Wednesday 13 @ Blender Theater at Gramercy (3/4/2008)

Wednesday 13 was in town once again and this time around he had Acey Slade on guitar so we couldn’t miss the chance to enjoy some morbid Rock and Roll. It’s always a good time when this group comes to slay us so should you want to learn more just scroll past the logo below.

I’m not sure exactly how it happens, but it always seems to be a dreary and gloomy night when Wedesday 13 and his morbid band of musicians come to town. Such was the case again for the singer/guitarists return to the New York City area for an appearance at the Blender Theater. The night held a slight chill as mist swirled about where the cool met the damp and together added a slight sense of foreboding to the antics that would ensue inside the venue. I’ve caught this groovy ghoul a number of times over the last year and seem to have enjoyed him more and more as each time goes by. The last time he dropped by was in October where he did a show at the Europa Club in Brooklyn. The show that night was great but the numbers in the audience could have been better and I had to say that I felt the stage was far too small for such an energetic player. Luckily for us the stage at Blender would be much better for the type of show that Wednesday 13 and his band gives to everyone. Starting off the night as openers would be Creature Feature and the AKA’s. I would miss the CF guys tonight which was a shame since I liked them the first time I caught them at the Europa show and the AKA’s were more of a Rock/Punk act as opposed to something that works along the lines of W13’s Horror material. They sounded good and the crowd was rather responsive to them in a positive sense which is all that matters..

“Transylvania 90210” by Wednesday 13

Artist: Wednesday 13
Title: “Transylvania 90210: Songs of Death, Dying, and the Dead”
Label: Roadrunner Records
Release Date: 4/12/2005
Genre: Horror Punk
Rating: 3.5/5

With the Murderdolls on hiatus, lead singer Wednesday 13 would release a solo album and his first would be “Transylvania 90210: Songs of Death, Dying And The Dead”. Fans of the ghoulish Horror Punker who picked this one up would find a ghastly and grim cornucopia of fiendish goodies just waiting to be tasted and the end result was something that took its queue from those late night Chiller Theater films. If you don’t know much about the singer, well he is very easily described as somewhat akin to Marilyn Manson (only not as intensely scary), Alice Cooper, and KISS with a little bit of Twisted Sister thrown in for good measure. The music is raucous and thumping and its lyrical content rather witty. He proves this right off the bat with the song “I Walked With A Zombie” as he sings “beauties on duty in this horror movie, make me spill my guts with just one touch”. There is a great video for this song that blends footage of the band in with the Horror classic “Night Of The Living Dead”. “Bad Things” is an anthem for those who simply want bad things to happen to other people while “I Want You Dead” is rather self explanatory don’t you think.

Wednesday 13 @ Club Europa (10/11/2007)

I’ve enjoyed Wednesday 13’s music since I first heard the album “Fang Bang” and after catching him as an opener for Alice Cooper I was excited to find him doing a gig in Brooklyn. That night I took a trek down to the old neighborhood of Greenpoint to see what was brewing at Europa and would find W13 and his crew performing with Anti-Product as openers. It was a dark and stormy night when Wednesday 13 brought his “Ghouls On Parade” tour into New York City for a visit, and if you knew what was bad for you there would be no avoiding this devilishly good time. The scene of the crime would be Greenpoint Brooklyn’s Club Europa which as I approached I had realized was formerly the location of a Chinese restaurant that I used to go to with family in my younger years. As a club I admit that it is quite cool looking on the inside and has a decent bar downstairs to hang out in before you hit the venue itself which is on the second floor. The upstairs area offers a small but comfortable stage, several lounge areas and a decent dance floor where the crowd can convene to enjoy the bands. There is also a larger bar off to one side and there’s plenty of room to move around over there as well should you decide on that part of the club. It certainly had a Gothic Shock Rock feel tonight and this made it all the better based on the participants in the evenings festivities. “Ghouls On Parade” would be a tour that featured not only Wednesday 13 and his fellow zombie rockers but also finds them supported by the bands Anti-Product and Creature Feature. Trashlight Vision was supposed to be on this as well but sadly would disband just before the tour was to set to begin. I made sure to get there early enough tonight since I had heard so much about the openers as well that I knew I needed to determine what was up for myself. Here is what the story is.

“Walk Among Us” by Misfits

Artist: Misfits
Title: Walk Among Us
Label: Ruby/Slash Records
Release Date: March, 1982
Genre: Horror Punk
Rating: 5/5 (Hell, if it were up to me it’s get a 9/5)

Back in the days before he fell totally in love with his own perceived awesomeness and launched his turgid solo act, Glenn Danzig fronted one of the finest and most unique of the American Punk bands, namely the Misfits (1977-1983), proof that not everything about New Jersey has to suck. When it comes to what would later ludicrously be dubbed “Horror Core,” there existed no better exponent of a genre that drew inspiration from horror movie culture, cheesy sci-fi flicks, and serial murder, and considering how far reaching the Misfits’ baleful influence proved to be over the three decades since their first recordings, their DIY legacy is even more impressive in retrospect. Possessed (pun intended) of the simplest of drum techniques — basically a “whomp-whack” that would have been at home on many early rockabilly tunes, unless sped up for the moshier numbers — a three chord buzz saw sound on guitar, and Danzig’s unmistakable vocals (simultaneously melodic as Hell and rather intentionally goofy/silly, depending on the song), the Misfits defined the genre they helped create, and their output sounds as fresh today as it did when first experienced.

The 69 Eyes @ Blender Theatre at Gramercy (6/20/2007)

The 69 Eyes are a very appealing band and while we were originally latecomers to their sound, we have made up for lost time in the support of their unique brand of Gothic Hard Rock. This would be our third time seeing the band and the added plus would be the opening slot by Wednesday 13. To read and see more about this show just scroll past the logo below.

While I have only been following The 69 Eyes for about four years I have to admit that I have aimed to make up for lost time by bringing the readers of the website up to speed on them should they have been in the same boat as I. Many people might not realize this but the band has been together almost 18 years and while other groups can claim this honor and beyond, there are choice few who have kept the exact same lineup as when they began. Yes, The 69 Eyes have not had a change in their membership roster since they all decided to play together back in their hometown of Helsinki, Finland. Originally more of a Trash Glam band that had a very New York vibe to it they became a Dark Gothic Hard Rock act several years ago and have continued to mold and shape the way this genre is enjoyed by fans worldwide. Tonight they would bring their show to the newly opened Blender Theatre (which is also known as The Gramercy Theatre to some) and have Fair To Midland and Wednesday 13 as their special guest openers. Sadly, I would miss Fair To Midland and this was a shame since I not only enjoyed and reviewed their EP for the site – but also since the band was celebrating their full length debut album that has been released on the Serjikal Strike Records company run by Serge Tankian of System Of A Down. The buzz that they are receiving is well-deserved and sure to find them not being on so early in a touring roster very soon. I am positive that I will have many chances to catch them in the future.
