“Motor City Mayhem” [Blu-ray] by Ted Nugent

Artist: Ted Nugent
Title: “Motor City Mayhem” [Blu-ray]
Label: Eagle Vision
Release Date: 6/30/2009
Genre: Hard Rock
Rating: 4/5

Having reviewed this DVD when it originally was released on standard edition DVD and finding no real difference other than the presentation on the Blu-ray medium I am re-presenting my words about this issue for those fans who might not own it yet. Please continue.

While it’s probably safe to say that if you have seen one Ted Nugent live video concert then you have seen them all since many follow a particular standard when it comes to the set list and one can always count on Uncle Ted being at his audience appeasing best with the guitar and his electric dialogue. That being said this particular DVD is yards ahead of the many that have preceded it and that’s because this is one of total celebration of a life lived and breathed in the fires of Hard Rock & Roll. Presenting “Motor City Mayhem”, the 6000th official show ever done by the musician, filmed in front of a hometown audience on July 4th 2008. It doesn’t get any more American if you ask me and the show starts off with a bang as members of the US Armed Forces greet the musician and as he enters and performs “The Star Spangled Banner”, an absolutely stunning young bikini clad model pops out of a giant cake. Talk about getting a party started right, and through it all Ted is his humble self telling the audience to wish him a happy anniversary before he kicks the show into gear. Of course no one seemed to be complaining by the looks of the crowd in the video. The live performance comes released to the masses a few short months after the CD that bore the same name and presented the full set on two discs for his fans to enjoy. Now the Nugent completist can properly see just what the audio teased them about by showcasing it on a nice big TV with the speakers pumping at full volume.

“Setlist: The Very Best Of Ted Nugent – Live” by Ted Nugent

Artist: Ted Nugent
Title: “Setlist: The Very Best Of Ted Nugent – Live”
Label: Sony Legacy
Release Date: 7/13/2010
Genre: Hard Rock
Rating: 3.5/5

If you are a Hard Rock fan that knows their stuff then you clearly already have a love for the musical output of our own “Uncle” Ted Nugent. For decades the outspoken guitarist has entertained us in a manner that few others would ever brave and many of his songs are the ones that burgeoning guitarists learned as they hoped for their own greatness. This edition of the “Setlist Live” best-of series presents ten of the Motor City Madman’s crème de la crème tunes and covers the span of three of his classic live albums. The releases we see presented in brief come via “Double Live Gonzo”, “Intensities in 10 Cities” and “Live at Hammersmith ’79”. There are also a couple of songs that hail from remasters of his studio output but there does not seem to be anything unreleased on this one. Depending on when you got into Ted’s music, this could be a real treat for you as a fan. I liked the stuff that hailed from the “Double Live Gonzo” the most as that is required listening for any fan of the genre. Since that album has a re-issue out, it bears looking into as well. Most of Ted’s standards are here to enjoy such as “Cat Scratch Fever” and “Free For All” but missing is the always fun “Wango Tango” and “White Buffalo”. We do get “Wang, Dang, Sweet Poon Tang” which is seminal Ted but I would have avoided the lengthy “Hibernation” in order to deliver more tunes in its fifteen minutes. I also think that the blues based offering was a misfire since “Lip Lock” takes away from the blazing drive of the other Nugent offerings. They did leave this with older material or at least older era Ted so it was cool to find him going back into his own history and closing up the CD with the Amboy Dukes “Baby Please Don’t Go”.

“Happy Defiance Day Everyday” by Ted Nugent

Artist: Ted Nugent
Title: “Happy Defiance Day Everyday”
Label: Eagle Records
Release Date: 7/4/2010
Genre: Hard Rock
Rating: 3.75/5

If there was ever an outspoken personality for the Hard Rock and Metal scene, and a true guitar hero to boot, it is our own “Uncle” Ted Nugent. For over four decades The Nuge has been entertaining fans with killer music and an acerbic wit that makes you scratch your head and think about the state of world affairs. That being said, there is an MP3 collection of the man’s work being made available for the Fourth Of July holiday and its title “Happy Defiance Day Everyday”. It’s a title that makes sense since Nugent was never one to neither stand on ceremony nor sit idly by while injustice and political vice put a stranglehold on society. If Nugent thinks you suck, he will tell you to your face and not via his management or press team. If Nugent thinks that you are doing wrongs to the environment or the world, he will call you out publicly and very likely turn more people against you than you might have been prepared for. This is the kind of champion one needs in their Rock and Roll and while he occasionally tests the limits, I have long enjoyed the majority of his musical output. This MP3 only downloadable album covers some of the very classic years and reaches all the way up to the most recent albums such as “Spirit Of The Wild”, “Craveman” and “Love Grenade”. For me personally, I lean to the older, older stuff but that is just me. We get some representation in this regard by finding “Cat Scratch Fever” and “Free For All” here but noticeably absent is the classic “Wango Tango”. Perhaps Ted felt this song has been on too many compilations already, and who are we to argue with a musician that is as good with a rifle and a bow and arrow as he is with a guitar. In the end these thirty tracks are a good place to start if you are coming in late to the movie and need a guide on the journey. As a solo performer, Uncle Ted has delivered more than a dozen studio albums and at least a half dozen live recordings and some videos. Add to that his work with the Amboy Dukes and Damn Yankees and you have quite the list to peruse but it is surely one that will make you a fan of the man.
