Ozzfest 2004 @ Jones Beach, NY: 7-14-2004

As far as concerts go, it would seem that if you were a heavy metal music fan and chose to miss these years Ozzfest for any reason that you were doing yourself a great injustice. This years Ozzfest would prove to be the one with perhaps the best lineup of all time for when it was at the planning stages it seemed as though each act was getting better and better upon the announcement. The Main Stage bands listed were Black Label Society, Superjoint Ritual, Dimmu Borgir, Slayer, Judas Priest and Black Sabbath. The second stage bands were also very good this time around, mixing some new and some staple acts. Among this list were Slipknot, Hatebreed, Lamb of God and Lacuna Coil and Otep.

An Evening In Hell: The Jagermeister Music Tour

This by far was the earliest show I have ever attended. A quick call to the club made me find out that it was going to be “doors open” at 6:45pm, and first band on at 6:55pm. I’ve got to admit that this factor made it really difficult to enjoy the pre-show beer or three. I was still waiting on the entrance line when 6:55 hit and I heard the rumbling sound of what I thought was the Arch Enemy set. I got pissed since I had wanted to see them as much as seeing Slayer once again.

Slayer @ Roseland Ballroom (11/11/2004)

Logo - Slayer

Artist: Slayer
Venue: Roseland Ballroom NYC
Opener: Killswitch Engage & Mastodon
Date: 11/11/04
Label: American Recordings
Genre: Thrash Metal

The Jaegermeister Music Tour has definitely become one of the most anticipated events in Heavy Metal music these days and primarily because it features the mighty Slayer as the headlining band (or at least it has for a couple of years now). It is an example of metal at its most primal intensity and can become brutal beyond description. This year it would be no different for Slayer would return as the Headliner with Killswitch Engage and Mastodon would kick of the mayhem for the evening. I cannot think of a better venue for this sort of concert than Roseland Ballroom. The entire front stage area becomes a pit when Slayer comes on and if you are not into that sort of thing you really need to run for the hills as it can get crazy.

“Still Reigning” [DVD] by Slayer

Artist: Slayer
Title: “Still Reigning”
Label: American Recordings
Release Date: 10/2004
Genre: Heavy Metal
Rating: 8/10

Slayer has released a great new DVD entitled “Still Reigning”. There are a couple of stand out points to this release which follows the recent “War At The Warfield” of last year. For starters this is the first official release that will feature original drummer Dave Lombardo who has rejoined the band as a permanent member since 2003. With no offense to Paul Bostaph, Slayer is at is metal best with Dave on the skins. There is a DVD included in the career expansive boxed-set “Soundtrack To The Apocalypse” but not everyone is going to spend $100 in order to get it (I recommend they do however). The second stand out piece is the fact that the album “Reign In Blood” is performed from start to finish. Many people regard this as a seminal piece in the Slayer catalog. They are not wrong in that for this is the home of not only the title track, but also “Piece By Piece” as well as “Angel Of Death” and many more.
