New Year’s Music Resolutions For 2013: Part 3

Good morning to you dear readers of the PiercingMetal Blog, and welcome to our titanic third chapter in the “New Year’s Music Resolutions for 2013”. They say that the third time is the charm and I am good with that so let’s get right on down to business shall we. Proceed with interest more than any level of caution.

1. Keith Williams (Schism): My New Year’s Metolution: Be kind, be supportive, be happy, thankful, gracious & grateful…see more shows, perform better quality shows at quality venues, try and get paid what we’re worth perhaps?

2. David Ellefson (Megadeth): Play harder, play better!

3. Sam Roon (Hung): Thanks for including HUNG in this year’s festivities on Piercing Metal!!! I think for 2013 the entire Metal scene has a lot of work to do. The music industry has recognized the lack of support from the fans, and Ken, as someone who goes to every show in New York City, I’m sure you know all about the dwindling headcount. For 2013 my music resolution… or moreover, my musical mission, is to devote as much time as I possibly can to getting Metal in New York City back to the support strength that people from outside the area perceive us to have. It’s our responsibility to keep our scene alive, support the local bands around us, and to keep going to shows. Be a part of what’s happening. Twenty years from now when you look back at New York City at the time where you were a part of what was going on, you know you’ll want to be proud to have been a part of something. You were a part of a movement… a unique moment in time. The only way to achieve that feeling is to invest a little effort now, and THAT my friend, is my musical resolution for 2013. Thanks again for including HUNG and supporting the area Metal scene Ken. PiercingMetal has always been kind to the locals, and we respect you for it! For the readers, keep supporting this site and going to the shows in the calendar! Look for a new HUNG record early next year and SUPPORT LOCAL METAL!!! Happy fucking new year.

PiercingMetal & Social Networking: Skulls ‘N Bones

“Skulls ‘N Bones” is a Metal Social Networking Site and Community. It’s been around longer than most of the Facebook Fan Pages and even many Blogs that focus on the Heavy Metal music scene and its bands. I first heard of SnB when it was an offshoot of a Ning.com page called “NYCMetal” and then had some ties to another site called “NoneLouder.com”. Eventually it morphed into its own presence and has done a great job of giving Metal fans a place to call their own. If you needed a quick idea of it, perhaps you can view it as a Facebook that is geared entirely towards the Metal demographic and that is a very cool thing.

When it all started out, PiercingMetal.com created an account profile on it so we could interact a little easier with the fans. I didn’t make a personal page, as I felt this was the best way to tie my own sites adventures into the lives and happenings over on Skulls ‘n Bones. The domain is under the command of Sam Roon and he puts his all into keeping the Metal Republic amused. While there is no Wikipedia entry for the domain at the time of this writing, any interested or curious fans can find my Profile by clicking the logo above. Feel free to add me as a friend if you like and then be sure to keep following what we are sharing with its members. There are a number of different sections to enjoy and sometimes some cool giveaways. Given its setup, you may comment on any amount of posted items. As I pressed “publish” for this blog narrative there were a few thousand members in the community so people are clearly enjoying it.

UPDATE: 12/31/2014 – Since this item was first penned, SnB has moved on from its Social Networking aspect as far as members go and continues to entertain Metal fans worldwide as we do with PiercingMetal.com

“Progeny” by Hung

Hung’s newest CD “Progeny” is one that immediately draws you into their musical web from the moment that the album begins to play. To me this was based on the overall depth of the dark melodies that start it off and their clear understanding about the progressive side of things as well. It opens with the title track which was a slower number and despite this it held an essence of sorrow thanks to Lyris Hung’s singing violin which manifests itself very tastefully all around. The vocals of Dmitry Kostitsyn are largely growling ones yet he manages to slide in some clean lines as well which add to the songs drama. There are a number of calm interludes that seemed to focus on the bass playing of Sam Roon and of course when placed all together I found it very satisfying and a band that was as intriguing as they were talented. The track ran for some ten minutes but it was not a boring span and instead one that found me eager to continue into the release. “Desert Of Sad” came up second and was what I considered the head banger of the album since it was a lot more driving than the opening track. This one has a couple of points where you feel the urge to get more into it. As an EP there are only five tracks delivered and while this was the case it seemed that after the opener that my favorite number fell to “Sediment Of War” and this was based on the really “live” sound it had to it.
