New Year’s Music Resolutions For 2013: Part 9

They say that the cat has nine lives and such would be the same for this blog series even though I have a couple of more chapters to present to you fine readers. We’ve gotten some great stuff from the musicians and creative entities who were kind enough to participate in the series. So without any further adieu “Welcome to Chapter 9 of our New Year’s Music Resolutions for 2013”.

1. Ronny Munroe (Metal Church): My New Year’s Resolution: To continue to grow musically and mentally, and to put out the best music of my career, wether it be with Metal Church or my own music. That’s it 🙂

2. The Last Vegas: The Last Vegas’ New Year’s Resolution for 2013 is to go organic. Not in a dietary sense mind you, but artistically going back to the raw, the real, the look into your soul to see what is in there and what you can pull out that truly sticks to your and your listeners’ bones. In today’s modern musical climate, the competition for listeners’ attention is fierce, fast and fleeting. Plug in straight, bypass the bullsh*t meter, and get the direct-connect. Any yahoo can have great hair…

3. J.R. Gurrieri (Slam One Down): To Get on the biggest tour that we can and support some great Heavy Metal Bands and to write and record a better record than the one we just put out.

New Year’s Music Resolutions For 2013: Part 8

We are off and running my dear readers in The Metal Republic and while it’s only day two of 2013, this is actually part eight of our “New Year’s Music Resolutions for 2013” from Metal and Hard Rock greats. Someone asked me why I actually started this just after Christmas, and well the answer is simple….I started them on 12/26 because I wanted to is why 🙂 Being serious, I do it like this to give you readers something new and interesting as the year closes since its generally a dry time for big happenings. It also lets me better space out the responding quotes. Now onto the regularly scheduled program….

1. Mo “Royce” Petersen (Tragedy: Heavy Metal Tribute To The Bee Gees): We resolve to look like Manowar by the end of 2013. (We already sound exactly like them)

2. Addiction For Destruction: Addiction For Destruction are looking forward to on tour over the world in 2013 and releasing a couple of new videos! We want to keep building our international fan base. Train keeps rollin’, stay tuned!

3. Steph Paynes (Lez Zeppelin): That Lez Zeppelin will be invited to play the Isle of Wight Festival, followed by a UK Tour, during which many magickal things will happen…

Paul DiAnno @ B.B. King Blues Club (12/21/2010)

Artist: Paul DiAnno
Venue: B.B. King Blues Club (New York, NY)
Opener: Icarus Witch, Shitkill
Date: 12/21/2010
Label: Independent Artist

Considering I had only seen him perform at the beginning of the year, I was debating whether or not I should go out to see Paul DiAnno in concert once again because how much different was it going to be from the last time right? The show in January was a good enough time for those of the Metal Republic who came out to support the one time Iron Maiden singer and it had been a long time since he had been able to come and do that. The decision was easy once the venue announced how the singer was planning on delivering the full “Iron Maiden” album along with selections from their second album “Killers” on their show posters. That was a good thing since the last time around a common complaint from those I spoke with was that he did too much “other stuff” and should have kept it strictly Maiden.

The openers for the show would be some young Metallers that went by the name Shitkill and I would miss them entirely. Some friends in the realm have high hopes for them but I do fear for their success rate across the board with a name like that. I guess as I get older that I am getting a little wary of some things in the music scene. I hope to hear them sometime and I do wish anyone who wishes to make their sound known in Metal all the best. Following this very short set would once again be Icarus Witch who I last caught as the openers for Y&T over the summer. At that gig they really impressed me and I think that the bands new singer really upgrades the bands game. They are a traditional based Metal band and pretty solid as a live act. I would give them a listen if you are only just now hearing their name. Their latest album is called “Draw Down The Moon” and its on Cleopatra Records should you like to investigate further. They sounded great tonight but I didn’t make note of the set list being performed. A lot of it sounded like what we get on the album which makes it an even sounder recommendation. Now for the return once again of Mr. Paul DiAnno.

Y&T @ B.B. King Blues Club (8/7/2010)

Venue: B.B. King Blues Club (New York, NY)
Opener: Icarus Witch
Date: 8/7/2010
Label: Frontiers Records

Whatever the occasion might be, you always can be rest assured that when you go to see a Y&T show, that you are in for a rocking good time. The funny thing for me is that even though I have known about their music for a very long time, it was not until I picked up the role of Music Scribe that I began to catch them in action and this would be long after their initial heyday and short hiatus. Since their inception in 1974 the band has gone through some lineup changes but remained active in the Hard Rock scene despite a few years of hiatus before getting back to business. For the last few years we’ve been catching what appears to be the lineup for the duration as joining founder Dave Meniketti and bassist Phil Kennemore would be drummer Mike Vanderhule and guitarist John Nymann. Truth be told as long as we had Dave and Phil working together up there the rest would fall into place. Sadly, the news about Kennemore requiring back surgery and pulling off of the tour would come shortly before this gig would take place and filling in for him for the rest of the tour while he gets treated and recovers would be bassist Brad Lang. The show would feature only one opener in Icarus Witch and here is how the night went down for those who didn’t manage to attend.

Paul DiAnno @ B.B. King Blues Club (1/27/2010)

If you own the first two albums by Iron Maiden, which you of course should as a self-respecting Heavy Metal fan, then you know full well about the legendary greatness of Paul DiAnno. He was the voice behind their debut release Iron Maiden and its blockbuster followup Killers and it was reported that the USA had not seen a tour from original Iron Maiden vocalist Paul DiAnno in something like fifteen years and while I couldn’t verify that with great certainty I could agree that it was a very long time since I had seen his name on any concert marquee. Fortunately for all in attendance, this evening at B.B. King Blues Club the Metal faithful of NYC would be treated to an evening of bona fide Maiden classics and I am sure that Paul would toss a couple of surprises in there for good measure as well. The crowd arrived early which was a good thing and it was nice to see the venue crowded for the second day in a row. Last night had been the Metal tribute act HAIL! and while they did a seminal early Maiden tune, Paul did not drop in for an unplanned visit. I think he had a show of his own last night but now all that mattered was that he was back in the New York Groove if I could borrow a line from Ace Frehley. The show would find Power Metal favorites Operatika starting off the night and a set from Icarus Witch. Let’s rock.
