Withered Announce North American Tour

Though I received this one earlier today, I decided to wait until the deep dark cold of the winters night to share it with you. It seemed appropriate and well, truth be told there have been a lot of tour announcements to serve up so check out the latest low down with the crushing Metal might of Withered who will be hitting the road very soon.

The Press Release:
WITHERED have announced a new leg of North American tour dates. The Cvlt Nation-sponsored tour kicks off on March 24 and sees support come from WAKE. A full list of confirmed tour dates can be found below.

Regarding the tour, WITHERED guitarist Mike Thompson comments, “After 6 months of one-off shows, a little writing, and regrouping, we can’t handle not being on the road any longer. So, we invited Canadian grinders, WAKE to join us late this winter for an eastern North America run. We plan to bring a new show with some songs we haven’t played in over a decade and can’t wait to reintroduce some of Withered’s back catalogue to new and old fans. It’s going to be one for the books.”

WITHERED are touring in support of their new album, ‘Grief Relic’. The album, hailed as “a smarter and more sophisticated version of Withered, staking out territory in a more expansive landscape.” (Stereogum) is streaming now at the official WITHERED bandcamp page. The highly anticipated full-length is available across multiple CD and LP formats here.

Marduk @ Blender Theater at Gramercy (8/15/2009)

It was about three months ago for the Blackendedfest that found Metal fans on a 24/7 watch based on the absence of Black Metal legends Marduk. International snafus were to blame but now the time had come for the bands return and arrive they would. Three shows delivered justly with no mercy given. The triumphant appearance found Marduk appearing in NYC with Withered, Black Anvil and Tombs. We were on point for the full show and present images of all the performers along with commentary for the curious eye.

Back in May the Blackenedfest was unleashed upon the world’s Metal loyalists and this crushing bill was to feature the co-headlining menace of Mayhem and Marduk but international traveling snafus got in the way and Mayhem would make the trek on their own while Marduk remained in their own country. Fast forward a few months after the recovery had begun from the Blackenedfest as a seething Marduk planned a quick visit to our region. The quick tour was exactly that and no more than three dates on the East Coast with tonight’s event being the closer of them all. The band arrived in NYC a day earlier and would do a meet and greet with their fans at the popular Duff’s Bar in Brooklyn and this event was very well received according to reports. I’m not sure if their upcoming album “Wormwood” was spun at the bar, but I would be part of a select lucky media group who were offered the chance to hear the new music on the bands tour bus prior to this evenings show. I had to say that this was some seriously impressive Black Metal and will really keep their listeners on the edge of their seats when it arrives in the stores in the next couple of months. To my knowledge this evening’s show was sold out and that made sense given the fact that it had been a number of years since the band last invaded this territory. The shows would feature Withered and Black Anvil as supporting acts, and tonight’s NYC show found Brooklyn’s own Tombs kicking the whole night off. Here is how the evening went for those who were unable to attend.

Mayhem @ Fillmore at Irving Plaza (5/21/2009)

The True Mayhem was set to appear as headliner for the aptly named “Blackenedfest” with direct support from Sweden’s Black Metal elite Marduk, Cephalic Carnage, Cattle Decapitation and Withered.  As it would come to pass there was some snafu that kept Marduk from being a part of the show so instead we found the expected Cephalic Carnage and Withered along with the surprise addition of Lair Of The Minotaur opening up the tour at NY’s own Fillmore NY.  We shot photos of all bands performing and offered up commentary about the whole evening.

While a holy day of obligation for those that choose to follow the Christian faith, the Metal acolytes that convened inside The Fillmore NY would be celebrating “Descension Thursday” for it was on this particular day that the Blackenedfest would kick off its tour and deliver its insidious assault on any who braved enter the venue. Readers will need to stick with me for a moment and pay attention because while this sinister bill was set to bring together the one and only Mayhem, perhaps the truest of the True Norwegian Black Metal bands in existence along with Marduk, equal demons in the Black Arts from Sweden along with Cephalic Carnage, Cattle Decapitation and Withered – the final product would be far from correct as those who arrived early to see the whole show would learn. Knowing that four solid bands were going to play made me want to arrive early and when I got in I found an unexpected surprise already in play. It seemed as though Lair Of The Minotaur was set up for this show and already delivering a crushing Doomish Black Metal set for the very minimal audience who had also arrived early. My guess was that the true crowd would get there for Marduk and Mayhem and that the larger Metal populace who had tickets had wanted to keep their energies for those two killer bands.

Watain @ The Knitting Factory (10/8/2008)

Artist: Watain
Venue: Knitting Factory (New York, NY)
Opener: Withered, Book Of Black Earth, Krallice
Date: 10/8/2008
Label: Candlelight Records

Even though we had just made our way past the first week of October, I had to admit that the night air was not as cool as it could have been for this time of the year but when I walked into the Knitting Factory venue, the cold grasp of the abyss could be felt based on the incredibly dark power of the touring package that was being hosted tonight. Tonight was the night that the Black Metal band Watain was returning to the states and joining them on this tour was Book Of Black Earth, Withered and Krallice. The band had performed at B.B. King Blues Club the last time around but a prior commitment kept me from attending and in one sense I was thankful about that because the band went on at something like 2am based on some scheduling issue between the band and the folks who had set the gig up. While I am clearly someone who enjoys a fair amount of what is considered the “popular” Black Metal, I had only heard stories about what I would find happening on the stage tonight and part of those tales had me really walking into the place on edge. I knew more about openers Withered and Book Of Black Earth as I had lightly touched upon their most recent CD releases and since Krallice was also going to be a surprise for me I was ready for tonight to be a show unlike many of the others I had seen before.
