Metal Church @ Colos-Saal, Aschaffenburg, Germany (6/12/2017)

Artist: Metal Church in Germany
Venue: Colos-Saal, Aschaffenburg, Germany
Opener: n/a
Date: 6/12/2017
Label: Rat Pak Records

Three subways, a regional train from Hessen to Bavaria, one taxi, and ½ mile of walking, and I finally made it to Aschaffenburg, Bavaria. An intimidating trip to take alone as a stranger in a strange land, but well worth the trek.

Backwoods Germany is a strange place to see the very American Thrash legends Metal Church, but it was probably one of the most packed shows. Another group with the energy of fully functional teenagers. Mike Howe is back on lead vocals and has the same range that made his early albums with Metal Church classics. The other change in lineups since the last album/tour cycle didn’t slow the guys down as Stet Howland killed on drums and will, hopefully, be a permanent addition. Those only now following the bands activity should know that Howeland replaced Jeff Plate (Savatage, Trans-Siberian Orchestra) a few short months ago.

“Fake Healer” was an easy choice to get the crowd going and despite the remote location, this was a fair size audience for Church to hold Metal services. I was honestly shocked at how many enthusiastic fans came out to see them. At the end note of every song, the audience was screaming for “Metal Church” until the band relented and played their next hit. Seismic activity could probably be read as far away as London.

Lita Ford @ B.B. King Blues Club (7/7/2008)

Logo - Lita Ford

Artist: Lita Ford
Venue: B.B. King Blues (New York, NY)
Opener: Psychic Drive
Date: 7/7/2008
Label: Independant Artist

The original billing for this event was listed as “Kiss Me Deadly” a Tribute to Lita Ford, and while such a thing is not impossible in terms of existing, one definitely had to wonder how a tribute act to such an artist would be headlining the famous venue as opposed to a major label act. The listing also noted that the gig would feature a very special, but unnamed guest and while it didn’t take a rocket scientist to guess that it was going to be a Lita Ford gig, it remained a secret until several media outlets announced that it was actually her that would be performing. Apparently the 80’s Rock Goddess was set to perform at the 2008 Rocktober Festival and was listed there as her only scheduled North American appearance. Tonight’s show would essentially be one of those live practice gigs to warm Lita up for the festival appearance and to work out any kinks that might be present in the set list and it would be where most gigs of note seem to happen, Times Square’s own B.B. King Blues Club. Opening up the gig would be a band called Psychic Drive.

W.A.S.P. @ Starland Ballroom (7/15/2005)

Artist: W.A.S.P.
Venue: Starland Ballroom (Sayreville, NJ)
Opener: L.A. Guns, Stephen Pearcy, Metal Church
Label: Sanctuary Records
Date: 7/15/2005
Genre: Heavy Metal

The event was called “The American Metal Blast” tour and this pretty much on target for it was that and so much more. I was fortunate to be able to review this show not only as a Metal Journalist but also as a fan of all of these bands. W.A.S.P. in particular has held a high ranking in my list of favorite bands to see live and when you add three other quality groups to the bill – you know the show was going to be great all around. The setting would be The Starland Ballroom, where most recently I attended the Sounds Of The Underground show and the Anthrax reunion. While I am already a fan of this place I have to say that this is a great venue to see a group like W.A.S.P. It is roomy enough to cater to their visual nature and you are able to follow the action from any vantage point in the club. For me that is an incredible plus.

W.A.S.P.!!!! Quite possibly one of the greatest of the L.A. Bands of the Eighties has returned to support their newest album “The Neon God Pt.1 – The Rise”. Yes, Blackie Lawless and his team of maniacs were finally playing after almost a 3 and a half year absence from the touring circuit. It would be an evening to remember I was certain. Blackie always had been one of the premiere frontmen and his song-writing skills and musical delivery of them had seldom changed over the years.
