The Japan Society Announces East Coast Premiere of “Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM”

Japan Society, a 116-year-old nonprofit organization with a goal of bringing the U.S. and Japan together, today announced it will host the East Coast Premiere of the record-breaking Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM. The Gundam saga, often called the “Star Wars of Japan”, is a beloved 40+ year franchise. Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM is its latest entry and a sequel to 2002’s Mobile Suit Gundam SEED, one of the most popular series in the Gundam multiverse. This special event is presented together with Bandai Namco Filmworks and Anime NYC, and it will take place simultaneously with a West Coast Premiere hosted by Bandai Namco Filmworks in LA.

The subtitled premiere of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM will take place on Sunday, March 31 at 4 PM and the English dubbed premiere will take place on Monday, April 1 at 7 PM. Both screenings will be held at Japan Society.

Japan Society is a storied institution that has presented Japanese art, culture, business and policy for over a century, including visits from U.S. Presidents, Japanese Prime Ministers, and Nobel Prize winners. It presents this new Gundam film in recognition of Gundam’s cultural significance in Japan and global place as a pillar in the U.S.-Japan relationship and our shared popular arts.

Anime NYC Honored by the Consulate General of Japan in New York

Anime NYC Powered By Crunchyroll, the second-largest Japanese popular culture festival in the United States, was proudly honored by the Consulate General of Japan in New York at a ceremony and reception at Ambassador Mikio Mori’s residence. Anime NYC Event Director MK Goodwin and Anime NYC Founder Peter Tatara received a special commendation from Ambassador Mori in recognition of Anime NYC’s work in bringing New York and Japan closer together by celebrating Japan’s popular arts. The special event was attended by anime industry professionals, partners, and press across New York City.

Anime NYC, last held November 17-19, 2023, attracted over 63,000 passionate attendees from across New York and all 50 states. The festival’s special guests included voice actors Kana Ichinose, Kengo Kawanishi, and Moe Kahara; manga creators Kore Yamazaki and Yoshifumi Tozuka; and musicians Hiroyuki Sawano, SennaRin, and i☆Ris. Anime NYC featured Japanese popular culture companies including Aniplex, Bandai Namco, Crunchyroll, GKIDS, HIDIVE, Hololive, Kinokuniya, Kodansha, VIZ Media, and Yen Press as well as arts, culture, and governmental organizations including the Japanese Consulate, Japan Society, Japan Foundation, and the Japan National Tourism Organization. Ambassador Mikio Mori spoke at Anime NYC about the power of popular culture and sports in linking the US and Japan prior to a screening of the anime BLUE LOCK with voice actor Kazuki Ura.

The Japan Society Announces Special Public Screening of “Godzilla Minus One”

Japan Society is honored to announce a special public preview screening of Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus One. Following its world premiere at the prestigious Tokyo International Film Festival, Japan Society will present the first Japanese Godzilla movie since 2016 to eager audiences in NYC on November 28 at 7:00 pm. The special public screening will take place at Japan Society (333 E. 47th Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues) and is in partnership with Toho International, who will release Godzilla Minus One in theaters across the U.S. on December 1.

Anime NYC Issues Heath and Safety Policies For 2022 Event

It wasn’t that long ago when we got the Health & Safety Update for the rapidly approaching New York Comic Con and if you missed that overview you can click HERE to review it. Just a short time ago we learned of the guidelines for the big Anime NYC event that happens in November.
