Today was the first Saturday in May and that is a great day for fans of the comic book medium because its “Free Comic Book Day” and that means that participating retailers give their loyal customers a batch of comic books for nothing. I headed to my neighborhood comic shop of Galaxy Comics to see what was going on and it was nice to see the patrons picking up additional titles along with the free ones. Take a look at the shop from the entrance.
I snagged photos of some of the titles that were on the shelves for the sake of this post. There was a lot of great stuff for the taking that’s for sure. Every shop that participates does this differently and some places have a better selection than others but I am happy to report that the folks at Galaxy are on top of their game and have a whole lot for their patrons to choose from. We love “Free Comic Book Day” here at the PiercingMetal Command HQ and as you read this little announcement, its only three weeks away (or 21 days depending on how you like to mark out the countdown to such a thing). Now in case there are some new readers to the site who don’t even know what this is, let me explain that its a day that numerous comic book retail shops participate in an event where patrons get a bunch of comic books for free. It’s that simple and there are dozens of awesome free provisions to be had. Based on the demand many of the retails shops have a limit of five or so books so everyone gets to have something. It’s also super smart to go as early as possible so you get the ones you want. The reason I am posting this advance bit of news is because the Official Website link below has the entire rundown of what is coming out and trust me there are some goodies to be had. The ones I am most excited about are the “Civil War II”, “Suicide Squad”, “Rom Spaceknight”, “Phantom”, “The Tick” and “Captain America” to name a few. Take a look at the list and let me know what ones you are compelled to get your hands on.
Oh yeah and this is something I also always mention on FCBD. Be sure to bring some extra cash along with you to take advantage of the sales that many of the retailers have going on during the event. You can get some great discounts on action figures, collected editions and even back issues or other assorted doodads with your favorite heroes and villains on them. As you know we have been doing a lot of comic book stuff here on the PiercingMetal site whether it be covering the NY Comic Con or lining out the details of the latest issues from the folks at Marvel, DC Comics, Dark Horse, Valiant and more. That being said I am super stoked when the retailers and these companies decide to give a little back to their customers. I wanted to post this early enough in the day so readers were into a cup of coffee and something to eat before heading out to get online for some freebies. This is the comic book fan version of Record Store Day and while the main provisions will be free, there are also numerous sales going on that will make you want to have some cash along as well.
