PiercingMetal Thoughts: While I’m not the biggest of the vinyl collectors these days I just might have to break that stand and order myself copies of these releases and set them aside for the archive. I’m not too sure I want to do mail order of vinyl since I have little experience in this practice. I know a lot of my friends do it all the time so maybe its a non-issue. There isn’t a Walmart near our Metal Sanctum Sanctorum so its probably my only option. I do have a number of these albums remastered editions on CD already so as I close this news up I wonder what you think about it all. Will you be purchasing? Chime in down below in the comments section. See you next time.

Still Thrashin’! Metallica’s “The $5.98 E.P.: Garage Days Re-Revisited” Hits 30 (1987-2017)

Today is also the day that the mighty Metallica is celebrating a bit of an anniversary as their extended play “The $5.98 EP: Garage Days Re-Revisited” is thirty years old today. Do you own this one? I must admit that I do not have this on LP but clearly remember seeing it in the bins at numerous record shops back in the day when it had come out. However, since I didn’t recognize any of the songs that they were doing I just didn’t want to take a chance on spending money that could be used on something else KISS or Iron Maiden related at the time. You see back in 1987, I wasn’t really the biggest of Metallica fans but I did purchase their “Master Of Puppets” at Tower Records at the moment that it was uncrated with my friends. I discussed that Music Milestone HERE if you’d like to refresh your memory. Now as usual this is mostly personal recall instead of deep liner notes since you can read all of that stuff down on the Wikipedia link below. There is no sense in repeating what their editorials have already accomplished.

Celebrating 1/4 Century Of Metallica’s “The Black Album” (1991-2016)

Today is a great day my Metal friends because it is not only Friday but it’s also the 25th Anniversary of Metallica’s eponymously titled album “Metallica” or as I’ve liked to call it along with so many others – “The Black Album”. In honor of this Music Milestone I figured that I would share some personal reflections and key information about this particular release. Like always, the deeper, finer details can be found on the Wikipedia link below as it’s all there for the research. “The Black Album” was a real departure from the kind of Metal that Metallica was playing on its earlier albums and with the majority of the songs there was a slower pace to them and a crunching groove that allowed each song to seamlessly work together. When the album was released I was a much bigger Metallica fan than I had ever been in the beginning and despite the different sound, I found a good number of the tracks appealing. It was hard to not have this being the case considering that conventional Rock radio was playing Metallica songs and this was something I never thought I would experience unless it was a late night Heavy Metal showcasing program. “The Black Album” would come care of Elektra Records and was produced by Bob Rock.

“Katorz” (re-release) by Voivod

Artist: Voivod
Title: “Katorz” (re-release)
Label: Metal Mind Productions
Release Date: 11/11/2014
Genre: Hard Rock
Rating: 4/5

Originally released in 2006 on The End Records, “Katorz” is the eleventh album by the legendary band Voivod. The recording was recently re-issued by Metal Mind Productions and now comes in a Digipak holder but features no additional tracks or expanded liner notes. With that being the case my original thoughts on it remain the same and I have restated those views in the review that follows. The edition is limited to 2000 copies so diehards might want to act fast if interested in purchasing.

Everyone knows the phrase “with triumph comes loss”, but as I listened to the most recent release by the band Voivod, I had to wonder if “with loss comes triumph” as well. The reason I bring this theory to light is due to the sad truth that the group would lose founder and riff wizard Denis “Piggy” D’Amour to colon cancer in August of 2005. Prior to his illness and throughout his treatment demos were written and worked on in hope that he would recover and the new recording could be completed and released for their fans. When this would not be a possibility anymore and Piggy succumbed to the illness and died, the band was faced with what should be done and more important – what would be right to do. Before his death, Piggy had instructed drummer Michel “Away” Langevin on the whereabouts of the demos and that he wanted this music completed and reach their fans. From there it would be far from simple, but yet it would be done and the results serve as a fitting reminder to the creative musician D’Amour was. It’s an interesting album that sounds quite good especially when you take into account the means that it was recorded and what the members had available to them to do it. From the demos with Piggy’s last guitar work and Jason’s bass, drums were added by Michel while vocals were hammered out by “Snake” Belanger in his home. It is not the typical album creation scenario but the guys rose above it all. As you play this Hard Rock & Punk influenced album at any volume you will be hard-pressed to find any limitation to it. “Getaway” is a great opener and has a slight Motorhead vibe to which is never a bad thing and Snake has a great feel to his vocal here and on “After All” (two of my preferred tracks). An interesting observation to the recording is the tightness between bass and drums which was fantastic as while the two instruments are normally recorded together that was not possible for the demo work and found Michel figuring out the feel from the tapes. He shines through especially in how he slows down and speeds up as if he was sitting there with the other guys.
