Last summer the Big Apple hosted the Summer Slaughter tour which found an incredible sampling of Heavy Metal’s finest delivering the goods for one long day of Metal. It was a show that presented relative newcomers to the public eye with bands like Psycroptic, Whitechapel and Born Of Osiris while also delivering the growing in popularity groups such as Despised Icon, The Faceless and The Aborted. The heavy hitter portion of the night came via Cryptopsy, Vader and Kataklysm with the whole shebang being headlined by the Black Dahlia Murder. “Whew” was all that many of the Metal faithful could muster after being a part of this almost eight hour event at the Fillmore NY. The show was great for the most part and we reported on it in full, but even that lineup found us realizing that there were several faults along the way. For starters it might have been smart to sacrifice at least one band to allow for an extra song from each of the groups as opposed to the uneven nature in set times that we got. The numerous bands found the first grouping playing for just about thirty minutes if not less. We also would have switched around the roster a little bit for while we love what The Black Dahlia Murder does, we did not feel that they should have been headlining over the might of bands like Vader and Kataklysm. Believe it or not, Vader actually only played about 20 minutes while we got over an hour of the BDM. Clearly something was wrong but that is a tale for another review. The 2009 edition of Summer Slaughter would present the might of a headlining Necrophagist with direct support from Suffocation. Also on the bill were Viking Metal titans Ensiferum, Darkest Hour, Winds Of Plague, Dying Fetus, Born Of Osiris, Origin, Beneath The Massacre, After The Burial, Decrepit Birth and Blackguard.

“Programmed To Consume” by Abysmal Dawn

Artist: Abysmal Dawn
Title: “Programmed To Consume”
Label: Relapse Records
Release Date: 5/13/2008
Genre: Technical Death Metal
Rating: 4/5

Abysmal Dawn is part of the next generation of Technical Death Metal and with their Relapse Records debut “Programmed To Consume” clearly demonstrates that they mean business. The album starts off the assault with the title track and from the very onset we find that the brutality and technical display is top notch. The band blisters through the riffs that are carefully layered over some inhuman blast beat drumming but it’s not just a Thrash Fest as we find on tracks like “Twilight’s Fallen” where they introduce a slowly trudging riff over the solid double kick. The band is led by Charles Elliot who handles the growling, guitar and even a little keyboard and he does well on all ends. Jamie Boulanger also plays guitar and given it is not specified if only one of the axe wielders does the leads I will just assume that he does as well. Terry Barajas is on the drums and probably one of the more proficient players I had heard in a few months given the amount of Metal I am absorbing. His level of play shows that he is a talented and creative technician on the kit for he not only has the ability to throttle the listener but to also impress those who are seeking deeper levels of percussion during the songs. At times I felt he was dueling with Elliott’s guitar riffing and that impression made the Abysmal Dawn material a little more profound.

“Open Fire” by Alabama Thunderpussy

Artist: Alabama Thunderpussy
Title: “Open Fire”
Label: Relapse Records
Release Date: 3/6/2007
Genre: Hard Rock
Rating: 3.5/5

I tend to like this kind of stuff from time to time as it’s pure and back to basics Hard Rock – and if you lean to that side yourself you will find it to be the top-shelf liquor of Hard Rock & Roll. “Open Fire” presents us with ATP’s return and also with a new singer in their roster. Vocalist Kyle Thomas has a swagger and growl that brings to mind more of the heavy Southern Rock bands of days past, and there are some moments on this recording that made me think of the mighty Molly Hatchet. When you start to play this CD and “The Cleansing” begins with its almost Motley Crue “Red Hot” drumming, I dare you to not kick one back with the stereo blasting while the band kicks into gear. It’s primarily a Metal album, but some of the tunes like “None Shall Return” and “Whisky War” have that rumbling groove that you often find in bands like Artimus Piledriver.

“Trample The Weak, Hurdle The Dead” by Skinless

Artist: Skinless
Title: “Trample The Weak, Hurdle The Dead”
Label: Relapse Records
Release Date: 6/13/2006
Genre: Grindcore
Rating: 5/5

To Trample The Weak, Hurdle The Dead should be the mantra of every technically inspired Grind outfit on the planet. The bombastic approach that defines the genre is as much about the imagery as it is of the end-result on the listener’s tympanic membrane. Leaving the ear-bled ruins of Death Metal’s underbelly gasping for their own survival, Skinless has returned with what might be a new benchmark for the genre.
