“The Blackening” by Machine Head

Artist: Machine Head
Title: “The Blackening”
Label: Roadrunner Records
Release Date: 3/26/2007
Genre: Heavy Metal
Rating: 4/5

I remembered the first time that I heard Machinehead I had felt that they were a little too brutal for my tastes, but at the time I had been experiencing a slight Metal lameness. It’s on this frame of mind that I am choosing to blame my absolute lack of experience in the overall quality of the group. When “The Blackening” arrived and I spun it once around the changer I found myself almost finding something new and exciting once again. For a band that had been around for some time, there was a good chance that others would find this a new feeling as well based on some of what was happening on the new release. From first track to last, the new CD by these guys is an absolute cruncher of Metal and for the first time we find the band delving into some new territory by expanding the brutality with lengthy tracks. Let’s use the opening number for example with “Clenching The Fists Of Dissent” they clock in at almost nine minutes and while that is dangerously close to that of any top notch Progressive Band, they have not given us any long-winded experimental musical forays. Don’t get me wrong, in Prog its great but Metal it’s a risk. It’s thunderous drumming, on top of thrashing riffs and some seriously angry vocals all around here.

Lamb Of God @ Roseland Ballroom (3/22/2007)

Lamb Of God are wisely considered leaders in the NWOAHM, that’s “The New Wave Of American Heavy Metal” if you didn’t know and this show at Roseland Ballroom would be an excellent one. The sold out show featured the might of bands like Machinehead, Trivium and Gojira as their direct support and we made sure to document and photograph everyone on the stage. There are few shows that you walk into beforehand knowing that it will be an absolutely intense experience and I think this was definitely one of them. The return of Lamb Of God with the supporting lineup that they assembled was something that Metal fans would be talking about for a long time. We last caught LoG on Gigantour, the Megadeth shred-fest that offered fans a one stop shop for the newest heavy hitters in Metal and a place where some serious axe work was dished out. What’s great about seeing Lamb Of God is watching their meteoric rise to the top of the Metal mountain. I first saw them with Slipknot a couple of years ago then started listening more to their music. Caught them on Sounds Of The Underground where they headlined and then on the Unholy Alliance tour with Slayer (whew, talk about heavy). Each event was bigger in scope and reached more acolytes to their cause. Tonight at the bands headlining appearance in New York City we would see why they are so important to the genre. Here’s how I remember it.

“Classic Albums: Machine Head” by Deep Purple

Artist: Deep Purple
Release: “Classic Albums: Machine Head”
Label: Eagle Vision
Date: 11/19/2002
Genre: Rock
Rating: 8

Of all classic rock albums Deep Purple’s “Machine Head” probably has the most harrowing tale of gestation. As most rock fans know “Smoke On The Water” is not just a song with the most abused riff in music history but it also tells the story of how Deep Purple came to record in Switzerland and found themselves almost instantly in dire circumstances. This DVD from Eagle Vision documents that saga through interviews with Purple’s best known “mach” members, Ian Gillan, Ian Paice, Roger Glover, Jon Lord and Ritchie Blackmore, as well as producer/engineer Martin Birch.
