Everyone has a story, some get told, some never get told. One of the long overdue stories that needed to be told is the history of Black Sabbath as musicians. There has not been a really thorough chronicling of Black Sabbath’s influential career based on the music and the band. Until now, with Black Sabbath Doom Let Loose An Illustrated History by Martin Popoff

Ozzy Osbourne’s “Ozzfest” @ PNC Bank Arts Center (8/16/2007)

This year Ozzfest was going to be free and also find some of the most brutal of the Metal bands around as a part of it. Getting the ticket was easy if you followed some details and the capacity crowd affair found Ozzy taking the stage with the likes of Lamb Of God, Static X, Lordi, Black Tide, Hatebreed, Behemoth, Devildriver, In This Moment, Nile, and Chthonic as the Metal lead offs. Our travel to the show caused us some delays and hence missing a few acts but we were there to bring you the scoop so to see more just keep scrolling down past the logo. It was an incredible day of Metal under the blistering heat of the summer sun.

In 2007 it was decided that instead of charging an incredible amount for tickets that the Ozzfest event would be free of charge and be aptly referred to as “Freefest”. If the Metal Legions wanted access to the show they would need to follow advertising and sponsor promotional links or purchase the new Ozzy Osbourne album in order to potentially be allotted a pair of tickets. This might sound pretty straightforward but it was actually a little more confusing that many had expected it to be. There was talk of redeeming issues and continual internet run around which I can attest to being true as I tried to help my friend get his tickets for the area appearance in my vicinity. Since the show was going to be free it would mean that the bands themselves would not be paid and instead get all their operating capital from merchandise sales at each stop on the tour. Resultant of this the now free event would not attract what some people considered to be “top tier bands” and instead drew groups like Lordi, Behemoth, Hatebreed, Lamb Of God and Static X to its stages. I really had a problem with people who were making that statement because while a band like Disturbed and System Of A Down might be good and at times quite heavy, when compared to some of the bands that I just named, come up very short in terms of being in touch with the actual Metal scene of today. These “underground Metal upstarts” for the roster in 2007 would quite possibly go down in history as the MOST relevant lineup based on what is happening in the Metal world right now. This aspect appealed to me as both a journalist and fan of Heavy Metal music overall.

“Greatest Hits 1970-1978” by Black Sabbath

Artist: Black Sabbath
Title: “Greatest Hits 1970-1978”
Label: Rhino Records
Release Date: 3/14/2006
Genre: Heavy Metal
Rating: 9/10

Is there really the need for comments on a Black Sabbath “greatest hits” package in today’s world? Well, let’s review a few things before we decide on that. For starters we live in a world with no real music station to watch outside of a couple of good VH1 shows. The former major player in Rock video now caters more to bling-bling shows or idiotic Prom & Sweet 16 things; more kids who watch those stations know Ozzy more for his appearance as the Rock star on that reality show. We also live in a world where it took the “esteemed” Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame a number of years passed their eligible time frame to vote them in. They opted to place The Pretenders and others ahead and while some were good bands, none were as important to music as the mighty Black Sabbath. Given these factors I say yes, it is high time to review a CD like this, so let’s go to it.

“The Last Supper” by Black Sabbath

Artist: Black Sabbath
Title: “The Last Supper”
Label: Epic Records
Release Date: 1/1/2000
Genre: Hard Rock
Rating: 5/10

Black Sabbath is the band that started it all, they say. Hard Rock was given a new, darker edge and became Heavy Metal as a result of the efforts of these four Brits: Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler, Bill Ward and father of the Metal guitar Tony Iommi. Every Hard Rock/Metal musician has found inspiration in their music and most likely all have played a Sabbath song or two in their bands. Today their music holds a level of power still and is listened to with reverence. History was to be made at one of the Ozzfest concerts when the original members made an appearance (sans Bill Ward) and performed a couple of tunes to the elation of everyone present. Shortly after that monumental event, the discussions started and the wounds mended. From there a full world tour was planned for Black Sabbath’s official Reunion. The final shows were recorded for a live CD release and footage from these shows culled together to give the fans something to own as a reminder on video. The DVD is shot very well and the legendary songs sound pretty good considering there was not a lot of preparation time before the tour. However, I felt there were a number of concerns which proved this DVD to be a larger disappointment than I expected.
