The Best CD’s of 2005:
Mercenary “11 Dreams” (Century Media Records): One of the finest mixes of Metal genre to come out of Century Media records this year

Soilwork “Stabbing The Drama” (Nuclear Blast Records): This CD made a fan out of me, and is likely to do the same for you.

H.I.M. “Dark Light” (Sire Records): First official US Release and mixes elements of their previous work to a fine blend. Try this melodic gothic act out and you will not regret it.

Judas Priest “Angel Of Retribution” (Epic Records): Reunion, simple as that, they show why they are Metal Gods to this very day.

Iron Maiden “Death On the Road” (Columbia Records): The 40th live album from Iron Maiden shows up their last try and is quite enjoyable.

Korpiklaani “Voice of Wilderness” (Napalm Records): Ever hear Folk Metal? You will be a changed person when you do.

Leaves Eyes “Vinland Saga” (Napalm Records): Atmospheric Gothic Metal and this CD take you to another world.

Journey “Generations” (Independent): Anyone who stopped supporting Journey because of Steve Perry leaving is an idiot because Steve Augeri rocks. This is one of the best Rock records of the year.

“Carnival Of Sins” by Motley Crue

Artist: Motley Crue
Title: “Carnival Of Sins”
Label: Clear Channel Entertainment Home Video
Release Date: 10/25/2005
Genre: Hard Rock
Rating: 8/10

When they announced that Motley Crue would reunite and tour I was faced with a couple of different opinions on it. The first was my belief that there was no way that these four could be in the same room together much less be on the same stage for any length of time. This had come to me based on all the consistent in-fighting and solo projects that the various members were involved in. Nikki Sixx had the Brides Of Destruction while Tommy Lee had project after inane project that strayed so far away from his Rock roots that many lost interest in what he was up to altogether. There was always discussion of a “real” reunion that not only placed the four together but also would be a career encompassing show yet for awhile it was all talk. Luckily this came to fruition very early in 2005 where it seemed as though only weeks after the seal of approval on it that tickets were being sold and shows began to sell out in legendary venues like New York’s Madison Square Garden. This DVD documents a performance in Grand Rapids Michigan before a sold out crowd where The Crue delivers over a two-hour set. Presented as two DVD’s you will find the complete concert on DVD1. If you look over the set list you will that it includes a little bit of everything from their first album “Too Fast For Love” up until their recent Anthology release “Red, White And Crue”. I believe that even the most critical of fans will find something that they want to hear and see in this list. I enjoyed the early years of the Crue the most and remembered the show being as thrilling as the DVD reminded me. I did have a couple of minor criticisms as while the larger aspect was enjoyable I felt that the Tommy Lee drum solo left a lot to be desired. He was always one of the more creative of Hard Rock’s drummer elite but his solo was ridiculous samples and things that resembled street performers more than something a player of his caliber could have delivered. Given this almost retro nature of the show he should have pulled something else out of his history and done it again. Nikki’s solo was more interesting on video than I found it in person due to my proximity when it happened. Yet through it all the band performs admirably and every song sounds on target with a tighter sound than one would expect in such a short span of time they had to rehearse this. Out of all members it seems that Mick Mars is to be commended the most for his illness has really placed him in a rough spot. He can hardly move and looks very gaunt yet through it all he does not miss a note. As this DVD was filmed later in the tour Vince did sound a little worn vocally but still gets through everything like a pro. The audience reaction during all the songs is incredible.

“Red, White and Crue” by Motley Crue

Artist: Motley Crue
Title: “Red, White & Crue”
Label: Motley Records
Release Date: 2/2005
Genre: Heavy Metal/Hard Rock
Rating: 7/10

Motley Crue were always one of the most attention grabbing bands of the 80’s and epitomized the L.A. lifestyle of the rough and tumble musician of the time. They took the world by the balls and seldom let you get them back all that easy or intact. In addition to their career spanning boxed sets called “Music To Crash Your Car By”, they have released this Anthology/Greatest Hits piece “Red, White and Crue”. There is some good and bad stuff to say about this release.

CD 1 is superb as it contains almost every one of the legitimate hits that the band garnered early in their career. Almost everything you expect to find on this one is there, yet they could have included one or two more numbers from their first three albums and pushed the content onto the second CD that is in this package. I felt they should have included “Public Enemy Number One”, “Bastard”, “Red Hot”, and “Tonight” but we don’t get those. Instead when we move to CD number 2, we are given the lesser material or tracks one is not wise to include on a hits piece.

Motley Crue @ Madison Square Garden (3/3/2005)

Logo - Motley Crue

Artist: Motley Crue
Venue: Madison Square Garden (New York, NY)
Opener: n/a
Date: 3-3-05

I have to start this Concert Review by letting you all know that I was not going to this show. The reason being was because I did not have a ticket until about 2 hours before the doors opened to the venue. Yep, somehow this sold out for months show had last minute tickets made available to the public. Securing one in the eleventh hour was an amazing stroke of luck as I was lamenting this fact and simply decided to go online one more time and see what would happen. I guess what bothered me most was being a New York bringer of Metal News to the world and here is a reunion of one of the seminal bands in Hard Rock history. Top it off by having this at Madison Square Garden which is one of my favorite venues. This would no longer be an issue, on to the show I went.
