“Spawn” #311 (Todd McFarlane Variant)

“Given the limited amount of minority characters in the comic industry today that are considered major Superheroes, I thought it appropriate for one of those well-known heroes (Spawn) to pay tribute to a man who made a lasting impact on helping shape such a strong superhero of color,” said McFarlane. “Chadwick Boseman is a person who honed his skills and then made a career using them. Then he fought a fight against his own body that showed the true spirit of this man. We should all admire the traits Chadwick shared with us. And the inspiration he gave to millions of children around the globe who got to see a strong, meaningful and proud hero that looked like themselves.”

Image & Comic Book Legal Defense Fund Team-Up For Anti-Censorship Variants In September

The Press Release:
This September, Image Comics fights censorship with a powerful line of variant covers to benefit Comic Book Legal Defense Fund (CBLDF), the industry’s voice for free speech advocacy and education. All proceeds from this dynamic campaign will support CBLDF’s important legal work on behalf of comics creators, retailers, educators and readers.

All proceeds from this campaign will benefit CBLDF, with each title featuring two versions of the CBLDF Charity variant—one censored and one uncensored. Image Comics is pleased to reveal the censored versions here. Spearheaded by HACK/SLASH creator Tim Seeley and Image Comics’ Publisher Eric Stephenson, this benefit includes contributions from Skottie Young, Mirka Andolfo, Howard Chaykin, Justin Greenwood, Geoffo, Ryan Browne, Wook-Jin Clarke, David Rubín, Martin Morazzo, Mark Torres, Danny Luckert, and Seeley himself.

“Comics have been uniquely affected by censorship since the very beginning,” said Seeley. “I wanted to do something with my fellow Image creators to call attention to the problem, and to raise money for CBLDF to help their efforts to fight back. They own the Comics Code Seal of Approval, the censorship stamp that used to govern almost all comics until that organization died in 2011. We thought we’d bring back the Code for one month, to show how ham-fisted those censorship attempts were while having some fun making money for the CBLDF’s important work.”

Image Unveils “Spawn” #286 “We Believe In Colorists” Variants

Hey my fellow comic book fans, I am back with another interesting crop of variant cover editions and this time its the colorists that will be getting the love as a number of hot industry names take on the cover of an issue of “Spawn”. Read on down below and check out the stuff provided to us by Image Comics PR.

The Press Release:
PORTLAND, OR, 04/03/2018 — Image Comics is pleased to reveal the black and white SPAWN #286 cover artwork by legendary artist Todd McFarlane and the seven Colorist Appreciation variants that display the high impact of colorists on the artistic medium.

A selection of bestselling colorists — Moreno Dinisio, Frank Martin, Matthew Wilson, Owen Gieni, Annalisa Leoni, Nikos Koutsis, Jean-Francois Beaulieu — each put their own spin on the same McFarlane cover for these #WeBelieve in Colorists variants, and each cover displays their radically different techniques and stunning results.

“Colorists’ important contributions to our medium cannot be overstated, and even the best artwork can benefit from the involvement of just the right colorist,” said Eric Stephenson, Publisher at Image Comics. “When I’m watching pages come in for a comic from the first pitch to the finished project, it’s often when the colorist gets involved that the book really begins to take shape, when the personality of the artwork and the storytelling really shine through. Once upon a time, colorists were just the last stop on the production train, but today, colorists are essential and trusted collaborators—often moving with artists or writer/artist teams from project to project. Every colorist has their own voice, and there’s no better way to highlight just how different finished artwork can look than by showing off the handiwork of seven different colorists and how their approach has impacted a single piece of artwork. We’re all thrilled with the result, and we hope you’re equally excited to see how the same artwork can look in the hands of multiple colorists.”
