The Press Release:
GRAMMY®-winning, progressive music titans Dream Theater are announcing the return of drummer Mike Portnoy to the group. Portnoy will reunite with guitarist John Petrucci and bassist John Myung – the trio formed the band at the Berklee College Of Music in 1985 – along with longtime members, vocalist James LaBrie and keyboardist Jordan Rudess. Dream Theater will be going into the studio to begin working on their 16th studio album and the first with Portnoy since 2009’s Black Clouds & Silver Linings.

“I understand Dream Theater’s decision to get Mike Portnoy back at this time,” states Mike Mangini. “As was said from Day 1, my place was not to fill all the roles that Mike held in the band. I was to play the drums in order to help the band carry on. My main role of keeping our live show working tightly on a nightly basis was an intense and rewarding experience. Thankfully, I got to experience playing music with these iconic musicians, as well as some fun times laced with humor. I also really enjoyed spending lots of time with the crew. And then there’s the GRAMMY® win, which was amazingly satisfying. To the fans: thank you so much for being amazing to me. I cherish the pictures I have of you all losing your minds and having fun. Finally, I really love the band, crew and management and wish them and the entire organization all the best.”

Devin Townsend Postpones Remaining “Empath” Dates Over Coronavirus Concerns

The Statement:
It is with immense disappointment that I have been put in the position to announce the postponement of the remaining dates on my Empath Vol. 1 North American Tour due to Corona Virus.

With the travel ban In effect from Europe and the consequent chaos that has brought to travel plans, as well as the increasing social unrest, combined with the fact that half of this crew is either European or from the UK, it put us in a tenuous position. Several of the dates have been cancelled by the state, and I suspect many more to come.

PiercingMetal Thoughts: I’ve happily witnessed the musical mayhem that is a Devin Townsend tour, whether it be with his Strapping Young Lad era, the Devin Townsend Project era and now his solo stuff and its always a good time. Though it’s been a few years since my last go round I am excited about this news since I’ve not managed to catch either or these two opening acts yet. Despite our still having a few months left in 2019, it seems safe to say that 2020 is going to start off with a solid run of groups. What do you think about this tour news? Chime in down below in the comments. See you next time.

With three weeks left on that run, the band is turning its attention back to North America with the announcement of the next leg of the acclaimed The Distance Over Time Tour – Celebrating 20 Years of Scenes From A Memory. The first leg of tour gathered plenty of critical acclaim and fan praise due in large part to the diverse setlist the band created. Dream Theater featured tracks from their latest release Distance Over Time (InsideOutMusic /Sony Music) and selections from their 30-year career along with a nightly celebration of the 20th Anniversary of their seminal concept album Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From A Memory that the band performed in its entirety. The band will continue that trend on the Fall tour to create an evening of over 2 hours and 45 minutes of Dream Theater at their masterful best making this a concert event to not be missed.
