The Misfits were nothing less than a ground breaking group when they formed so long ago and delivered unto the macabre music maniacs their unique brand of Horror Punk. While many lineup changes have occurred since the earlier days, the band now finds bassist Jerry Only accompanied by drummer Robo and guitarist Dez Cadena. Tonight for Halloween 2008 the band would perform a killer set of material with special guest openers Johnny B. Morbid, Until Destiny and Martyrd. We were on point to document the performance and also to rock out in proper attire for the night. Scroll past the logo below to be taken to our item.

Halloween Night in New York City is generally an unforgettable time and when you add to this fact that it was a Friday and was going to find me at The Misfits show at my home away from home venue of B.B. King’s, well, you can imagine the hell raising that was going to be taking place this evening. The interesting thing for me was that while a long time fan of the bands music I never caught them back in the day when Glen Danzig fronted them, but I did enjoy when the former singer did a short set of Misfits classics a few years ago during his tour and brought out the bands monster axe slinger Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein. The band is now comprised of bassist Jerry Only, guitarist Dez Cadena and drummer Robo who together deliver the classics like only this grouping possibly can. The spirit of the evening found me digging up an old mask and wig to walk among the costumed fans of the band that had convened inside B.B. King Blues Club and with the opening bands being three groups that I had already seen I was very excited to see what was going to take place this evening. Continue reading The Misfits @ B.B. This seventeen-track compilation can’t be easily pigeonholed into one genre category, but each tune is somehow horror-related and all are a coffinload of fun. Horror rock compilations are a dime a dozen and there are several that blow this one out of the water, but the sheer variety of sounds and tone here save the day, as well as the contrast of old stalwarts such as the Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black and Electric Frankenstein against She Wolves and Calabrese. Perfect for your Halloween party dance floor, this one’s just a stone hoot, especially the Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black’s classic “You Sley Me,” and the Groovie Ghoulies’ (not the cartoon characters) hilarious “The Beast With Five Hands.” It’s by no means perfect, but if you like this kind of stuff you won’t be disappointed. Artist: Balzac Title: “Deep Blue: Chaos From Darkism” Label: Misfits Records Release Date: 7/31/2007 Genre: Horror Punk Rating: 3.5/5
Balzac are the Japanese Horror Punk band who formed back in 1992 and styled much of their image and sound on the legendary Misfits. Their sound is very quick-paced and very up tempo in terms of its style and for the most part the stuff is rather catchy. Their album “Deep Blue: Chaos From Darkism” delivers twenty two energetic numbers that are sure to make any Punk Rocker an instant fan of what they are doing. The release opens with a rather strange piece which consists of sound effects and radio voiced dialogue and this blasts into “Godless”, a track that sets you up for what the band is all about. It didn’t hit me at first but I sure loved the next batch of tunes that followed it because the driving drum beat, quick guitar riffs and the very melodic backing choruses made me realize this album was going to be a lot of fun. While the songs “The Scare”, “In Those Days” and “D.A.R.K.” were immediately my favorites I found that they all blasted by me in less than 10 minutes in the same fashion as a Ramones track would and that’s good Punk in my book. It’s straight to the point of rocking you out and no time for explanations about what they are doing. I mentioned the stuff was catchy and it is so much the case that I was singing along with their “oh whoa oh” sections without any prompting to do so. As a Horror Punk band they might find some appeal in the fans of Wednesday 13, even though that Groovy Ghoul is a little more Metal than they are. Artist: Wednesday 13 Title: “Skeletons” Label: Independent Artist Release Date: 4/29/2008 Genre: Horror Punk Rating: 3.5/5
As soon as you begin spinning “Skeletons”, the third album by Horror Punker Wednesday 13, you will realize that the effort is far heavier than “Fang Bang” and more along the lines of his work as one of The Murderdolls. That’s not a bad thing at all since that stuff was rather good but when he morphed its morbid style deeper into his love of zombies and other things that go bump in the night the end result was quite interesting. “Skeletons” comes across as the singers most personal album to date as well and instead of dealing with movie monsters and grave robbing transvestites he deals with his own personal demons and matters that vividly bring to the front his own bout with depression. It opens up with “Scream Baby Scream” and he welcomes us to creature feature number thirteen – the track is the perfect intro music for the dark ride into his psychotic psyche and seems to line out quite a bit about his identity and raison d’etre. “Not Another Teenage Anthem” is more along the lines of stuff we got from “Fang Bang” and I rather enjoyed it since he was letting the listener know that this was apparently not your typical walk in the dark alley that he always managed to guide us through in relative safety. He did the same with “From Here To The Hearse” as it is loaded with the twisted display of love gone horribly wrong and a perfectly typical W13 twisted bit of wordplay. The album’s title track “Skeletons” really seems to open the closet doors on Wednesday’s inner being quite a bit as he sings about talking to them and how they are continually exposing his darkest secrets. His line about “the only thing that is real is the feeling that he doesn’t feel” is rather deep and showcases this as perhaps his most biographical track to date.
