It feels like forever ago that I first discussed the Heart “Love Alive Tour” (seen HERE in this post from February), The hectic yesterday finds me sharing the latest update from the folks handling the affairs of Heart nice and early this morning in terms of their tour extension but don’t fret none since its all good. Let’s take a look shall we.

HEART–ANN and NANCY WILSON–will extend their massive “Love Alive” cross-country summer tour into the fall with dates now taking the group through October. New dates include stops in Newark, Little Rock, Memphis, Kansas City, St. Paul and more with Joan Jett & The Blackhearts joining as very special guests and Lucie Silvas opening.
Tickets for the newly announced shows (indicated below) go on sale beginning Friday, June 21 at 10:00 AM (local time) at LiveNation.com. Tickets for the initial dates are on sale now. Citi is the official presale credit card for the tour. As such, Citi cardmembers will have access to purchase presale tickets beginning Tuesday, June 18 at 10:00 AM local time until Thursday, June 20 at 10:00 PM local time through Citi EntertainmentSM. Before I get too deeply into this one, this is actually a re-issue of a previously released concert video from 2003. It’s origins hail from the 2002 tour by Heart during their “Summer Of Love” touring run. To me, it’s always great when a band uses their tour closing night in a hometown venue to give the worldwide fans a commemorative concert video but since this is from fourteen years ago its also a bit of a live history lesson when it comes to the band. I never saw the original release and was not doing the journalistic overview thing yet, so this was a complete education for me. I found it interesting that despite my longtime love of so many of the Heart classics that I had only ever caught them in concert once and that was somewhere around 2008 unless I am mistaken. So, about the concert video; the film puts you right in the best seats possible and thanks to the camera angles you’re even right up on the stage with the band with the technicians standing in the sidelines.
Musically speaking the band sounds terrific and remember we are referring to the way, way back for this one. Truth be told, the friends who have seen them in recent times said they have not changed at all so that is a good thing to know at this point in time. The set list plays out like a Greatest Hits release of the band as they begin with the incendiary opener “Crazy On You” and follow it up with “Sister Wild Rose”. During “Straight On”, which is another favorite, Ann tells the crowd that this is the last night of the tour. During “These Dreams” it was nice to see guitarist Nancy doing the lead vocals as I had long forgotten that this was her first time doing so when the original album came out. That song was everywhere when it came to terrestrial radio of the day an its still great. When the band gets to “Alone” they decide to go acoustic for a little while and I didn’t like that personally since I am a fan of this track more than some others and I like its original version without much change. They keep it acoustic for the Elton John cover of “Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters” and once more Nancy takes the lead vocals while Ann offers up a solid backing. They follow this with their stellar rendition of Led Zeppelin’s “Battle Of Evermore” which is also acoustic and might bring some of their fans back to the time when they were doing a project called The Lovemongers. Kudos if you remember that one and even have the album. I know I still have my copy somewhere.

While it’s true that I make sure to attend and review a lot of concerts that come through the Big Apple for the sake of the Metal and Hard Rock fans for the web readers at large, it is not too often that I allow myself the luxury of focusing on the Classic Rock greats that got me interested in music in the first place. It’s also rather difficult to get outside of the NYC region when one considers just how many great bands manage to roll through town on a regular basis. Despite this being the case I actually needed to do this when I realized that I had missed the chance to see the one and only Journey perform at one of my favorite outdoor venues – the PNC Bank Arts Center. The band was not only celebrating a stunning new album, but also introducing their new singer and to up the ante on this tour they were bringing Cheap Trick and Heart along as well. My only option was to head up North about 90 miles to the site of the original Woodstock Festival of 1969, the beautiful Bethel Woods Center for the Arts. I was excited about this particular Rock and Roll journey because I had never been to the venue or the Woodstock grounds ever before and considering the historic nature of the property had to admit that this was going to be a whole lot of fun. My friends and I snared a parking space about a half miles walk from the venue and all around us were folks enjoying the warm summer day by cooking, playing music and indulging in the ever present pre-game beer drinking. The grounds are beautiful and its one of those places that on a clear day seems like the perfect cure for the 9-5 weekday blues. The venue is not too far from the original site and some markers and signs have been set up to commemorate the event and sadly I had not arrived early enough to absorb this spot or the onsite museum that the Center offers its visitors.
