Judas Priest @ PNC Bank Arts Center (6/10/2005)

Logo - Judas Priest

Artist: Judas Priest
Venue: PNC Bank Arts Center – Holmdel, NJ
Opener: Queensryche
Label: Sony Records
Date: 6/10/2005
Genre: Heavy Metal

As much as I enjoyed the teaser set at last year’s Ozzfest, there was little that could bring down my level of excitement when I found out that Judas Priest would be touring the States again as a reunited band with Rob Halford leading the charge. As an added treat they had decided on Queensyche as their opener for this tour. It was a smart choice as Queensryche is always good live, however I felt Priest would have been better served by some promising up and coming Metal band. As one can expect Queensryche is continually good in live performance. Geoff Tate walks the stage with such a regal presence, he always has. Guitarist Mike Stone was sporting a greased up Mohawk this time making him appear to fit in more with a Blink or Charlotte band more than The ‘Ryche and he really rips of the guitar. Scott Rockenfield is using two bass drums once again which I am pleased to report and he is also showcasing his “RockenWraps” product. Every drum on his kit had them and it’s an interesting concept in customization to say the least. Eddie Jackson and Michael Wilton continue to impress me to this very day. Seasoned professionals all around. While it is a shame that Chris DeGarmo never returned for any of these killer shows (the live “Mindcrime” presentation last year and now the Priest tour), it seems as though the audience is no longer affected by it. Tate has also commented recently that the door is closed on that return at this point.

“Angel Of Retribution” by Judas Priest

Artist: Judas Priest
Title: “Angel Of Retribution”
Label: Epic Records
Release Date: 3/2005
Genre: Heavy Metal
Rating: 8.5/10

The new Judas Priest is probably one of the most anticipated metal releases of the year 2005. This is the due to the fact that Rob Halford once again is fronting the group on lead vocals. Yes indeed, the “Metal God” has returned to the group after successful Solo endeavors with both “Fight” and “Halford”. While he also had the group “Two” with Trent Reznor, it’s impact/success are at best questionable. In his absence the band continued along for 2 albums with the talents of Tim “Ripper” Owens (now of Iced Earth) on the microphone. Each group continued to bring metal to the masses in the best fashion possible. However, the impact on either side was not felt as much as one would expect. When news came of Rob Halfords return – ripples were felt across the metal community.

“Electric Eye” [DVD] by Judas Priest

Artist: Judas Priest
Title: “Electric Eye”
Label: Columbia Music Video
Release Date: 10/2003
Genre: Heavy Metal
Rating: 8/10

The literal shortage of DVD product from Judas Priest alone makes this something that is worth picking up from the local music store or your favorite online dealer. This DVD not only features every Judas Priest video ever made and a full concert from the “Fuel For Life” (“Turbo”) tour. It also features a score of BBC live appearances. Truly a value packed item for the dollar. Looking back on the videos section you have to admit that they were a bit cheesy. Yet “Breaking The Law” and “Living After Midnight” are timeless in the minds of the older Priest fans who remember when MTV not only played videos but also played a lot of metal music (yes, there was such a time). Of course, at the time the format of music and video together was new. Bands were still feeling the ground of combining their musical expressions along with the visual medium and the ways it could be made to work. To this day my very favorite videos remain “Freewheel Burning” and “Painkiller”. However I will leave discussion of “Hot Rockin” for another person. than the videos that they released for being honest, Judas Priest videos were pretty cheesy.
