New Year’s Music Resolutions for 2014: Chapter 2

new year's music resolutions

Welcome back to our annual series of “New Year’s Music Resolutions”; it’s our third year doing this and still a blast to get a glimpse inside these talented artists plans for the year. That said, let’s get down to business with the second chapter.

1. Mike LePond (Symphony X): My New Year’s Music Resolution is to release a new Symphony X and a new Solo album all in the same year.

2. JUNGLE ROT: To keep positive about our Industry when things go wrong or bad, I will make the best of it. Mostly while on the road, like when touring and having to make sure that we are getting paid out for the night, dealing with getting taxed on merch, even making sure to get our buy-out to eat for that day. Trying to stay positive after doing an 8hrs drive from the night before and pulling up to the venue and there is nowhere to park, even after you confirmed with the club that there would be, and to keep positive when we have to drive around for another hour trying to land a spot. (This is a sign of a bad night.) After 20 yrs. of touring and dealing with the business side of the band, it has taken a toll on me. I am starting to enjoy myself again over the last two years or so, and staying positive as much as I can has a lot to do with it. It took me a while, but I found out in the end that my bandmates have my back and will always assure me that when things get tough, that things will be all-right and will get better.

PiercingMetal’s “Best Of” 2012: The Concerts

Looking back on 2012 as a concert going year I had to say that there were a lot of cool highlights for me. Sure I was compiling my “Year End Best Of” to cover all the different things that I’ve examined over the year but with the blog growing faster and faster and more contests happening on it for the crushing shows that hit our town, I decided to keep showcasing a number of the concerts that I saw during the course of the year. Bear in mind that these are my very favorite ones out of the whole bunch. I really had a great time seeing a number of shows but these stood out. Here we go.

1. KISS @ Live On Letterman: I don’t think that I need to go into how cool it is to see a band like KISS in the Ed Sullivan Theatre. The place holds 500 or so people and KISS sells out places that hold thousands more. See why I felt this was special. So yeah.

2. Nightwish and Kamelot @ Beacon Theatre: Nightwish and Kamelot both hold very special places to me as a music scribe and having them paired up for a tour was extraordinary.

3. Trans-Siberian Orchestra @ Prudential Center: This show was the debut of the new “Lost Christmas Eve” themed tour.

4. Roger Waters @ Yankee Stadium: My second time at Yankee Stadium for a massive concert and with Roger playing “The Wall” from front to back I stood awestruck.

5. KISS & Motley Crue @ PNC Bank Arts Center: This was a kickass pairing and the guys in The Treatment were pretty damned good as well.

6. Lamb Of God @ Roseland Ballroom: Metal laid waste to NYC this night.

7. Paganfest @ Gramercy Theatre: Turisas headlined this one and brought along Alestorm, Arkona and Huntress.

8. Sabaton @ Gramercy Theatre: This band is climbing the pole of popularity. Local support

9. Rhapsody Of Fire @ Gramercy Theatre: There was so much drama with the RoF division leading up to this show but you would never notice with the levels of kick ass Power Metal that was happening on the stage.

10. Marillion @ Irving Plaza: Leaders of the Neo-Progressive Rock movement. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen them and they even did “Kayleigh”.

“Music In Progress” Vol. 2 by Various Artists

Artist: Various Artists
Title: “Music In Progress” V2
Label: InsideOut Music
Release Date: 4/13/2010
Genre: Progressive Metal
Rating: 4/5

I once heard a saying that went “If It’s Free It’s For Me”, and I have to admit that this is totally my mindset these days based on the dismal economy that we are in. I’m not alone in this of course and it seems that at every turn the consumer is watching their spending habits a whole lot more than ever before and this makes preview releases such as this latest offering from InsideOut Music all the more appealing. Even though this is free you might be wondering what would lead you to set aside the time to download these particular tunes and this is especially going to be the case if you have no idea about anything that InsideOut Music has brought to the table over the past few years. That being said let me educate those who might be unaware and say that this label has long been a leading provider of quality Progressive Metal music. For years they gave us stuff like OSI, IQ, Symphony X and King’s X along with Spock’s Beard and Transatlantic to name a choice few and with that being said you can safely adventure forward with no level of fear. Even though I mentioned some of the bigger bands its safe to say that if you have enjoyed this genre in any fashion then you have likely been listening to a number of the other bands on their roster and can attest to the level of quality that they dish out on its behalf. This edition is listed as “Vol. 2” and it clocks in at twelve stunning tracks which will totally do the trick and find the downloader investigating the presented artists a little deeper at the end of the day. This alone is a good thing because if by giving us a healthy sample of their amazing talent, the listeners might very well go out and purchase a full album afterward and that makes it a win-win situation in a very trying time in the music industry.
