Marillion is one of those bands that always seem to use their time in the most effective manner. They do this by recording a lot, and touring in their native UK almost non-stop but one thing that always has stood out for me was the release of product from the band. It is almost every few months that we see something happening in the Marillion camp whether it be a CD or DVD or Book. Last year the group returned to the States to support the new CD “Marbles”. I went with some hesitation as it had been awhile since I liked “new” Marillion material yet I have to admit that I was blown away by the album (which was presented in its entirety as it seemed). The release of the DVD “Marbles On The Road” is perfect for any Marillion fan who either attended or missed it somehow and still wants to get part of the picture. Either of those fans would enjoy this piece in their collection. A wonderful mix of Progressive Rock, “Marbles” is clearly Marillion’s best effort in some years and not a second of the experience is lost in this concert film. Several years ago a close Friend of mine loaned me the “Misplaced Childhood” CD from Marillion. It soon became one of my very favorite pieces of music. The richly textured songs combined with the poetic lyrical arrangements made this the case. I would find myself looking for one particular song to enjoy and end up listening to the entire CD again and again. Marillion was one of those groups that you either liked immediately or did not even care about. It is a shame that some fine acts always fall into this mode with people. When I first heard them, I was totally into them. Over the past two decades of its existence Marillion has gone through lead singer changes (Fish left to be replaced by Steve Hogarth) and somewhat of a musical direction change. Albums had more “single” type songs than previous albums had. This DVD showcases the talents of the first lead Singer Derek Dick a.k.a. “Fish”. I have to be quite honest with you in admitting that I attended this show both expecting to be disappointed and for it not to be all that good. I must also say that I was completely wrong on both counts. You might wonder what made me come to such a drastic conclusion so early. Well, Marillion has been a tad difficult to follow here in the United States as it is very hard to get their CD’s which are all imports and hence on the expensive side. The last few albums they released also simply did not do it for me beyond one or two songs. When you add to the fact that they seldom tour the United States you get the picture. All of this was to change tonight. I stopped at a local pub first and ran into some visiting Brits who had actually followed the group from the UK to the USA. That was impressive and after several pints and these enthusiastic Brits I found myself inside a jam-packed Irving Plaza. The Venue is a nice place to see a group as it offers a decent sized floor area and some room on a balcony. Over 1,000 dedicated Marillion fans were in attendance and it was interesting to find out that the trip was fan club supported. This would be the bands first return in about seven years.
