Reflecting On The 2017 Deaths In Music

If you’ve been reading the PiercingMetal website for a while then you already know that I occasionally need to share the sad news about deaths in the entertainment world. Historically speaking, I’ve been doing them since the days when I had “PiercingMetal Musings” as a side blog that had not yet been integrated into the main site as you see now. Back then I always felt weird about doing such posts but as much as good news should be announced so should the bad stuff and as a known “voice” for the Metal Scene, I try to keep up on them when the news hits the wire. Now with this being said, there is no way possible for me to address every single one of them based on the size of the team and the time that we have so starting this year I will be doing a larger rundown of many of the names that I think you would know. Some have already been discussed in our “In Memoriam” Features, and those artists will be highlighted so you can examine the longer toast that we did. Let’s start from the beginning of the year and raise a glass to their memories one more time.

Southern Rock Legend Gregg Allman Has Died (1947-2017)

Gregg Allman (Photo by Charles Sykes)

Earlier today the news started circulating about another legend joining that Big Band In The Sky, as reports of the passing of the absolutely incredible Gregg Allman hit our screens and mobile devices. The iconic Southern Rock trailblazer was 69 years old and had been plagued by a bout of health concerns over the past few years. His passing would be from complications of liver cancer. Back in 2010 the musician received a liver transplant after being diagnosed with Hepatitis C and once a sufficient recovery time had gone by it was right back to the road for lengthy residencies at hallowed venues like NYC’s own Beacon Theatre. Residencies such as these only ceased to take place back in 2014 when Allman announced an end to live band activity. I only managed to catch one of the residency shows because while I was a “casual” fan by comparison to the friends I had, they were events that often sold out well in advance because the diehards would go to one, two and even the whole run of a single residency. This practice was based on the fact that the group often changed up the set and had numerous guest appearances in each and every city that they visited.

Presenting “The Laid Back Festival”

I held back on this one when I first learned about it but now with the full lineup roster for the festival being announced and tickets on sale in the coming days I figured it was high time to post something. This one is a creation of the legendary Gregg Allman and called “The Laid Back Festival – A Celebration Of Music And Food” – Dig it.

Festival - Laid Back Festival - 2016

“We’re excited to announce the FULL LINEUP ‪#‎LaidBackFest‬ at Nikon at Jones Beach Theater on Saturday, July 23rd! Gregg Allman, Jason Isbell, America, The Marshall Tucker Band, Jaimoe’s Jasssz Band, Devon Allman, Gabriel Kelley, and Levon! On Sale Friday at 12pm”

Here’s the poster for the NY Region show. It’s going to be at the Nikon at Jones Beach theater which is cool since there is a small beach right there that allows for some additional fun provided the weather is nice enough.

PiercingMetal Thoughts: So what do you think about this one? Are any of the bands of interest to you? I know that I enjoy the stuff that Allman does and it would be nice to see both America and the Marshall Tucker Band at least once in my life. I’d also surely be interested in the food its supposed to be celebrating. It makes me think of the Food Truck and Rock Carnival that came through town last year. I barely got to sample the food truck stuff which sucked. I was ravenous by the end of the day thanks to that. If I go to this one, I am digging in for both sustenance and for the Foodspotting Account. Let me know what you think of this one in the comments section as always.
