Artist: Type-O-Negative
Venue: L’Amour – Brooklyn
Opener: Lacuna Coil
Date: 9/19-9/20/2003
This weekend (Sept 19 & 20th) saw the band Type-O-Negative returning to home ground at Brooklyn’s L’Amour. They hit the stage with the band Lacuna Coil opening for them. Sad to inform that I missed Lacuna Coil at theL’Amour show, but did see them at the T.O.N. Show at Irving Plaza a few weeks ago. They are quite good.
After about 30 minutes of Circus music, the crowd chants of “you suck”, “you suck” began until the band came out. Now, those that have never been to see them play before should please be aware that the audience really does not think they suck, this is just part of the fun. Usually Peter has a comment to them , but this weekend he did not.
After the first tune, Peter explained how good it was to be home (since the club is where they started out, being all Brooklyn boys). He announced this club was the best place to end a tour (as this was the last night of the short tour they were doing for their newest release “Life Is Killing Me”) and it was great to be back among friends. I lucked out and was added to the guest list for Saturdays show where the only difference in the set list was Peter starting N.I.B. only to have the band tell him they would not play it. This led him into “I Dont Wanna Be Me”
One of the funniest moment was at the end of the show when all the music stopped Peter yells “I’ve Got Blisters On My Penis!!!” (which was a similar quote done by Ringo Star of the Beatles at the end of the Helter Skelter recording….of course Ringo had them on his fingers). While I would have enjoyed a few more tunes hence a little longer set, I did think they sounded great. Powerful, moody and entertaining. I have been a fan of this band since the early 90’s and have seen them about 17 times, not regretted any shows yet.
Lastly, Peter also decided to step out of character and be serious with the audience when he said “you know, this band has been together for 14 years and he sees a lot of the same faces every time they play. The group truly appreciates the support”.
