Venue Down: NYC’s Highline Ballroom To Close

Perhaps you’ve seen me make the statement “New York City doesn’t want to be New York City anymore” on some of our social networking posts on Facebook or Twitter when it comes to places that I enjoy spending time and money at. The email statement that I am sharing came to the site email just a short time ago and to sum it up, the Highline Ballroom will close up soon. Read on.

The Official Statement:
Unfortunately after 12 years our landlord has decided not to renew Highline Ballroom’s lease. For over a year we were led to believe that a renewal was imminent, however it is now clear that the landlord has other plans for the building. This is obviously a growing trend within the New York real estate market impacting various entertainment venues and businesses.

We plan on reopening Highline Ballroom at a new location in the Chelsea/Meatpacking District and are currently looking at options. We hope to be able to announce our plans soon. In the meantime our final show date and programming will be announced shortly.

Infinity Concerts Announces Exclusive Tarja Turunen NYC Show In September 2018

It feels like we’ve got Finnish musical greats on the mind for the past week that led us to last night’s spectacular Nightwish show at the Playstation Theater. If you missed that one it was your loss for sure and I’ll be cobbling together a full review with a gallery as soon as my head stops rattling because I had SUCH a great time with so many friends at this one. Now, the reason this notice exists is to tell you that the folks over at Infinity Concerts have announced a special one-off NYC show by the original voice of Nightwish, the one and only Tarja Turunen. Take a look at their statement below the dramatic poster. I’ll opine some more afterwards, don’t worry.

“It’s been a while folks… but we have some news! New York City fans; get ready to welcome the one and only Tarja Turunen for a very special night September 6th; for an exclusive area show!”

PiercingMetal Thoughts: According to my records, it’s been a LONG time like they denoted and it was back in 2009 that Tarja last did a performance in NYC. It was a show that I was happy to have attended and it was all documented in words and images on a Concert Review that you can examine HERE. I’m really curious as to what kind of show this might be for the fans because Tarja has been experimenting with sound across the last few albums. She has done a few classical themed released, some Hard-edged Rock and even a Christmas Album (albeit a slightly darker one in tone). Considering this is a one-off show, and given the size of the Highline Ballroom, these tickets will likely sell out quick. You can get yours care of our Calendar entry HERE. What do you readers think about this special appearance? Will you be on point? Chime in down in the comments section below. All the topical notations are approved immediately.

Haken @ Highline Ballroom (9/2/2017)

Artist: Haken
Venue: Highline Ballroom (New York, NY)
Opener: Sithu Aye
Date: 9/2/2017
Label: InsideOut Records

Written By: Steven Stolper (copyright 2017) for PiercingMetal.com

Haken is a Progressive Metal band from England that has been steadily gaining popularity on this side of the pond. Last time around they packed Webster Hall’s Marlin Room and now it was onto bigger spaces. The Highline Ballroom is a bit larger in scope but I wonder if this show would have been held at Webster Hall if it was still open. Whatever the case, I do think Highline is a superior venue, with better stage, sound, and lighting. And no ceiling “thump” that The Marlin Room events often suffered from when The Grand Ballroom shows upstairs would get rowdy. As with Webster Hall though, there are late night events scheduled at Highline, so music, events can get pushed into early slots. This concert started earlier than posted, at around 7:10pm, not 7 30 as advertised. Sithu Aye, a proggy instrumental guitar shredder from Scotland opened. An enjoyable set, sort of what one might expect Joe Satriani to sound if he listened to a lot of modern Prog-Metal. I was disappointed to find the use of backing tracks for keyboards and some guitars. It kind of takes away from the live feel, and I don’t really see the point, considering that he actually brought a full band with him which included a second guitarist. Why not improvise, or play album keyboard parts on guitar?

The Details: Considering that the band is celebrating their 10th Anniversary I must admit to being way behind on this one, but there is no time like the present to get into some new and exciting music. Haken is a very fascinating listen in the world of Progressive Metal and with their appearance at the intimate Highline Ballroom you are not going to want to miss out on it. Thanks to the fine folks in the Marketing Division of the venue, we are proud to be putting some of our ardent readers into this show for free. Check out the details on how to participate.

When and Where: Saturday, September 2nd @ Highline Ballroom (431 W 16th St, NYC)

To Participate: I’ve decided to keep this an easy one and by saying that I mean I will be sticking to my usual formula of you readers giving me “3” things that you like most about the band if you have heard them already and if you are a newbie just give me “3” things that you are most interested in about their performance. Perhaps there are albums that “spoke” to you or concert appearances that sent you to the music shop to snag some of the band members earlier works. Just give me three solid answers and how important it is to be at this show. I know I make you work but I work here too so whining will not win out at all LOL. Make this good reading because the stuff remains on the website and can likely inspire new fans as well on how our freebies work. Writing “because they rock dude” is just too un-original and boring. I’ll be responding to the comments that I like most right below their answer. Kindly review some guidelines before entering your submission.

Win A Ticket For Dead Daisies At Highline Ballroom On 8/17/2017

The Details: One of the most exciting bands to hit the stages over the last year or so has got to be the Dead Daisies. Their sound is rocking and brings the love of the Hard Rock vibe to life with each and every song that they deliver. They are fronted by Jon Corabi who some of you might remember from Motley Crue and even The Scream if you were paying proper attention back in the day and he is joined by a cadre of awesome players that include Doug Aldrich who played with Whitesnake for a few years. They’ve just released an amazing live album and this show at the Highline Ballroom is going to raise the bar in terms of a quality Rock Show. Thanks to the fine folks in the Marketing Division of the venue, we are proud to be putting some of our ardent readers into this show for free. Check out the details on how to participate.
