced by Warner Bros. Animation and distributed by Warner Home Video. Featuring the DC Comics team of the same name created by Peter Milligan and Mikel Janin, the film will be the twenty-seventh film in the DC Universe Animated Original Movies series. It is set to be released digitally on January 24, 2017 and on DVD and Blu-ray on February 7, 2017. The film is directed by Jay Oliva, and stars the voices of Matt Ryan, Jason O’Mara, Camilla Luddington, Nicholas Turturro, and Ray Chase. It will be the first Justice League film and the second DC Universe animated film to receive an R rating from the MPAA.
The Premise: A group of occult heroes – John Constantine, Zatanna, Deadman, Etrigan the Demon and Swamp Thing – unite as a new intrepid team to deal with supernatural threats that the Justice League wouldn’t often handle. (this and the just above come care of the Official Wiki entry).
The Cast:
Matt Ryan as John Constantine
Jason O’Mara as Bruce Wayne/Batman
Camilla Luddington as Zatanna
Nicholas Turturro as Boston Brand/Deadman
Ray Chase as Jason Blood/Etrigan the Demon
Jerry O’Connell as Clark Kent/Superman
Rosario Dawson as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman
Jeremy Davies as Ritchie Simpson
Enrico Colantoni as Felix Faust
Alfred Molina as Destiny
Roger Cross as Swamp Thing and John Stewart/Green Lantern
Black Orchid is also confirmed to appear but has yet to be cast.
PiercingMetal Thoughts: The Justice League Dark title was one of my favorites from “The New 52” line when it began so I am glad to find this coming to “life” on the screen if only on a home video. It’s great to have Matt Ryan doing the Constantine role in voice since he was so perfect at it in his cancelled live action show. Hopefully The CW will make more use of him like they did in “Arrow” that one episode. This feature really looks good but the Deadman voice is horrible. While we don’t see them listed in the lined out cast, one can only hope that an appearance by The Spectre and The Phantom Stranger are in this film. Rumor has it that we shall see a live-action film for these characters and with the track record that Warner Brothers Pictures has for these DC Comics properties already I am not too keen on that. Let me know what you thought of the film’s trailer in the comments below.
