A Spirited Surprise As Peter Dolving Quits The Haunted!!!

This was one of those events that I didn’t really anticipate taking place but then again I never fully followed their happenings and inner circle gossip but despite this being the case, Peter Dolving has indeed quit The Haunted. He was a founding member back in 1996 with the Bjorler Brothers (formerly of the legendary At The Gates) so this kind of news came as a bit of a shock to me. As a journalist I have seen the band maybe four or five times and was touch and go with what they delivered to the audience. Technically I preferred At The Gates more but a lot of my friends and fellow media peeps were hardcore about their presentation so you checked them out to help support the larger Metal community.

According to some reports, the singer announced his departure on Facebook of all things. I guess this is the quickest way to get the word around these days. From what I read he sounded kind of pissed and amounted to someone who was standing by his statement. He lines out how he’s not answering any questions about it and that he has had it. Oh well. He will certainly be a difficult singer to replace because his stage persona was so intense and serious.

The band counter responded on their Facebook and stated how they will continue on despite the news. We wish all parties the very best in their future music endeavors and wonder just how stable The Haunted shall remain without their oft-imposing and unpredictable front man. Of course this stuff sometimes eventually works itself out and everyone shakes hands and works together again for the benefit of their worldwide fans.

PiercingMetal Musings: The Top 20 Blogs Read In 2011

A few weeks ago I posted a narrative that discussed the 2011 year in my blogging adventures and how we had used the various criteria that get written about in this particular part of PiercingMetal.com – After this went online I got to thinking. What were the most popular posts for the year in peoples minds and what were they reading more than some of the other stuff that we had offered them? With that in mind I checked the statistics for the blog and listed the Top 20 Posts that were accessed in 2011. You will notice that some of them are from previous years in addition to what was written in 2011 and I felt that it would be interesting to see the whole list as opposed to just focusing on items that were written in 2011. Clicking on the title will launch the post so please do give them a visit. Perhaps you missed it when it was first written yourself, or meant to leave a comment and didn’t. There is truly no time like the present.

The Haunted @ B.B. King Blues Club (4/19/2009)

Artist: The Haunted
Venue: B.B. King Blues Club (New York, NY)
Opener: The Agonist & Merauder
Date: 4/19/2009
Label: Century Media Records

While a large number of the Metal Community had headed out of town for the New England Metal and Hardcore Festival, I had chosen to remain in the Big Apple so I could be a part of the weekend’s fun which included a Friday appearance by Y&T, a Saturday set from The Sleepytime Gorilla Museum and tonight’s adventures with The Haunted. The show this evening was at B.B. King Blues Club, where the guys in Y&T dropped in to deliver some powerful Hard Rock just the other day and now it was time for something quite heavier. The Haunted would bring their brand of Death Metal to the stage with NYCHC legends Merauder and rising stars The Agonist. Here is how the show went down for those who missed out.

The Agonist by Ken Pierce (2009)

The Agonist: I was pretty sure that the folks in The Agonist were doing as many gigs as we once found happening with Into Eternity and finding themselves on a number of interesting and powerful tour packages. Tonight marks about the fourth or fifth time that I have caught them in concert and considering I had only heard about them in the final months of 2007 when they opened up for Epica that’s rather much. I enjoy what they do and was happy to hear what had been accomplished with their newest release “Lullabies For The Dormant Mind” which marks the bands sophomore album on Century Media Records. Fronted by Alissa White-Gluz, who is a pint sized demon of Metal intensity, the band delivered a very solid set that hit you as soon as they began the first note and for those fans of the band that have been following then would be surprised to see the addition of someone new on guitar. Joining the touring group would be Chris Adolph who was put into place to add just a little bit of extra “oomph” to the punch that they deliver and this allows Danny Marino to focus his time on more of the lead guitar flair. I was digging into what the band was serving tonight and have been a fan of Alissa’s since I first got to see how diverse she is with her vocals, I felt that she was on point this evening and that the band comes across better and better in concert every time. With the new CD under their belts the set would focus on these new tunes and deliver about five of them while the remaining two came from “Only Once Imagined”. The full set ran like this “The Tempest (The Siren’s Song; the Banshee’s Cry)”, “…and Their Eulogies Sang Me to Sleep”, “Rise and Fall”, “Martyr Art”, “Thank You, Pain”, “Birds Elope With the Sun” & “Business Suits and Combat Boots”. I felt that the group went over well tonight which was nice to see as there have been times where the NYC is not always so receptive of their sound. I cannot understand why since they are heavy as hell during a live set and are in no way run of the mill or contrived. Let’s face it Metal heads, if you paid for a ticket you might as well enjoy the whole show and if you don’t have anything nice to say please don’t ruin it for your friends and the others around you. The Agonist is set to return on a number of other shows that will run the course of the summer and if we attend those we shall be sure to continue reporting on Alissa and Company’s adventures. Now it was time for Merauder.

Dark Tranquillity @ Blender Theater at Gramercy (3/26/2007)

Tonight was a co-headlining tour that was being done by The Haunted and Dark Tranquillity and depending on what night you went you would have one or the other switching off the main band spot. In NYC the show would find Dark Tranquillity being the main attraction and the killer show also featured Scar Symmetry who were making their first appearance in the states along with popular opening mainstays Into Eternity who were welcoming new members to their ranks. We made sure to be in the new Blender Theater early enough to be able to document all of the bands in words and images. Should you want to see more just click the logo below to be taken to our article on the main PiercingMetal.com site.

I guess I should say right off the bat that there were a few reasons that I wanted to check out this show and the first of these would be my chance to do a little exploration into a newly opened venue. Conveniently located on E23rd Street off Lexington Avenue, The Gramercy Theatre is a former movie house that has been modified to handle music performances. The venue is served up like a miniature version of the Nokia Theatre and has both a general admission standing area and seating. Whether the seating will be assigned for some shows is not clear to me but it could very well be the case depending on who is performing. I wasn’t sure of the capacity of the place, but guessed around 800 which make it smaller than both Irving Plaza and B.B. Kings at full attendance. This allows the fan to get up close to their favorite players should they pay a visit. Tonight’s show would also be exciting because it was the first appearance on US Shores for Scar Symmetry and I have been loving their latest Nuclear Blast Records release “Pitch Black Progress”. Into Eternity would perform and it’s always nice to see these guys. Tonight they would have two new members with Justin Bender of guitar and find name on drums. Labeled “The Metal For The Masses” Tour the event would be headlined by The Haunted with the co-headliner being Dark Tranquillity. On my arrival to the venue I was pleased to find that tonight’s show would be one of the Dark Tranquilllity headlining spots as the two groups had been switching it up as they rolled through America. Here is how it went down for me so pay attention.

“Revolver” by The Haunted

Artist: Haunted
Title: “Revolver”
Label: Century Media Records
Release Date: 10/19/2004
Genre: Death Metal
Rating: 4/5

Sweden’s The Haunted find their Century Media debut as a total mix of Metal genres with an excellent result. There is a little bit of your classic Thrash mixing with some Speed and traces of Gothenburg thrown in for good measure. The musicianship is tight and delivers on the record very well with heavy tunes and a driving power that not all bands can keep by their fourth album. The main reason for the Haunted being so accustomed to this level of perfection is due to the fact that the group features the talents of the Bjorler Brothers who come from a little band known as At The Gates. Their involvement gives them a better insight to the Metal scene than a lot of bands could ever hope for and with rEvolver the push the bar up another notch. The vocals of Dolving are fantastic across the whole piece since not only does he scream like a man with his last breath, but he also has a melodic side that you see mixed in for “Burnt To A Shell”. However, if you simply prefer a total full force throttling then you might better enjoy songs like “No Compromise” and “Who Will Decide”. Much of the journey that The Haunted will take you on will make you find the need to stomp and form a pit in support of their music. Joining the Bjorler Brothers and Mr. Dolving is Per Jensen (drums), and Patrik Jensen (guitars).
