SiriusXM Presents: U2 Live At The Apollo Theater

Over the past few years, I’ve watched the folks over at SiriusXM Satellite Radio offer their subscribers some superb special concerts. These included In This Moment, Metallica and Guns N Roses. Now they have upped the game something fierce by just recently announcing that U2 will be doing a special show at Harlem’s legendary Apollo Theater. Check out the full press release below.

The Press Release:
SiriusXM announced today that U2 will take a one night detour from the “technologically advanced… sensational” (The New York Times) production of the eXPERIENCE + iNNOCENCE Tour 2018 to perform for the first time ever at Harlem’s world famous Apollo Theater. This special invitation-only concert exclusively for SiriusXM subscribers will take place Monday, June 11, as announced by Howard Stern today during his live SiriusXM show The Howard Stern Show.

The SiriusXM concert is a rare theater performance for U2, whose recent outings include the #1 grossing tour of last year, The Joshua Tree Tour 2017. The band will be playing material from current release Songs of Experience (Interscope) – ranked #6 in the Global Top albums of 2017– alongside classics from the storied U2 catalogue that has seen Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen win 22 GRAMMY awards to date, more than any other rock band. The special concert will be the first time the band, who paid homage to Harlem’s Billie Holiday on their 1988 song “Angel of Harlem,” has played the legendary venue. It is also the first time since their acclaimed 2000 Irving Plaza show that U2 will play such an intimate New York show—harkening back to the band’s roots touring the club circuit, a period revisited nightly during the first half of the eXPERIENCE + iNNOCENCE shows. The special concert will air following the performance via satellite on channel 30 and through the SiriusXM app on smartphones and other connected devices, as well as online at siriusxm.com.

U2 Announce “Songs Of Experience” Album And “The Experience + Innocence” Tour 2018

In keeping with the tour announcements, here is the latest from the legendary Irish Rockers U2. Check it out.

Songs of Experience, the 14th studio album from U2, will be released December 1st, 2017 by Interscope Records in the U.S. and via Universal Canada on CD, vinyl, digital download and across streaming platforms. Accompanying the announcement of the Songs of Experience release, Live Nation has confirmed that U2’s eXPERIENCE + iNNOCENCE Tour will begin in North America in May 2018.

Just as Songs of Experience serves as a companion piece to 2014’s Songs of Innocence, the eXPERIENCE + iNNOCENCE Tour will serve as a sequel to 2015’s iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE Tour which saw “U2 reinvent the arena show” (Rolling Stone) and was named the #1 concert of 2015 by The New York Times. The tour will kick off on Wednesday, May 2nd 2018 in Tulsa at the BOK Center. Full itinerary below.

Pre-order of Songs of Experience is available now and across all digital platforms will include three instant grat songs: The previously unreleased “Get Out of Your Own Way,” first single “You’re The Best Thing About Me” which was released on September 6th, and the album version of “The Blackout,” previously released as a performance video in August. All three songs are available now to stream across all platforms. Fans who pre-order the deluxe version of the album will also receive the Kygo remix of “You’re The Best Thing About Me.”

In addition to unveiling album artwork by Anton Corbijn, U2 has revealed the final tracklist of Songs of Experience which was completed earlier this year. The lyrical approach of the album was greatly inspired by Irish poet, novelist and Trinity College, Dublin Professor Emeritus Brendan Kennelly’s advice to Bono to “write as if you’re dead’, resulting in a collection of songs in the form of intimate letters to places and people close to the singer’s heart – family, friends, fans, himself.

U2’s “The Joshua Tree” Still Thriving @ 30 Years (1987-2017)

While it’s not exactly St. Patrick’s Day yet, today is surely a great day to get your Irish up because it is the thirtieth anniversary of the blockbuster album by U2 called “The Joshua Tree”. Yep. You fans of a certain age are probably shaking your head at the fact that is was on this day thirty years ago that you had added this one to your LP collection but its indeed true. The album was a hit almost immediately if I am remembering correctly and I remember hitting my local music seller shop to get a copy on CD. I had moved on from vinyl and was preferring this medium. Yes, I was a tried and true bleed for the Metal sort of guy but I really enjoyed the tunes that were playing on so many of the radio stations of the day. Back during this time, it was an album that EVERYONE I knew owned and it was easy to find this being the case since MTV was behind this album with a force that isn’t seen all that often in today’s media world. It came out on Island Records and was produced by both Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno and according to research has sold over 25 million copies since its release. That is some kind of accomplishment for sure.

Before I get any further I should stress how this is a toast and not a line by line overview of the release because that stuff is already well documented on its Wikipedia entry (provided at the close). I’m here to offer up some personal insight about what it meant to me as a fan. So in 1987 I was not only a fan of Metal stuff but I was also regularly playing my areas “circuit” but that didn’t deter my appreciation for this release. I had been a fan of U2 for a few years by then so I had some anticipation for this album and what it was going to bring to the table for their fans. There was no Internet yet so it was all traditional interviews in magazines like Rolling Stone or Billboard and the occasional news item on MTV. I mentioned hearing it everywhere and that extended into the seeing it everywhere since the MTV videos were numerous for this one. I think my favorite clips were “With Or Without You” and “Where The Streets Have No Name”. Below is the full original track listing so let’s review that and then I will line out the songs that were my favorites.

U2 Announces “The Joshua Tree” Tour For 2017

You can be sure that the band U2 will be doing things in a very big way as they embark on a tour to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of “The Joshua Tree” album and while this isn’t a “METAL” tour at all, I do like to announce the big Rock shows when they are unveiled as well since this one is going to be interesting. Check out the full press copy and dates below and then I will return with some added thoughts.

The Press Release:
The band will be out on the road again this summer celebrating the 30th anniversary of The Joshua Tree and performing the album in full, every night. In July the tour brings them home to Croke Park in Dublin, 30 years after the original Joshua Tree Tour’s two memorable shows at the Dublin venue in June 1987.

U2: The Joshua Tree Tour 2017 kicks off in Vancouver on 12th May for a run of dates across North America, and includes U2’s first ever U.S. festival headline appearance at the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival.

The tour then moves to Europe with the first stop in London on 8th July, finishing up in Brussels on 1st August and taking in their hometown show in Croke Park on 22nd July.

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds will provide support across Europe, with Mumford & Sons, The Lumineers and One Republic joining the tour through North America.
