“Absolute Hits” by Great White

Artist: Great White
Title: “Absolute Hits”
Label: Capitol Records
Release Date: 3/29/2011
Genre: Hard Rock
Rating: 3.75/5

2011 marked the 29th Anniversary for the band Great White and it would be wrong to say that they have not had an interesting if not sometimes dramatic history over those three decades. The band formed in 1978 and was active as Great White until around 2001 when original members opted out while others continued to tour and perform material from the bands classic era. It was one of these groupings and not the original lineup band that is associated with the terrible fire at The Station club that killed 100 people. “Absolute Hits” celebrates some of the bands best, and while I could never call myself one of the bands truest fans, there was a handful of songs that I still line out as favorites in the Melodic Hard Rock list that I keep in my head. Some of the older fans like myself might remember them as being one of the openers for Judas Priest’s “Defenders Of The Faith” tour while the slightly younger than that crowd recalls some fondness for the MTV hits that came care of the “Once Bitten” and “Twice Shy” albums. I’ll admit that I attended that Priest tour and was less than taken by Great White at the performance but this view was based on a pure, full on Judas Priest mentality. I simply didn’t want to see anyone else. That being said, the new compilation of “Absolute Hits” gives strong favor to the bands MTV era and that makes complete sense to me based on how much many of these tunes were being played on the network.

“The Best Of Great White 1986-1992” by Great White

Artist: Great White
Title: “The Best Of Great White 1986-1992”
Label: Capitol Records
Release Date: 11/2/1993
Genre: Hard Rock
Rating: 3/5

As much as I enjoyed a decent amount of the musical output from the band Great White I would be the first to say that I wasn’t their biggest supporter over the years. To me, their bluesy style was good enough to be easily accepted by many but it was nothing compared to the intense Thrash Metal that I was absorbing when they were on their rise. Of course as time went on I began to get into their stuff a little bit more than I had expected and this was primarily due to the bands beginning to appear on outlets of the day such as MTV. The band started getting some serious video rotation for their track “Rock Me” where they became a staple of the network and hence a lot more popular than they could have hoped to become. Not long after that a follow up track from the bands “Twice Shy” album received the same treatment. This was the tune “Once Bitten Twice Shy” which was a classic Ian Hunter Mott The Hoople track and a really good song when done by the Great White guys as well. Over the course of their career the band had released six albums up to the time that this compilation ends but oddly enough it only features music from five of these albums. Ten tracks are included from the following five releases “Shot In The Dark”, “Once Bitten”, “Twice Shy”, “Hooked” and “Psycho City” and with only two tracks coming from each amounts to nothing more than a teaser tray of the bands material but still something that is good enough to give the curious Hard Rock fan a nice taste about what they were capable of. The bands lineup for all the tracks is Jack Russell (vocals), Mark Kendall (guitars), Tony Montana (bass), Michael Lardie (keyboards) and Audie Desbrow (drums) and historically this is considered the bands classic lineup and most popular with the fans.

“Great Zeppelin: A Tribute To Led Zeppelin” by Great White

Artist: Great White
Title: “Great Zeppelin – A Tribute To Led Zeppelin”
Label: Deadline Records
Release Date: 3/16/1999
Genre: Hard Rock
Rating: 4/5

Thanks to all of the reunion discussions and anniversary releases that have been surrounding the legendary Led Zeppelin of late, I was moved to dig through my CD collection and give this gem of a live recording by eighties Blues Rock masters Great White another listen. In the bands earliest days they were one of the many groups who would earn their salt by doing Led Zeppelin covers as a part of their set and these songs were intermingled with their own originals. There aren’t many bands from this time period that can say different because that is very simply the thing that you did as an up and comer back in the day. The critical difference that is very clearly presented here is that Great White was able to pull it off with dead on clarity and resemblance to the original group in terms of the vocals and the instrumentation in the live sense. The concert presented on this CD was recorded in front of a sold out Galaxy Concert Theatre in California on 12/96 and it captures every moment so well that if you played it at the proper volume you would feel as though you were there yourself or that they band was in your home. The key appeal of this release as opposed to the many that would eventually follow it was that Great White sticks so close to the originals and there is very little deviation from that which we all know from the original studio recordings. While Plant’s own voice is unique on its own there are times were Jack Russell gets the note and phrasing so perfectly that if you closed your eyes you would think that it was Plant. Since this is an audio and not a video you really don’t need to close your eyes at all so keep them opened and enjoy yourself. The guitar playing of Mark Kendall is spot on as is the same case with all of the other members and together they deliver a lot of numbers that Led Zeppelin did not always deliver in concert themselves when they toured.
