This Just In: Saint Vitus Bar Has Permanently Closed Its Doors

After spending a majority of my day at one of the Pop Culture conventions, I arrived home to the Media Command HQ to a flurry of messages and notices that mentioned that the famed Greenpoint, Brooklyn Metal Club, Saint Vitus Bar had officially closed its doors. At the time this was all social media engagement and nothing was on their official channels. Our readers might recall that the bar has had its doors closed for several months after a late night raid that was documented on the website in a post found HERE. However, while the news was buzzing, I held back on posting it until seeing something from the owners and that brief comment about it all is below.

The Owners Brief:
1120 Manhattan Ave. 2011-2024 – Saint Vitus Bar to be continued…
Thank you to everyone who was a part of it. Love and Hails,
Arty, George, David

PiercingMetal Thoughts: Since the time of its hoped for only temporary closure, Vitus had launched into a “Vitus Presents” model and used other venues around the city. It is a damned shame to learn that a re-opening shall not happen and that there isn’t even the chance to have one final Heavy Metal Hoopla as a farewell to the place. I cannot think straight right now and will be compiling some additional thoughts on this soon. Were you a regular at Saint Vitus Bar? Chime in down below in the comments and let me know some of your favorite memories from the place.

Brooklyn’s Own Saint Vitus Bar Shuttered by NYC Department Of Buildings

This past Saturday, the news began circulating about the Saint Vitus Bar receiving a visit by the New York Police Department while a show was in progress and subsequently being closed on the spot for an indeterminable length of time. Details were spotty but other media sources were citing a complaint from the NYC Department of Buildings which I searched and have embedded as a graphic down below. As this resized for the web you might have to make it a little larger on your device to see it more clearly. While I’m by no means an expert on NYC laws, I will admit that some of this makes no sense to me.

Today the venue took to their Official Instagram and posted some updates and also answered some of the inquiries that they have been receiving.

“On Friday February 16th in the middle of a scheduled show, the DOB shut down all operations at Saint Vitus,”

The Press Release:
When Knitting Factory Brooklyn closed in August with a performance by Hannibal Buress, they promised to return to their roots in Manhattan for the first time since the original venue closed in 2009, but remained coy about the details. Now it can be told: Hospitality entrepreneur Nick Bodor and Knitting Factory Entertainment (KFE) are excited to announce their first collaboration to bring a new neighborhood café, bar and performance space to the East Village, New York City and to the world: Baker Falls (pop.298) at the legendary 101 Avenue A, on the site of the former Pyramid Club. Baker Falls’ performance space will house Knitting Factory Manhattan. The entertainment complex is scheduled to open in February 2023.

Nick Bodor has a proven track record creating and operating beloved, long-running spots in New York’s East Village, including Cake Shop, The Library bar and alt.coffee, as well as Bruar Falls in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Bodor will serve as the managing partner and creative director of the enterprise. Combining all his previous projects’ respective ethos into one gathering place that will cultivate its identity based on the long, illustrious history of 101 Avenue A, and Nick’s love for the neighborhood he has called home since 1992 (and he has been loving the East Village since 1985!).

While I really don’t enjoy having to facilitate the bad news as much as I like doing the positive stuff, it comes with the territory. As someone who lives and breathes the live music scene of my Metal and Rock Metropolis, I am sad to help share the broadcast that the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn will be closing its doors this coming August. Their Facebook announcement is embedded for you down below.

It was a couple of months ago when we helped broadcast the news about the soon to come reopening of Irving Plaza (seen HERE) which was great to see because live music is something that I have missed very much. Now its time for the folks over at LPR or Le Poisson Rouge to announce their grand reopening and the first slate of gigs that are lined up. Take a look.

The Press Release:
480 days. That’s how long it’s been since our stage has been dark and our doors have been closed. Thankfully, with the incredible generosity & support from music lovers like yourself, LPR is turning the corner stronger than ever before. Independent venues aren’t going away and we’re staking that claim with a stellar comeback lineup!
