Tonight would mark my third visit to the halls of B.B. King’s in six days as they were really serving up the Hard Rock with some intent. We had a kick ass Y&T show this past weekend and a solid performance by Lillian Axe on Monday. That left us to the oft dreaded “hump day” where there is usually not a lot going on, but we would be lucky in the Big Apple for it was the return of Melodic Hard Rock champions Night Ranger. I’ll admit that even though my later years found me enjoying much heavier music as opposed to my mellowing with age, that Night Ranger’s material has always been a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. I had listened to the band since “Dawn Patrol” and enjoyed a number of its tracks but it was “Midnight Madness” that became one of my very favorite Hard Rock albums of all time. For tonight’s show there would be no opening band and I felt that there should have been since it would have given some up and comers a chance to impress the Night Ranger following. Oh well, I am only the scribe and not the scheduler of events so cannot help out more in that regard. The band would hit the stage at just around 8pm and kick it into gear with “This Boy Needs To Rock”; this is a definite rousing opener and shows that the band doesn’t need to work their way up to the rockers and can instead begin the set with them. For those who have been living under a rock, let me inform you about the juggernaut of musical enterprise that is the Trans-Siberian Orchestra – it is a power packed ensemble that first came into the public eye with the “Christmas Eve and Other Stories” CD and since that time has performed for record numbers of wide-eyed fans. Primarily a holiday themed group, the original premise of the TSO came from producer Paul O’Neill who was instrumental in a number of Savatage releases in terms of the musical direction that the group took. As a matter of fact the bands signature number “Christmas Eve Sarajevo” was originally presented on that bands “Dead Winter Dead” CD. The rest is as they say history. We’ve covered every release from the band and have seen them perform a number of times. Since the original time that I had this group in my no longer used “Artist Of The Month” section on PiercingMetal.com, a number of changes have happened with the lineup but the music and show grows bigger and better each and every year. I start getting goosebumps in anticipation of it happening around October when the tickets usually go on sale. Once you see it for yourself you will understand why. I fear that I am dating myself a little too much for my own good when I say that I clearly remember the first time that I had ever heard of Night Ranger. It was decades ago and a couple of the bands videos were in consistent rotation on the then fledgling cable network called MTV. My friends from out of state were getting it but NYC did not at the time and when I went for a visit we found ourselves glued to the station as “You Can Still Rock In America” was blasted at maximum volume. While not the bands first video, it was my own first exposure to them and I have been a fan ever since. It was easy to see this happening for anyone who rallied behind the band based on the catchiness of their material and its great melodic hooks and often memorable lyrics. Fast forward to 2009 where we find the legendary Hard Rock band performing for the very first time at B.B. King Blues Club for a very diverse audience. The show would only feature them on the bill and would start early and I had to say that the mood of the room seemed full of excitement as the guys took the stage.
