Airing Tonight: “Marvel’s Avengers Assemble” (5/26/2013)

If you are a fan of what’s been going on in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, then I say that its high time to pay a little mind to the smaller screen in your home (but if you are like me that is probably some kind of giant LCD screen so not too small in theory). That being said check out this new animated offering that features “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes” in “Avengers Assemble”. The poster and premise are below.

Out Now: “The Superior Spider-Man” #1 (1/2013)

Welcome to the Marvel NOW! Universe the premiere issues of “The Superior Spider-Man” which comes about a month after the cancellation of the long running “The Amazing Spider-Man” title that ended last December with issue #700.

Comic - Superior Spider-Man 1

So you all know a bit more about the premise of this new series, I have taken it from the official Wikipedia page of the title to bring you up to speed. Check it out.

“The Superior Spider-Man is an ongoing comic book series published by Marvel Comics that debuted in January 2013 as part of Marvel NOW!. The series is written by Dan Slott with artwork by Ryan Stegman, Humberto Ramos, and Giuseppe Camuncoli. It features a reformed Otto Octavius who has taken over Peter Parker’s body and, having allowed Peter to die in Octavius’ body but being affected by Peter’s memories, is determined to be a better Spider-Man than Peter ever was, and a better man than Otto Octavius. The title replaces the long running series The Amazing Spider-Man, after the conclusion of the “Dying Wish” storyline, as the core Spider-Man book.”

PiercingMetal Thoughts: Personally speaking I think that this is a wild premise for sure and since I grew up on the classic tales of the Web-Slinger and Peter Parker, I hope that his death was not exactly as it seemed and we find him back in the red and blue costume once again. I’ll likely be checking out this title when several issues are collected into a trade paperback or something but based on collecting space and time will not be able to snag each and every issue as it hits the stands in that fashion. What do you fans of Spider-Man think of this new and very different direction and the new premise? I will leave the comments open for you to offer up those views. I look forward to hearing from you about it.

Happy 90th Birthday To Stan “The Man” Lee

As a lifelong comic book fan here at the PiercingMetal Command HQ, I just wanted to take a quick moment to send a shout out of “Happy Birthday” to Stan “The Man” Lee who is 90 years old today.

Stan Lee’s real name is Stanley Martin Lieber and he is most famously known for being one of the founding fathers of the Marvel Comics universe and along with Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko helped to co-create Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, The X-Men, The Fantastic Four and far too many more others to list right here. It’s without question that I am a fan of his creations and love that he still holds the banner high for the industry. The photo above was actually taken at the 2011 NY Comic Con at the Javits Center and it was better than the one I snared of him at the 2012 event based on my proximity to where he was. When Stan hits the convention, it is like a visit from the president and I think he deserves it all.

PS: If you are a fan of Stan “The Man” Lee, feel free to post some well wishes in our comments section below and I will try and get this posting over to his publicity team so he can see it. Maybe we will have some luck and he gets it. In any case, I raise a glass and yell “Excelsior” in his direction. Congrats Mr. Lee.

Out Today: “Amazing Spider-Man” #700

Comic - Amazing Spider-Man 700

Today is the day that Marvel Comics’ own “The Amazing Spider-Man” title reaches its 700th issue and believe it or not, but after fifty years of continuous publication it will be its last as well. Now there have been numerous posted spoilers as to what is happening in the pages of the book so I will not be one of those who ruins it for other fans. I have read these spoilers and am a bit confused by the plans of writer Dan Slott but hey, it will surely be an interesting ride for sure and one that most readers never saw coming. I’ll admit that I have not been following this and many other titles as religiously as I used to but I did want to toast its achievement of 700 issues and can honestly admit that they had me along for the ride for many, many years.

A brand new Spider-Man saga and direction will begin next month with the premiere of “The Superior Spider-Man” and if you are wondering what the idea behind that rather grandiose title actually is, then you will just have to stay tuned and read it for yourself. It is a part of the brand new Marvel NOW initiative which is that company’s version of the couple of years old DC Comics “The New 52” efforts. Until then let’s get ready to say goodbye to 2012 and to a thrill ride and a half of the past fifty years of “The Amazing Spider-Man”.
