Today Is “Justice League Day” @ Participating Retailers (11/18/2017)

While the Warner Brothers Pictures film “Justice League” opened in theaters worldwide yesterday, today is a day that DC Comics has announced as being “Justice League Day”. That means that at your participating comic book retailer, you can get a shiny and free copy of the “Justice League – Justice League Day Special Edition” #1 while supplies last. Check out the movie inspired cover and then learn a little about the title below.

About The Issue: First chapter of the NEW YORK TIMES bestselling graphic novel, JUSTICE LEAGUE: ORIGIN! DC superstars Geoff Johns and Jim Lee make comics history as they re-imagine the classic heroes of the DC Universe, kicking off their iconic series, JUSTICE LEAGUE! In a universe where Super Heroes are strange and new, Batman has discovered a dark evil that requires him to unite the World’s Greatest Heroes! Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Aquaman, The Flash, and Cyborg unite for the first time to form the Justice League! Together, they begin an adventure that will decide the fate of the Earth! The only question is if there will be an Earth left to protect. (c/o Comixology).

PiercingMetal Thoughts: I love these surprise “Official Days” that the publishers announce as happening because anything that sparks the attention in the physical comic book medium is good in my book. We have gotten a yearly “Batman Day” that’s been discussed on the website (but this year was changed to “Harley Quinn Day” in honor of her 25th Anniversary) and as you know there is both “Free Comic Book Day” and “Halloween Comicfest” that each put a nice stack of free comic books in the hands of the fans and even the curious. This title is only a new branding on the first issue of “Justice League” that came out in 2011 as a part of “The New 52” initiative. Speaking frankly I would have preferred that the most recent “Justice League” #1 be reprinted but I was not a part of the decision making process. Closing out I must share that I have not yet seen the film since I have a convention to attend this weekend so I’m going to be tied up quite a bit. My hope is to catch it early in the coming week before the Thanksgiving holiday. I’m surprised that the opening was not showing as a stronger box office pull but let’s see what happens. There is a lot banking on this for the DC Extended Universe. Now go out and find this free issue because its while supplies last and if you are nowhere near a shop like that you can order one for your digital library care of the Amazon.com/Comixology link below. Enjoy.

Happy 25th Anniversary To Image Comics (1992-2017)

Yes my comic book loving friends, Image Comics was launched 25 years ago today and that makes Feburary 1st, 2017 “Image Comics Day”. I’m sharing a press release that I received the other day that discusses some of the offerings to be found today and some of the company’s origin story so please read on below. After that I’ll toss in some of my own recollections about that point in history since I was a regular collector of numerous titles. Here we go.

The Press Release:
On February 1, 1992 seven comics superstars Erik Larsen, Jim Lee, Rob Liefeld, Todd McFarlane, Whilce Portacio, Marc Silvestri, and Jim Valentino came together to form their own company that would changed the landscape of comics forever. Current partners McFarlane, Valentino, Kirkman, Larsen, and Silvestri collectively have brought creator-owned comics to the forefront of industry change and, after 25 years of amazing storytelling freedom, Image is pleased to celebrate the milestone anniversary with Image Day—Feb. 1, 2017.

PiercingMetal Thoughts: Back in the days when Image Comics was first announced, I was very heavy into the collecting of the weekly titles. It was shattering information because SO MANY of the Marvel Comics creative teams that my friends and I loved would be leaving titles that we looked forward to seeing their craft on each and every month. These were the long bygone days of the collectors purchasing a second, third and even fourth copy of a particular title. One for reading, one for posterity and the others to sell and make a mint off of at some point in the future. You’re laughing at my saying this but it was 100% truth. Somewhere in my storage unit lies a box that is packed from front to back with those earliest Image Comics issues from Spawn to Youngblood to WildC.A.T.S. to Shadowhawk. I pretty much collected them all when they first launched since each was so very unique and different to our eyes. Looking back on them I’d have to say that my very favorites were Spawn, Cyber Force and probably Shadowhawk. Alright Ill toss the fun of Savage Dragon in there as well since I didn’t miss an issue of that either. I’d keep up with Image Comics as a regular customer until the 2000’s when I slowed down completely based on finances being needed for other things as “Adulting” took over. Sigh. So, what were your favorites of the initial Image Comics releases? If you were collecting back in the day let me know your thoughts about this anniversary and what you loved about them. If you are more of a new collector of their stuff you can chime in as well with what you liked about them in the now. The comments section below is where you can add your three cents.

Please bear in mind that today is the anniversary of the company’s launch and the titles wouldn’t start coming out until a few months later. With so many of these reaching a 25th Anniversary along with this founding, you can count on several “Comic Book Milestone” posts right here on the website.

DC Comics Announces The Return Of The Milestone Universe w “Earth-M”

A few days ago, DC Comics made the announcement that the Milestone Universe of characters would be returning to print and existing in the Multiverse on Earth-M. Below you can find the full press release that was delivered. Take a look.

The Press Release:
Reggie Hudlin and Denys Cowan Team Up With Jim Lee and Geoff Johns to Bring A Lineup of Culturally and Ethnically Diverse Characters Back to DC Universe with Original Graphic Novels, One Shots, and Miniseries. During DC Entertainment’s (DCE) early morning press gathering, DCE Co-Publisher Jim Lee, producer/director Reginald Hudlin and Milestone Media co-founder/artist Denys Cowan (DETECTIVE COMICS) announced the creation of “Earth-M,” which will be home to the “Dakota” universe of characters from 1993’s Milestone Media and a host of all new characters.

For fans, this means the return of favorite Milestone characters like STATIC SHOCK, ICON, ROCKET, HARDWARE and XOMBI, along with new heroes and villains, yet still retaining the same kind of contemporary and socially relevant tone of storytelling that made Milestone such a groundbreaking imprint in the early 90’s.

“We couldn’t be more proud and excited about the opportunity to bring the ‘Dakota’ universe back to DC,” said Lee. “This is a huge step forward for us in bringing readers a more diversified lineup as part of the New DC Universe, and we’re anxiously looking forward to telling new stories that are socially and culturally impactful and representative of the world in which we live.”

Arriving as hardcover graphic novels, up to two “Earth-M” titles will be published annually, as well as a yet-to-be-determined number of miniseries and one shots. These books will feature all-star creative talent, including Milestone principals Hudlin and Cowan, as well as DCE top guns Lee and Johns. This agreement also means a revival of Milestone content as collected editions, both in print and digital format.
