As was widely circulated across the Interwebs over the last month or so, Spider-Man was effectively OUT of the MCU after Sony decided to pull the character out of the Marvel Studios stuff and get down to heavy productivity on their own Spider-verse. You might recall that Sony did a total of “5” Spider-Man films with “3” being with Tony Maguire and “2” with Andrew Garfield. The first two Toby films were solid but the third was a ramshackle mess and truth be told, the Andrew Garfield ones were not that compelling at all. Their last effort did so poorly that they planned on doing a Sinister Six and an Aunt May film before returning to a focused Spidey feature. Yeah good luck with that. It wasn’t until Marvel Studios Mastermind Feige presented an idea on integrating Spidey into his original and one true home with a film called “Captain America: Civil War”. It worked very well and showed just how much Spider-Man belonged back where he should be. Two Avengers and two focused Spider-Man films later it seemed all was lost when Sony decided to end the arrangement but fortunately for fans and most likely for Sony’s own pocket, a deal was reached and I’ve secured some official statements.
A statement from Kevin Feige reads: “I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it,” Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe. He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold.”
A statement from Amy Pascal reads: “This is terrific, Peter Parker’s story took a dramatic turn in ‘Far From Home’ and I could not be happier we will all be working together as we see where his journey goes.”
Most readers know that Sony has held the license for Spider-Man for a couple of decades and this was signed over to them from Marvel way back in the 90’s when they were dealing with tough times. Sure it might have saved the company from bankrupcy but I never liked this deal because it seemed to give Sony the full control of characters created long after the ink was dry. IMHO that sucks and of course leads to nonsense like this initial division. While Disney will help to co-finance the upcoming third Spider-Man film is a good thing since they will reap some of the profits for their hard work, I am fairly certain that like myself, most fans just want him back under Marvel’s full control. Sure the “Venom” film was entertaining, but it was okay at best and I don’t know a single geek who cares about a non Spider-Man themed “Morbius” film. Sorry Jared, maybe you should have stuck to playing The Joker (only kidding since that was a terrible version of him). Now according to what I’ve been able to connect on this, it will be a one thing at a time sort of arrangement with Disney integrating Spider-Man into select films while Sony continues to build their own thing. I’d like to see him back in full but they aren’t going to let that license go at all so let’s cross our fingers for the best. What do you readers think about this news?
