Pink Floyd To Deliver “The Endless River” In October 2014

Logo - Twitter

It seems that the world of music fans have the likes of Twitter to thank based on David Gilmour’s wife Polly Samson leaking the news about the bands newest album “The Endless River” being presented to the public in October 2014. This will be their first album in twenty years and I have to say that I am pretty excited to hear this news even if it came from a Twitter account as opposed to an official piece of press copy. You can check out the image of this particular tweet which as you can see was shared several thousand times since it was sent out yesterday. Roger Waters @ Yankee Stadium (7/6/2012)

Artist: Roger Waters
Venue: Yankee Stadium (The Bronx, NY)
Opener: n/a
Date: 7/6/2012
Label:

I’ve been listening to the music of Pink Floyd for as long as I can remember and as result of this, their epic concept album “The Wall” has remained one of my personal favorites for many, many years. Historically speaking when “The Wall” was first toured for by Floyd, there were not a lot of shows done based on the incredibly daunting production that it was. It was 1980 when it initially came to the United States and I remember that even my Mother wanted to check this one out and bring me along. At the time I was still relatively new to live concerts but sadly we never ended up getting tickets so the show would not be something I could reflect upon at this point in time. I’ve surely made up for lost time as a music scribe and that made being on point to see Waters deliver his magnum opus with his solo band at the no longer new Yankee Stadium something that I was very much looking forward to. The musician made sure to get two shows arranged for the region and that was a very good thing to find happening. I attended the Friday evening performance which went something like this.

The Wall was set up already of course and the arriving fans were treated to the enormous visual that spanned from one side of the stadiums back field to the other. Some of the bricks had even reached into the stands and that was just an amazing visual which really tended to lose a little something if you were standing too close. There were numerous platforms and once the house lights went out and the first chords of “In The Flesh” began it was not unlike a fast paced thrill ride for the senses. Two military personnel had first done some miming with a large puppet that I assume was “Pink” like in the concepts story and when his defiant fist found him crumpled on the ground near the attending media it was on. Roger appeared to thunderous applause and donned a uniform of his own as he took us through the introductory piece. Platforms elevated banner holding soldiers and The Wall transformed into a giant multi-media video screen at the same time. Unbelievable and a presentation that found my jaw dropped and heart beating faster than was healthy. It had begun.

“A Foot In The Door” by Pink Floyd

Artist: Pink Floyd
Title: “A Foot In The Door”
Label: Capitol Records
Release Date: 11/8/2011
Genre: Psychedelic Rock/Rock
Rating: 3.5/5

Before I begin let me explain how difficult it must be to compile a greatest “hits” release for the band Pink Floyd because if you were going to go by the traditional use of the term, the group really only had about a handful of radio hits. If you analyze those you will find that most of them came from the “Dark Side Of The Moon” and “The Wall” releases with only a couple of other examples. Despite this the band has remained one of the most influential of them all and any of the respect they get is rightly deserved. In thinking about my circle of musical friends, I cannot think of one of them who do not enjoy a little Pink Floyd every now and again. Their work is just that good. Earlier in November, the folks at Capitol Records offered the fans of the band a comprehensive collection of remasters in beautiful packaging with a detailed booklet but it would not end there. Depending on how interested in the band you have become over the years there are also two higher priced versions that give you a little more in terms of music and coolness. Here is what I know about them.

“Why Pink Floyd?” Because EMI Music Said So Is Why…….

Before you continue deeper into this posting let me ask you a question. How many Pink Floyd song’s can you name right now off the top of your head? Now my hope is that you just rattled off about five or six of the main tunes with an additional two rarities for good measure. If you didn’t then you are not really a worthy study of one of the true legends of Rock music and I feel just a little bit bad for you about it. Oh well, let’s continue along shall we.

Having grown up on Pink Floyd and remembering “Dark Side Of The Moon” as one of the earliest albums that I actually ever heard as a growing boy makes this a really exciting post for me to make on the Musings blog. I don’t know about the rest of you but to me this is some seriously cool news. Check it out…..It seems as though the legendary group is offering up remastered editions of their complete catalog (well, almost complete since it seems as though “Is There Anybody Out There”, “Pulse” and I think one other more recent live issue are not a part of the presentation) will be coming out. There are also a number of different configurations of them. I copied the press words right from the mailer that their representatives send to me so you can absorb it in full. Read on.

“Back Against The Wall” by Various Artists

Artist: Various Artists
Title: “Back Against The Wall”
Label: Purple Pyramid/Cleopatra
Release Date: 9/13/2005
Genre: Progressive Rock
Rating: 8/10

One of my all-time favorite albums in the music collection is most definitely Pink Floyd’s epic release “The Wall”. Twenty-five years after its initial release the music sounds as fresh and as innovative as ever. Roger Waters truly had created a masterpiece with his band mates David Gilmour, Richard Wright and Nick Mason. Musically and lyrically profound this albums impact still resonates today and is revered in the minds of many great musical artisans. To celebrate this impact some of these greats in Progressive and Hard Rock joined forces and performed a song for song representation that not only stays true to the original but also offers a glimpse into their own style as well. The result is extraordinary and very enjoyable. Similar to the great masterpiece itself the best way to listen to this CD is from beginning to end as one ends up doing when they try to merely sample “The Wall” release. You gain so much more from absorbing it in this manner than by simply playing the radio hits.
