Reflecting On The 2017 Deaths In Music

If you’ve been reading the PiercingMetal website for a while then you already know that I occasionally need to share the sad news about deaths in the entertainment world. Historically speaking, I’ve been doing them since the days when I had “PiercingMetal Musings” as a side blog that had not yet been integrated into the main site as you see now. Back then I always felt weird about doing such posts but as much as good news should be announced so should the bad stuff and as a known “voice” for the Metal Scene, I try to keep up on them when the news hits the wire. Now with this being said, there is no way possible for me to address every single one of them based on the size of the team and the time that we have so starting this year I will be doing a larger rundown of many of the names that I think you would know. Some have already been discussed in our “In Memoriam” Features, and those artists will be highlighted so you can examine the longer toast that we did. Let’s start from the beginning of the year and raise a glass to their memories one more time.

The Smithereens Founder Pat Dinizio Has Passed Away (1955-2017)

Sadly, it seems that The Band in the Great Beyond has brought on another member, as New Jersey’s own Pat Dinizio, a founding member of The Smithereens has passed away at the age of 62. The musician had been dealing with numerous health issues over the recent months but was looking forward to getting back on the road as soon as possible. A statement from the members of the band is below:

“Today we mourn the loss of our friend, brother and bandmate Pat DiNizio. Pat had the magic touch. He channeled the essence of joy and heartbreak into hook-laden three minute pop songs infused with a lifelong passion for rock & roll. Our journey with Pat was long, storied and a hell of a lot of fun. We grew up together. Little did we know that we wouldn’t grow old together. Goodbye Pat. Seems like yesterday”. Technically speaking, I started my own 2010 music review year off in a very different fashion from the last one by seeing legendary Blues guitarist Johnny Winter. It was nothing less than inspiring but I would quickly get into the Metal vibe with the rousing show held by Korpiklaani and Tyr who had just played the other night over at the Gramercy Theatre. The season of Winter show made me realize how I still craved a little bit of difference because I felt that something else along these lines would best arm me for the Metal battles to come. They do say that variety is the spice of life year after all and that in the end would lead me to B.B. King Blues Club once again for an appearance by The Smithereens. To be brutally honest I have always been more of the casual fan of the band but really do count a healthy number of their tunes as favorites and with the band celebrating a thirty year career then it was about time that I rocked out with them. There was no opening band on the bill which originally bothered me but my buddy said that we should count on a very long set so I was game. Here is how the evening went for this very, very fun night.
