Anime NYC and Japan Society announced today the 30 nominees for the inaugural American Manga Awards, set to take place on August 22, 2024, at the historic Japan Society in New York City. This event will precede this year’s Anime NYC convention, the largest Japanese pop culture event on the East Coast, which expects to draw over 100,000 fans of anime and manga from all over the world to the Jacob K. Javits Center in midtown Manhattan from August 23 – 25, 2024.

The American Manga Awards celebrates outstanding achievements in the world of Japanese comics, honoring professionals who have significantly contributed to manga’s popularity in both North America and Japan. These awards aim to elevate outstanding manga creators, great manga stories, and the publishing professionals who make these stories accessible to readers in the US and Canada.

The American Manga Awards Hall of Fame will honor Japanese manga creators and publishing professionals who have made significant contributions to the growth and popularity of manga in America. The first recipient of the Manga Publishing Hall of Fame award will be Frederik L. Schodt, translator and author of Manga! Manga! The World of Japanese Comics (Kodansha), one of the first English-language books that introduced readers to manga’s history, creativity, and legendary creators.

Anime NYC and Japan Society Announces First-Ever American Manga Awards

The 2024 American Manga Awards will be the first-ever awards program honoring manga: manga creators, great manga stories, and the publishing professionals who make it possible for readers in US/Canada to discover and enjoy these amazing characters and stories in English. It will culminate in a ceremony and reception hosted by author and translator Matt Alt and honor the works professionals including Frederik L. Schodt. The American Manga Awards is presented by LeftField Media, the creators and organizers of Anime NYC, the second largest Japanese pop culture event in North America.

It is co-organized by Japan Society, a leading non-profit organization that has been connecting Japanese arts, culture, language, business, and society with audiences in New York and the world since 1907. Anime NYC and Japan Society are excited to announce the launch of the first-ever American Manga Awards, set to take place on August 22, 2024 at the historic Japan Society in New York City on the eve of this year’s Anime NYC convention, expected to draw 100,000 attendees.

This first-ever American Manga Awards will celebrate the outstanding achievements of professionals in the world of Japanese comics, who have made significant contributions to manga’s popularity, both in North America and Japan. The manga market in North America has quadrupled in the past four years, and popular manga series regularly top the bestseller lists. Many of the biggest global entertainment franchises from Japan including Attack on Titan, One Piece, Dragon Ball, My Hero Academia, Spy x Family, and Sailor Moon originated as manga series, and based on 2023 data, manga was the 4th largest category in the U.S. book market, according to Kristen McLean, Senior Executive Director of the Circana Entertainment Knowledge Group. In recognition of this, the American Manga Awards will launch focused on elevating manga creators, great manga stories, and the publishing professionals who make it possible for readers in the US/Canada to discover and enjoy these amazing characters and stories in English.

The Japan Society Announces East Coast Premiere of “Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM”

Japan Society, a 116-year-old nonprofit organization with a goal of bringing the U.S. and Japan together, today announced it will host the East Coast Premiere of the record-breaking Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM. The Gundam saga, often called the “Star Wars of Japan”, is a beloved 40+ year franchise. Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM is its latest entry and a sequel to 2002’s Mobile Suit Gundam SEED, one of the most popular series in the Gundam multiverse. This special event is presented together with Bandai Namco Filmworks and Anime NYC, and it will take place simultaneously with a West Coast Premiere hosted by Bandai Namco Filmworks in LA.

The subtitled premiere of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM will take place on Sunday, March 31 at 4 PM and the English dubbed premiere will take place on Monday, April 1 at 7 PM. Both screenings will be held at Japan Society.

Japan Society is a storied institution that has presented Japanese art, culture, business and policy for over a century, including visits from U.S. Presidents, Japanese Prime Ministers, and Nobel Prize winners. It presents this new Gundam film in recognition of Gundam’s cultural significance in Japan and global place as a pillar in the U.S.-Japan relationship and our shared popular arts.
