The Misfits @ B.B. King Blues Club (10/31/2009)

Logo - The Misfits

Artist: The Misfits
Venue: B.B. King Blues Club (New York, NY)
Opener: The Zombie Mafia
Date: 10/31/2009
Label: Misfits Records

After having so much fun at last Halloween’s haunted shindig at B.B. King Blues Club, I guess one could say that this evening would be a serious case of déjà “boo” as I returned to the scene of the crime this year to once again enjoy a performance by The Misfits. The 2008 gig was a whole lot of fun and found the club sold out to capacity and hosting a bevy of opening acts that all got into the spirit of things by dressing up for the most part themselves. Tonight we would only have one kick off act in The Zombie Mafia and since I had never heard them before this evening I would make sure to be inside early to get the scoop.

The Zombie Mafia: The show started rather early and when I arrived The Zombie Mafia was already beginning to do their thing. They all sported makeup of some kind and while one looked like a skull’s grim head another was made up as if he had the same makeup advisor as the guys in Immortal. Having no real background on them before this set I was not able to fairly gauge more than the opinion of their being “pretty good” at their game. They clearly had some fans in the crowd who were pushing them forward with applause and during the final number they would bring up a friend of theirs who would join them for the chorus. I was not sure if there was any deeper reasoning into this outside of it being something cool to do for a buddy and I am sure that this will be a nice memory for the kid to talk about for a while. I felt that The Zombie Mafia was better musically than vocally and observed how a very close tone to that of Danzig was being put out there by the singer. It’s not bad to do for this kind of music but I would rather hear someone be themselves as opposed to anyone else. There are already far too many bands that have guys singing in this register. Good luck to the band either way, and now the club was packed to the doors and it was time for The Misfits to take the stage.

Opeth “The Roundhouse Tapes” (Peaceville Records): Filmed during the “Ghost Reveries” tour and a follow up to the CD released last year.

Twisted Sister “Live At The Astoria” (Demolition Records): The SMF’s from NYC remind London and the world about why they are a Metal super power to this very day.

Within Temptation “Black Symphony” (Roadrunner Records): A stunning live concert performance that pairs the Dutch sensations with a full orchestra. This is an amazing show. Audio CD included.

The Misfits @ B.B. King Blues Club (10/31/2008)

The Misfits were nothing less than a ground breaking group when they formed so long ago and delivered unto the macabre music maniacs their unique brand of Horror Punk. While many lineup changes have occurred since the earlier days, the band now finds bassist Jerry Only accompanied by drummer Robo and guitarist Dez Cadena. Tonight for Halloween 2008 the band would perform a killer set of material with special guest openers Johnny B. Morbid, Until Destiny and Martyrd. We were on point to document the performance and also to rock out in proper attire for the night. Scroll past the logo below to be taken to our item.

Halloween Night in New York City is generally an unforgettable time and when you add to this fact that it was a Friday and was going to find me at The Misfits show at my home away from home venue of B.B. King’s, well, you can imagine the hell raising that was going to be taking place this evening. The interesting thing for me was that while a long time fan of the bands music I never caught them back in the day when Glen Danzig fronted them, but I did enjoy when the former singer did a short set of Misfits classics a few years ago during his tour and brought out the bands monster axe slinger Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein. The band is now comprised of bassist Jerry Only, guitarist Dez Cadena and drummer Robo who together deliver the classics like only this grouping possibly can. The spirit of the evening found me digging up an old mask and wig to walk among the costumed fans of the band that had convened inside B.B. King Blues Club and with the opening bands being three groups that I had already seen I was very excited to see what was going to take place this evening.

“Walk Among Us” by Misfits

Artist: Misfits
Title: Walk Among Us
Label: Ruby/Slash Records
Release Date: March, 1982
Genre: Horror Punk
Rating: 5/5 (Hell, if it were up to me it’s get a 9/5)

Back in the days before he fell totally in love with his own perceived awesomeness and launched his turgid solo act, Glenn Danzig fronted one of the finest and most unique of the American Punk bands, namely the Misfits (1977-1983), proof that not everything about New Jersey has to suck. When it comes to what would later ludicrously be dubbed “Horror Core,” there existed no better exponent of a genre that drew inspiration from horror movie culture, cheesy sci-fi flicks, and serial murder, and considering how far reaching the Misfits’ baleful influence proved to be over the three decades since their first recordings, their DIY legacy is even more impressive in retrospect. Possessed (pun intended) of the simplest of drum techniques — basically a “whomp-whack” that would have been at home on many early rockabilly tunes, unless sped up for the moshier numbers — a three chord buzz saw sound on guitar, and Danzig’s unmistakable vocals (simultaneously melodic as Hell and rather intentionally goofy/silly, depending on the song), the Misfits defined the genre they helped create, and their output sounds as fresh today as it did when first experienced.
