“Happy Independence Day” 2018 Metal Legions

Since today is the Fourth Of July, the Independence Day of these United States, I wanted to have a little fun and share some of the songs that bring some American spirit to the song. Now these aren’t necessarily patriotic numbers of course but have our branding in them somewhere and I hope that you enjoy this little summary. Please know that clicking the album artwork will launch the song on Spotify or on YouTube if I couldn’t find a link there. You’re going to need a Spotify account to enjoy this best and by now you should have one anyway. Here we go.

“We’re An American Band” by Grand Funk Railroad: Recorded in 1973, this perennial by the great Grand Funk Railroad has long been a favorite of Rockers everywhere. Everything about this song is great from its rousing lyrical base to the overall melody and not only does it start with some solid drumming, but its sung by the bands drummer Don Brewer. It’s been covered a number of times but some varied artists over the years but the original remains the very best. I’ll be featuring a few of the covers as well for the sake of comparison but a little later on in the narrative.

“(You Can Still) Rock In America” by Night Ranger: Fast forwarding ten years in Rock Music history comes my very first go at the band Night Ranger thanks to this single from their “Midnight Madness” album. My friend had MTV (as we didn’t in NYC at the time) and when I saw this track I was an immediate fan and recall going out to buy the LP and the bands first album “Dawn Patrol” as well. At least I think that is how it happened but we are talking so many years ago but I digress. This tune is amazing from beginning to end as well with stellar guitar work and drumming and a lyrical base that finds you singing along right after your first listen. It’s still one of my favorites in the bands catalog and finds me screaming at the top of my lungs when I see them do it in concert.

Breaking News: Night Ranger’s Joel Hoekstra Joins Whitesnake!!!

Okay, so “breaking” is not the proper word since the news hit my frequency last night while I was covering the NYC appearance of Biohazard and could not hammer out a post for you right away. I felt that it was also best to wait a little while and do some confirmation because in these days of Internet hoaxes and fake news you just never know, so after a quick note to the man himself I can safely say that “yes Metal Legions, guitarist Joel Hoekstra has indeed joined the legendary Whitesnake”.

Poster - Night Ranger at BB Kings - 2014

The Details: In my humble opinion, Night Ranger continues to be one of the best Hard Rock bands that are still out there rocking their longtime fans along with those who might have been late to the party. They are providers of legendary tunes such as the radio blockbuster “Sister Christian” but as any diehard will tell you, that is just the icing on the cake when it comes to this band. I have to say that “Midnight Madness” remains one of my very favorite albums to this day but the guys don’t stop there as they will be delivering classics along with new material from “High Road” their latest release. With the holiday weekend upon us, I cannot think of a better way to make the summer even hotter than by hitting their show at the legendary B.B.King Blues Club and grill and thanks to their marketing team, PiercingMetal is going to be putting some fans into the show for free. Read more below on how to participate.

New Year’s Music Resolutions for 2014: Chapter 6

Welcome back. I apologize for the brief pause in the series but I did want to get the “Music Milestone” posting about “Defenders Of The Faith” live before too many days had passed and then we had some other things that were time sensitive in my Metal Presentation. So now we are back and hitting you with the sixth installment, I hope you enjoy it.

1. Joel Hoekstra (Night Ranger/Trans-Siberian Orchestra): For 2014, my New Years resolution is to cherish every moment onstage with Night Ranger, Rock of Ages and Trans-Siberian Orchestra and also give my all to a couple of fun recording side-projects I have going. It’s gonna be a GREAT year!

2. Kobra Paige (Kobra and The Lotus): Another new year is a wicked thing because not only does it mean more rip-roaring heavy metal memories, it means new music. This year is going to bring another musical evolution for Kobra and the Lotus and we can’t wait to share it! To all of our amazing supporters and new friends to come, we can’t wait to see you all out there. HORNZM/M
