I’ve been listening to the music of Pink Floyd for as long as I can remember and as result of this, their epic concept album “The Wall” has remained one of my personal favorites for many, many years. Historically speaking when “The Wall” was first toured for by Floyd, there were not a lot of shows done based on the incredibly daunting production that it was. It was 1980 when it initially came to the United States and I remember that even my Mother wanted to check this one out and bring me along. At the time I was still relatively new to live concerts but sadly we never ended up getting tickets so the show would not be something I could reflect upon at this point in time. I’ve surely made up for lost time as a music scribe and that made being on point to see Waters deliver his magnum opus with his solo band at the no longer new Yankee Stadium something that I was very much looking forward to. The musician made sure to get two shows arranged for the region and that was a very good thing to find happening. I attended the Friday evening performance which went something like this.
The Wall was set up already of course and the arriving fans were treated to the enormous visual that spanned from one side of the stadiums back field to the other. Some of the bricks had even reached into the stands and that was just an amazing visual which really tended to lose a little something if you were standing too close. There were numerous platforms and once the house lights went out and the first chords of “In The Flesh” began it was not unlike a fast paced thrill ride for the senses. Two military personnel had first done some miming with a large puppet that I assume was “Pink” like in the concepts story and when his defiant fist found him crumpled on the ground near the attending media it was on. Roger appeared to thunderous applause and donned a uniform of his own as he took us through the introductory piece. Platforms elevated banner holding soldiers and The Wall transformed into a giant multi-media video screen at the same time. Unbelievable and a presentation that found my jaw dropped and heart beating faster than was healthy. It had begun.

Ladies and gentlemen of The Metal Republic we were witnessing a time of absolute chaos because it seemed that indeed Hell had frozen over. Okay, so maybe that is just a little dramatic but let’s be honest with each other here for a second. When did you ever think that you would see these four titans of the Thrash Metal movement doing any shows together? To me this was one of those kinds of events that you only postulated about happening when you talked to your Metal colleagues while hanging out and debating this stuff and yet here we were and it was truly happening. Actually, it had already happened over in Europe several months ago when you think about it. Despite that, it was amazing to know that Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax would be performing together under the title of “The Big Four” in the United States and after a successful event over in California, this evening it would be taking place at the home of the world’s greatest baseball franchise, the one and only Yankee Stadium. For me this would be the second time that I ever attended a show at this particular space – Oh wait, that was at the “Old” Yankee Stadium. Sorry friends. The running order of the show would be Anthrax first followed by Megadeth and then Slayer with Metallica closing up the entire event. That worked for me and I felt that all bands were in the proper order when it came down to the overall popularity of each of them. I was fortunate enough to be sitting in the Press Box for the show which meant that instead of being down in the swirling masses, that I was high above like the sportscasters usually are when there are baseball games. It was a different head for sure, but still I would be able to enjoy the event and bring you the scoop. Here is how it went down for those who for whatever reason on Earth would miss it.

The answer to the question about whether the PiercingMetal.com Editor leans to either the Yankees or the Mets might be solved by the very existence of this article as it finds me being on point for an affair at the brand new Yankee Stadium as the new Hard Rock Café opened its doors with the help of Ace Frehley, Scott Ian, Frank Bello, Anton Fig and Darryl “DMC” McDaniels today. That’s not a bad show of New York musical support and when you add former Yankee Bernie Williams to the mix you have a really rousing opening. I’ve been to the Hard Rock Café a number of times at its other locations and even reviewed a couple of shows that had gone on there, so when the chance arose to see Ace and the Anthrax guys open up the new one I could hardly resist.
