The Adventures Of Powerglove @ New York Comic Con 2010

Warning: This blog posting is rated “I.I.” for “Incredibly Immature”.  Now with you all warned and advised we can get down to the business at hand and that is to explore a little deeper into the past weekends adventuring which was the one and only NY Comic Con & Anime Festival.  This massive event which was held at the Javits center over the course of three days will be discussed in full in some future blog narratives so please stay tuned for them.  This particular article is to discuss the appearance of those Video Game Metal maniacs – The Mighty Powerglove who were in attendance at the Con and wreaking havoc at both their own booth and around the exhibition hall of the convention itself.  PiercingMetal.com was covering the convention and spent some time with The Glove and proudly present to you some of the more memorable moments in words and images.

The Logo of the Mighty Powerglove

Since there is a good chance that you are not yet aware of just who Powerglove is, let me explain that they are considered “Video Game Metal” and came into many peoples attention by playing the themes of popular video games such as “Tetris”, “Sonic The Hedge Hog” and “Mario Brothers”.  These songs and many others were amped up to the Nth degree and given interesting titles such as “So Sexy Robotnic”, “Mario Minor”, “Vanquish The Horrible Night” and well, you get the point. You can find all of these songs on the bands independent release Metal Kombat for the Mortal Man but I recommend that you get one quick before fame goes to their heads and a copy costs you hundreds upon hundreds of dollars on E-bay.

Behold – Powerglove

Here we find the Powerglove chaps in dramatic pose right next to their official Comic Con 2010 Booth.  If you had gone to the convention and didn’t manage to find them it was understandable based on the glut of humanity but at the same time it was unforgivable as they were located right near the Femme Fatales and the IGN Booths and each of the three were getting a lot of attention today.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove
Powerglove’s Alex B. & Chris M.

The band was celebrating the very recently released “Saturday Morning Apocalypse” which comes care of E1 Entertainment (that was once Koch Records for those losing track).  The photo above finds the bands guitar players Alex and Chris showcasing the recording and as you can also see Chris is really giving it the thumbs up.  Uhm, Chris, I think you meant to point in the other direction.  Cut.  Let’s try that one again, oh never mind, we’ll have to run it.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove
Powerglove’s Bassil Silver

Here’s the bands drummer Bassil sporting a brand new Vic Firth baseball cap. This appears to be the latest design from the quality stick maker and when I learned that Bassil was a drummer that used them, I just had to make sure he had one of their hats as well.

Powerglove Goes To Japan

The Guys decided that it might be good to cater to the Japanese fan base very early on and here we see them trying to firm up some appearances at the legendary Budokan with some very pretty Japanese tourists.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove

Always interested in the influence their music has on the youth of today, we find the Powerglove boys at the ready to entertain with some young fans.  These are actually my friend Dave’s kids and a shot of him is coming later on in the adventure.  Emily and Conner really do love what Powerglove is all about and now are the envy of friends after meeting them in person at the Con.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove

Here’s bassist Nick with a dude whose name I forgot but he said he was doing some kind of music blog related thing so I wanted to let him get some time in the sun with the mighty Glove.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove

The band saw that some characters from both Street Fighter and X-Men were hanging around the IGN Booth so we all wandered over and employed their green screen for a few minutes.  Pictured from left to right we find Bassil, Cammy, Nick, X-23 and Alex.  Sadly guitarist Chris had to remain at the booth and make sure no one made off with CD’s.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove

This Cosplayer was dressed to the nines and looked perfect with the Powerglove lads for sure.  This kind of outfit would work great during the bands live show in the background fighting some sort of creature while the band plays.  In case you are wondering, the girl is dressed as Yoko from Gurren Lagann (thanks Ting) and this is an Anime series that is a spin off from another.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove

There were many shots taken in front of the green screen with the Street Fighting team but we only posted a couple of them.  For your enjoyment please uhm….enjoy.

2 Of The Glove & Fan Rob

Here’s two members of Powerglove with one of the fans.  That’s Alex, Chris and Rob from L2R.  These next ones were funny and come with a story.  As I walked the halls of the Con, I met these two blue girls and found out they were part of a group called “Alien Surfer Babes”.  I told them that photos of them and Powerglove would be awesome so we wandered back to the booth to snap images with the guys.

Chris Marchiel & The Alien Surfer Babes

Guitarist Chris was the first to pose with the ASB’s and please do not adjust your video monitor settings because the girls are really, really blue.  Of course they are blue in a good way.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove
Powerglove meets the Alien Surfer Babes

A great shot of the whole Powerglove band with the Alien Surfer Babes.  Sadly I don’t know much more about them other than they are a Surf Pop vocal group.  I’m intrigued to say the least and hope I hear from them again.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove
Powerglove’s Bassil with The Alien Surfer Babes

I know Bassil, it’s like the song says; “it’s a hard knock life”.  Someone’s gotta do it though.

Powerglove @ The Signing Table

At one point during the Comic Con the boys went over to what was called “Autograph Alley” and this was directly next to “Artists Alley” in terms of location.  From here they would sign CD’s and speak to any of the fans that were interested in finding them here for that.  I was not around much for this part and dealing with other Con activity so I am not too sure how it went.

3/4’s of Powerglove and Big Dave Sharpe

Many years ago I interned at Marvel Comics and made some great friends.  Many of them I had not seen since that time even though the occasional email or hang time was done.  One such dude not seen in more than a decade was Dave Sharpe who is a big Metal fan on top of being a big ass dude to boot.  Dave has a band called “Dead Cowboy” and is a comics writer as well as letterer.  He’s worked on books such as Deadpool, Ms. Marvel and many more.  He knows the Metal so it was great to get a shot of him and Powerglove.  Those were his kids in an earlier shot.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove
Powerglove & Zatanna

The time in Artists Alley was definitely time well spent because this was where all the major players were showcasing their wares and doing sketches for fans and speaking to them.  The band was going over well in this region also and if you don’t believe me here is a shot of the lovely Zatanna weaving her spells on the band in order to get a good photo with them.  To those who don’t know the character, she’s a long time DC Comics magic heroine and daughter of Zatara.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove

I was not really sure what these two young ladies were supposed to be, but they looked great and wanted a photo.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove

Meanwhile back at the Powerglove booth, the CD’s and merchandise continues to fly out of the bands possession…

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove

…and into the hands of Video Game Metal hungry fans from all walks of life.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove
Powerglove, “Alfred” and Robin the Girl Wonder

After successfully ditching Batman, we found Robin (now the Girl Wonder) pausing for a moment with Powerglove and World Entertainment’s own Alexander Ford.  Of course with two Alex’s to deal with the band had taken to calling him “Alfred” for the duration of the Con.  Take a look at his hands in the lower left hand corner, that is a now empty box of CD’s he is holding.  The band was doing quite well with this appearance that is for sure and when it was all tallied up seemed to have sold almost 300 of their major label debut album.  Not too shabby.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove
Powerglove & Robin, The Girl Wonder

Some different faces from the Powerglove’s and our last goodbye’s to Robin before she had to get back to the Batcave. Take care Miss, you be safe and don’t take any shit from the Joker.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove
Powerglove’s Nick Is Up To Something

Here we find the bands bassist and non-singing front man wandering the wonders of the Comic Con. He sure looks like he was up to something but at this point I had not been around the guys with so much other things to document at this massively attended event. I would catch up with them a little more later on in the day.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove

Bassil wanders the Comic Con like a wide-eyed youth as all of the interesting sights around him give him equally inquisitive looks.  His banners were clearly making his movement slow and sometimes not too easy.  I teased him and said all he needed was a pair of trumpeters announcing his arrival.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove

Here’s Nick and Bassil from Powerglove with the amazing Madeline (I think that is what she said her name was).  She is a performer as well I was later told.  Loved that hair and was in awe of it’s majesty.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove
Powerglove & Chun-Li

Here’s a shot of the guys and a young lady who I learned was Cosplaying as an alternately dressed Chun-Li from the “Street Fighter” game.  I had to take her word for it since I don’t remember the last time I played the game.  I generally lose the moment my opponent appears in the fighting games so I prefer the space and other shooter types more.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove

Another moment in the sun for the Powerglove lads Alex and Bassil and this time with a Cosplayer dressed as who I thought was a female version of the Mad Hatter.  When I said this I was given a look, and hey I cannot keep up on every single comic trend.  So there.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove
Powerglove & X-23

The sexy danger that is our lovely X-23 returned to our lens once again and this time the claws were out (get it, there is a Wolverine reference in there for you).  I joked with the lass and said how her weapons made it look as if she was always holding the horns up for the Metal.  In real life she is known as Sana K.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove
More Metal Madness with X-23 & Powerglove

A slightly different pose of the boys and the seductive X-23.  Of course, don’t tell her she is seductive or those claws will do their work.  Ouch.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove
Powerglove & Chondra Echert

Here’s Powerglove with Angry Ink Comics writer Chondra Echert. Chondra actually co-created the comic “Kill Audio” with Coheed and Cambria’s Claudio Sanchez.  The book was available in a regular and signed edition at the convention in the Angry Ink Comics booth. We snapped a shot of Claudio which will be viewable in the main Comic Con narratives when they each post.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove
Powerglove & An IGN Girl

One of the girls handing the affairs of the IGN Booth came over to talk to the guys and we told her that she should also pose for a photo.  I was glad to see her keeping the spirit of the Metal in her shot.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove

I snapped another one since the guys were making some different faces in it.  At this point it was Alex who said he had never taken this many pictures in his life.  Sorry Alex, there are worse things to be worried about :p

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove
Powerglove’s Bassil & Chun-Li

The lovely but always deadly Chun-Li returns to the Powerglove table for some additional fun photo moments.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove

A second snap as Miss Li instructed me that the shot was better with “more leg”.  I will never argue with that and in the end I agree that she was correct.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove
Powerglove & Chun-Li Spring Into Action

Our leggy super-fighter was a lot of fun to have hanging with the Powerglove boys and here we see the whole bunch of them ready to strike while the glorious Powerglove itself lies just out of reach.  It’s in the center of the frame bottom near the laptop screen if you don’t see it right away.  Thanks to Ting Sun (that’s who Chun-Li really was) for being a fantastic sport today.  You are one in a million Cosplayers.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove
Powerglove meets the Painted Lady

It sounds like the title of a Saturday afternoon serial picture when one says “Powerglove meets the Painted Lady” aloud in dramatic fashion but in truth its the boys once again and this time joining them for the shot was a well….painted lady.  I caught sight of this young lass walking around with her bodyguard and the artist that painted her and I was glad she somehow ended up next to the Powerglove booth.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove

This was a very interesting display to say the least and the work on the young lady was done by artist Andy Golub.  I looked him up and apparently he has been doing this kind of art for a long time.  You’re not seeing things as the girl is topless but painted in a way to not cause a ruckus.  Well, she was getting some serious attention from the fans at the convention that is for sure.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove
Powerglove, The Painted Lady & Artist Andy Golub

We had to give the artist himself some camera time since he did such a fine job.  I do think that by the end of the convention that the young lady had never experienced anything like this before and might re-negotiate her rate for such appearances in the future.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove
Powerglove and Cammy

Taking a moment from her appearances at the IGN Booth we found another Street Fighter character in Cammy coming over to the Powerglove booth to take a couple of photos.  We gladly obliged including her in the mix when it was learned that she was a very big Metal head.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove
More Cammy with Powerglove

One more shot for you all.  She was also a pretty cool chick and totally was in the spirit of the Con.  Too bad the band didn’t have the theme from “Street Fighter” on their CD’s since that would have been super cool.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove
Powerglove versus The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants

They did have the theme from the X-Men cartoon and when these villainous mutants came a calling they made sure to spin it from the CD for them.  That’s Magneto and Mystique from L2R in case you didn’t realize.  I was really happy that they had this theme on the CD and it made me realize that I need to find those complete series DVD’s of that particular cartoon.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove

Now it was time to have a little fun with drummer Bassil and the legendary Powerglove.  Since we were surrounded by super-heroes I had some interesting comic-esque shots in mind and Bassil being shy as he is complied.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove

I had to shoot this one again because we had an errant arm of someone else in the shot.  This had a whole “Thor” feel to it.  You know what I mean right?  The whole “Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall posses the power of Thor”.  Methinks the lads in Powerglove need to have a grandiose heroic statement like that of the Thunder God.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove
Dare I Say “Fits Like A Glove”?

By the look of it, I guess Bassil be worthy.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove
Powerglove meets The Empire

This Stormtrooper was heading off to find more Rebel troops but when I told him that I needed a photo of him and the Powerglove guys as a direct order from Lord Vader he stopped in his tracks and let me do it.  It was really fun keeping the characters in play during the course of the Con.  Why ruin it.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove
Powerglove versus The Femme Fatales

The Powerglove booth was located directly next to that of the Femme Fatales booth so we got a quick shot of these bringers of death with the band.  If kick ass action and hot chicks dishing out the justice is your thing then you will likely enjoy the videos and web episodes that they have.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove
Let The Metal Games Begin

And now it was time for some epic battling so we rallied up the band and those IGN ladies and pitted them against one another.  One one side Bassil, Nick and Chris who would fight against x-23, Cammy and wait, what’s that…Alex from Powerglove.  Wow, talk about a surprise.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove
“To The Death!!!”

The melee is now and X-23 looks like she has sized up her opponent Nick already.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove
“Let No Quarter Be Given”

The claws are out and the battle is on.  Check out Chris in the back in his crane stance.  Right out of Karate Kid.  Never mess with the crane stance.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove

It wasn’t long before both sides came to an agreement and decided to join forces once again.  For the record the part of X-23 was played by the also lovely Sana.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove
Powerglove meets Pokemon

If you’ve not heard the album yet, you might like to know that they do the theme from “Pokemon” so it was awesome to find these two Cosplayer’s dressed in character from the cult-favorite cartoon.   Quick thinking had the song playing in the background for the shot, but you will just have to let it play in your mind for the purpose of this narration.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove
Powerglove meets Pokemon part Deux

Some more with the Pokemon kids since the Powerglove album has the song on their twice.  One version is instrumental while the other is sung by Sonata Arctica’s own Tony Kakko.  This version was in continual rotation during the convention and I am sure that it helped add to the interest.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove
The Buckle Of Glove…..

Is that a belt buckle above your zipper or are you just happy to see Powerglove?    This was one of the coolest things I saw from an up and coming band and I had to admire their zeal and belief in their own project by spending the money to make these.  I guarantee that this will be a collector’s item one day.  It could happen so you better find one.

ny comic con, ny comic con 2010, powerglove
PiercingMetal Ken and Powerglove

Closing up this little adventurous narrative comes a shot of me and the boys in Powerglove.  I too was offering up some support to Vic Firth as they gave me a cool lanyard and also tossing out some props to our friends at Rock Fantasy in Middletown who are getting ready to celebrate 25 years in business.  This shot made me feel like I was on the cover of one of those classic Marvel Team-Ups that I used to read in my youth.  Maybe I could get the attention of Mr. Stan Lee and see if he wants to write something.  OK Ken, time to wake up and cover the rest of the convention.

Oh and before I forget, once it was all said and done, I asked the guys what they thought of the overall experience about the band attending the Con and here is what they had to say about the matter:

“Comic Con was fucking awesome. It was incredible to be amongst so many comic book and video game lovers alike. We felt right at home even while walking around the convention in our ridiculous oversized costumes, talking and hanging out with fellow nerds and costumed aficionados”.

– Bassil Silver (drummer)

“The entire convention was an unforgettable and overstimulating experience for us. We had never seen so many nerds bonded together than the 100,000 at NYC Comic Con. The attendees ranged from small children to dudes with long hair and Emperor shirts, giant robots, and even to my surprise… women!”

– Nick Avila (bass guitar)

  1. I’m so glad I met you guys in NYCC, You’re all so cool and I’ve been a fan since the first album. Keep being awesome!! I was the Inuyasha cosplayer… I happily got a shirt, and my friend got an awesome belt buckle. I hope I get to run into you guys again!!

  2. Comic Con was amazing, and meeting two of the guys from Powerglove made it all the more so. Chris and I discussed the band’s history and it was really cool to discover how they were originally a melodic death metal band, which, to be honest, didn’t surprise me all that much. I love the new album and can’t wait to see these guys at Fontana’s Bar and with Firewind. Thanks again for the pic Ken!

  3. Powerglove is so awesome! Thanks to Ken I found out about these guys and I definitely appreciate how he keeps me in the loop with all this!

    Amazing stuff, Ken! As always.

  4. The convention staff along with volunteers were awesome and everybody was super helpful, cheery, as well as just frakking nice. They seemed in the same way happy to be there as many of the attendees, and from my past experience, that is not forever the situation. The actual convention employees were also pleasant (not like those on Wizard World in Anaheim last spring). Powerglove ruled.
