The Best CD’s of 2005:
Mercenary “11 Dreams” (Century Media Records): One of the finest mixes of Metal genre to come out of Century Media records this year

Soilwork “Stabbing The Drama” (Nuclear Blast Records): This CD made a fan out of me, and is likely to do the same for you.

H.I.M. “Dark Light” (Sire Records): First official US Release and mixes elements of their previous work to a fine blend. Try this melodic gothic act out and you will not regret it.

Judas Priest “Angel Of Retribution” (Epic Records): Reunion, simple as that, they show why they are Metal Gods to this very day.

Iron Maiden “Death On the Road” (Columbia Records): The 40th live album from Iron Maiden shows up their last try and is quite enjoyable.

Korpiklaani “Voice of Wilderness” (Napalm Records): Ever hear Folk Metal? You will be a changed person when you do.

Leaves Eyes “Vinland Saga” (Napalm Records): Atmospheric Gothic Metal and this CD take you to another world.

Journey “Generations” (Independent): Anyone who stopped supporting Journey because of Steve Perry leaving is an idiot because Steve Augeri rocks. This is one of the best Rock records of the year.

Megadeth & Dream Theater: “Gigantour” @ Mid-Hudson Civic Center (8/21/2005)

Logo - Dream Theater

Artist: Megadeth & Dream Theater – “Gigantour”
Venue: The Mid-Hudson Civic Center (Poughkeepsie, NY)
Opener: Symphony X, Nevermore, Fear Factory, Life Of Agony, Dillinger Escape Plan, Dry Kill Logic
Label: Capitol Records
Date: 8/21/2005

When I was offered the opportunity to cover the “Gigantour” it was a goal of mine to try and do this in a venue that I had never been to previously. Of course The Jones Beach Amphitheatre or the PNC Arts Center would have been an easier commute and travel but this is Metal and raising the bar a notch is what I am all about. I opted for the performance that would be held at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center in Poughkeepsie NY. As many Metal heads know by now the “Gigantour” is the brainchild of Megadeth’s mastermind Dave Mustaine. The show is colossal and features a number of varied and very interesting Metal acts. The roster for the show I would attend would be as follows: Bobaflex, Drykill Logic, Symphony X, Nevermore, Life Of Agony, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Fear Factory, Dream Theater and of course Megadeth. Not as numerous in line-ups as the Ozzfest, but in all honesty I prefer a festival to not be overblown either. It loses some of its appeal if there is too much going on and makes it very difficult to report on.

“Greatest Hits: Back To The Start” by Megadeth

Artist: Megadeth
Title: “Greatest Hits: Back To The Start”
Label: Capitol Records
Release Date: 6/28/2005
Genre: Heavy Metal
Rating: 8/10

Dave Mustaine has finally given the Legions of Megadeth followers the single most requested CD of all. A compilation of the bands greatest pieces all in one easy place to find them. There is no questioning the genius of Mustaine when it comes to putting together a great metal song, and he has many of them which make this piece a welcome addition to the catalog. Before this arrived the closest example of this we would have would be with the live CD/DVD “Rude Awakening” and the 2000 released “Capitol Punishment”. While the older hits piece was good and shares similar numbers from the new package, the live piece in particular had an amazing selection and was almost as good as a career compilation. It served as a better example until now. However, it with “Back To The Start” we have more tracks included and a little cleaner production than its predecessor. For me this was a plus since it included almost all of the Megadeth tracks that I have enjoyed over the years. Dave made sure to have a great amount of material on this piece and with 17 tracks you cannot go wrong. This CD is even perfect tailgate party music. There is nothing better than kicking back some beers with your Friends at a show, and cranking up the Megadeth (that is provided you are legal drinking age of course).

Megadeth @ Roseland Ballroom (11/10/2004)

Logo - Megadeth

Artist: Megadeth
Venue: Roseland Ballroom (New York, NY)
Opener: Exodus
Date: 11-10-2004
Label: Capitol Records

After the short hiatus due to a medical condition on his hand Dave Mustaine has recovered completely and not only recorded their latest opus entitled “The System Has Failed”, but also returned to the touring venues. This time around would be Roseland Ballroom in NYC. Openers would be legendary Bay Area thrashers Exodus but since I ran late that evening I missed their entire performance. I was not very happy about this since their latest CD has been very well-received. On talking with some audience members I was informed on how kick ass they had played. Oh well, I am sure they will return also. This seems to be a good year for metal shows, lots of great acts doing tours and almost everyone is hitting NYC.
