Doc Coyle Leaves God Forbid & Then God Forbid Also Ends :(

Logo - God Forbid
I must admit that this surprised me but yes, Doc Coyle posted it on his Facebook late on Friday afternoon informing his friends and followers that he was leaving God Forbid after thirteen years at the guitar. That was that we felt, and the plan was to put up a posting to wish Doc the best of luck going forward because I’ve often had the pleasure of meeting him at shows and he was a really nice guy.

Win Tix To See Otep In NYC On 3/31/2013

Poster - Otep at Studio - 2013

The Scoop: Singer Otep Shamaya and her Art-House Metal meets Nu-Metal band that goes under her name have been releasing albums since 2000 to the delight of her most ardent fans. The group has been signed to Victory Records for the last few years and most recently released their first ever live album “Sounds Like Armageddon” and “Hydra” the latter of which Shamaya has been quoted citing as being the bands final recording. Only time will tell if this will actually be the case. That being said, it’s awesome to be able to offer this contest to the PiercingMetal readers in conjunction with the folks at Excess DB Entertainment. This Easter Sunday Slaughter will also feature One Eyed Doll, The Things They Carried and more. Read on how to participate.

“The Best Of” by Between The Buried and Me

Artist: Between The Buried and Me
Title: “The Best Of”
Label: Victory Records
Release Date: 3/29/2011
Genre: Progressive Metalcore
Rating: 3/5

It’s no secret that Between The Buried And Me have moved on from the Victory Records roster of artists and are now settled comfortably over at Metal Blade Records. Usually when dramatic changes like this happen for a band, the previous label dishes out one last release for the fans to get their hands on and we often find them being either a live concert recording or a comprehensive collection of the bands work that was done under their brand. With Between The Buried and Me we would find the latter being the case and while many “reviewers” are shitting on Victory Records with outcries of this being a “cash grab”, I maintain that such a release is entirely within their rights to give us as fans. In terms of its content the album touches upon the bands amazing “Colors” release and its subsequent live album from the tour along with “The Silent Circus” and “The Great Misdirect” but nothing seems to come from “The Anatomy Of” which was their album of covers and that is a shame since what I have heard sure sounded interesting. These selections are delivered across two CD’s while an accompanying DVD gives you some of the bands videos. The main and most glaring problem with the release is that Between The Buried and Me are not a band that one can sit and listen to one song of and get a general perspective about their capabilities. Yes the band manages to shine on their tracks but given their Progressive Metal nature and how their music adventures seamlessly from one tune to the next in almost a sequential pattern, it is really tricky to think that this can make anyone a new fan. Of course I could be wrong about this, and perhaps those who end up listening to the album will be inspired to purchase the full releases. I’d like to think that this is the case scenario. If it’s not, I suggest fans first look into the album “Colors” which was my own introduction to the group and an experience that found me becoming a supporter of their musical adventures going forward. I left my rating of the release in the middle ground of not great but also not terrible. Let’s discuss the DVD inclusion for a moment.

Destrophy is a relatively new and exciting Alt-Metal band that is currently signed to Victory Records. This evening they were direct support for Type O Negative and that show was discussed in full on THIS LINK. Now please enjoy the photographs that were taken during the permitted time that the media professionals have.

Otep @ Blender Theater at Gramercy (8/18/2009)

Otep was back in New York City, and celebrating the release of a brand new album on their new label. The band’s gig coincided with the Victory Records debut of their music on “Smash The Control Machine” and they would deliver a rousing set for their regional fans. The show also featured local Prog-Death artisans Hung, along with Seven Year Existence and Destrophy and we made sure to cover every single moment of the show.

Artist: Otep
Venue: Blender Theater at Gramercy (New York, NY)
Opener: Destrophy, Seven Year Existence, Hung
Date: 8/18/2009
Label: Victory Records

It’s been awhile since I have caught Otep in concert, and I think that the last time that I did was when she and her band mates did a gig down at the now closed NYC Knitting Factory. I should actually correct myself and inform the readers about how the club now resides in Brooklyn as opposed to Manhattan for those who might have been alarmed by the statement. As a group I’ve generally found Otep to be intriguing based on the way that she delivers her Metal. She blends the absolute heaviest shit on earth with poetic verse and a strong social conscience and she takes a defiant stand on domestic abuse. Clearly there is a lot to absorb when it comes to this Metal lady and tonight she would be bringing all of this out in force to the Blender Theater with special guest openers Hung from NYC, Seven Year Existence from Champaign, IL and Destrophy. Having never seen any of these openers before I made sure to get inside the venue early enough to enjoy them all. Here is how the night transpired for those who might be curious. Hung would come up first and according to reports were a last minute, albeit pleasant addition to the proceedings.
