Dream Theater @ Radio City Music Hall (4/1/2006)

Logo - Dream Theater

Artist: Dream Theater
Venue: Radio City Music Hall (New York, NY)
Opener: n/a
Date: 4/1/2006
Label: Rhino Records

Has it been twenty years since the world first had Dream Theater appear and bring Progressive Metal into the future? According to the band themselves this is the case and tonight at Radio City Music Hall in their hometown they would close out the “Octavarium” tour in front of a sold-out audience. It seemed like just recently that the band released this album and jumped quickly on “Gigantour” with Megadeth to do a co-headlining event that if done again better might very well rival that of Ozzfest. This series of shows brought Dream Theater to an entirely new audience in a lot of ways if you asked me, for with many of the bands being straight ahead Metal, and not Progressive there were more Metal people in the audience who would get to hear Dream Theater music for the first time. Those who have every attended a show at Radio City Music Hall (RCMH from now on) can attest that this is the perfect venue for a band like Dream Theater. It is acoustically sound, and from almost every seat you can get a great view of the show. You just have to worry if someone stands in front you, and a band like this is more sit and enjoy the performance rather than remain standing. The bands virtuoso nature works very well in this place and even from far away you could tell the smiles were on their faces. The group has been around for awhile and has toured the world a number of times, but it has to be special to play such a legendary place on the final night of their tour. To commemorate the occasion Dream Theater had announced in advance that this performance would be recorded for a soon to be released DVD. Given that announcement I expected the evening to be superior to everything else I had ever witnessed before.

“Elements Of Persuasion” by James LaBrie

Artist: James LaBrie
Title: “Elements Of Persuasion”
Label: InsideOut Music
Release Date: 3/29/2005
Genre: Progressive Metal
Rating: 7.5/10

Vocalist James LaBrie of the influential progressive metal titan “Dream Theater” recently completed recording his solo release entitled “Elements Of Persuasion”. It is indeed a nice addition to his recent work with both Dream Theater and Arjen Lucassen. The album stands along side the heavier material of Dream Theater very well, and LaBrie fans will also find the music a little different than his work with “Mullmuzzler”. The record is more akin to a release by Theater with the songs holding similar creativity and structure but all remaining at about 5 minutes in length. There are a significant amount of catchy hooks and riffs and I found overall the album was very easy to enjoy. The toughest audience is generally the Progressive one, and given most of them coming to Dream Theater shows to hear the amount of musical virtuosity the singer often is the last point of interest. However, James has put together a pretty solid group to record this piece and joining him is Matt Guillory (keyboards), Marco Sfogli (guitars), Bryan Beller (bass) and Mike Mangini (drums). Surely this band will impress even the most die-hard of progressives. I admit finding the guitar work of Sfogli super impressive with his shredding along the lines of John Petrucci. With this release LaBrie focused his writing to touch upon the consistent give and take in relationships between people.

“The Human Equation” by Ayreon

Artist: Ayreon
Title: “The Human Equation”
Label: Inside Out Records
Release Date: 5/25/2004
Genre: Progressive Metal
Rating: 9/10

Multi-instrumentalist Arjen Lucassen has once again crafted a diverse and interesting piece of music for his many fans. Following his successful touring with his “Star One” project this recording might very well be considered Ayreon’s finest work of them all. Like most of his musical adventures, Arjen makes sure to use a cast of performers that are second to none in the world of Progressive and Heavy Metal music. Among them is cast the newly discovered Marcela Bovio who Lucassens found from an Internet contest entry. Her voice is amazing and one can only hope that this is only the beginning of what we will see from her. James LaBrie of the mighty Dream Theater also lends his voice to the piece as the principle character and so does Michael Akereldt of Opeth. The list continues on with Irene Jansen, Devon Townsend and many others. Truly a who’s who in the world of popular Metal and Rock. The story that is lined out this time focuses on the central character who is lying in a hospital bed after a terrible accident. This setting is the polar opposite from his space and fantasy themes of the past. The character is watched by his Wife and Best Friend in hopes of his recovery. At the same time his mind is paid visit by many different emotions and memories; all of them vying for his decisions in the healing process. This was one CD that I was finding myself lucky in seeing a lyric book inside. You need to read along with this piece as you listen. An added part of the appeal I found was the enjoyment of the story itself.

Megadeth & Dream Theater: “Gigantour” @ Mid-Hudson Civic Center (8/21/2005)

Artist: Megadeth & Dream Theater – “Gigantour”
Venue: The Mid-Hudson Civic Center (Poughkeepsie, NY)
Opener: Symphony X, Nevermore, Fear Factory, Life Of Agony, Dillinger Escape Plan, Dry Kill Logic
Label: Capitol Records
Date: 8/21/2005

When I was offered the opportunity to cover the “Gigantour” it was a goal of mine to try and do this in a venue that I had never been to previously. Of course The Jones Beach Amphitheatre or the PNC Arts Center would have been an easier commute and travel but this is Metal and raising the bar a notch is what I am all about. I opted for the performance that would be held at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center in Poughkeepsie NY. As many Metal heads know by now the “Gigantour” is the brainchild of Megadeth’s mastermind Dave Mustaine. The show is colossal and features a number of varied and very interesting Metal acts. The roster for the show I would attend would be as follows: Bobaflex, Drykill Logic, Symphony X, Nevermore, Life Of Agony, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Fear Factory, Dream Theater and of course Megadeth. Not as numerous in line-ups as the Ozzfest, but in all honesty I prefer a festival to not be overblown either. It loses some of its appeal if there is too much going on and makes it very difficult to report on.
