This past Saturday was “Free Comic Book Day” and as a pretty close to lifelong comic book fan, I made a small pilgrimage around our Metropolis to visit a few of the local comic shops to see how they were doing things for this always special occasion. Before I begin, let me explain to the newbies about what this is. “Free Comic Book Day” is as simple as it sounds. One gets to enjoy a batch of free comic books at a participating retailer but its important to know that each shop has their own way of doing things. Sometimes you get a whole stack or something just a few issues that you can pick from the releases. My first stop on that First Saturday in May would be Galaxy Comics in Park Slope.
As a Bay Ridge resident, my regular comic book store is their Bay Ridge branch located right next to the Alpine Theater but they have not been doing FCBD at this location for a couple of years now. To enjoy the offerings from them I had to head down to Park Slope. Galaxy was permitting a maximum of “5” comics from the FCBD releases and it was already crowded just past 10AM. Can you predict the five choices that I would make at this location?
When I did the “Free Comic Book Day” video briefs compilation last year, I mused to myself about perhaps making this piece of the adventure a regular thing. Sure the videos are already on the Official YouTube Channel to be enjoyed by anyone that happens upon them but when one runs a website with this tenure one also must look to always expanding the content and keeping it interesting. This year, “Free Comic Book Day” arrives on what has been referred to as “Star Wars Day” and that aspect alone cemented the idea. As in the video post from last year I would once again be heading to a number of our local comic book shops to see what was going on. My first stop would be the Galaxy Comics store in Park Slope.

This past Saturday was “Free Comic Book Day” for 2023 and I’ve been a big advocate of the medium for quite a few years. To start off let’s review what FCBD is and its essentially a special day where comic book retailers or related book stores let you snag a batch of free branded comic books that were released in conjunction with the day. Every title says “Free Comic Book Day” across the top so you know. In the past I’ve done a longer video but this is the first time that I am doing the Shorts thing for our YouTube and with this post I’m collecting all of those together. You see, this year I made the decision to venture out a little bit and see what the comic book shops of the city had going on. My first stop on this adventure would be to Galaxy Comics in Park Slope.
The downside is that these Shorts are exactly that. Short. So that means I have sixty seconds or less to do my thing so I tried my best. I probably could have done a couple of sixty second clips but I was not thinking about that at the time. This is still new to me but onto the fun. This was the first time that I would be doing FCBD at this location of the Galaxy Comics as their Bay Ridge store was not participating this year. A bummer for me, but the only constant is change they say.
Today is “Free Comic Book Day” at your participating comic book retailer and its a time to rejoice and celebrate the comic book collecting hobby. There are so many awesome issues coming out on this special occasion so get to your closest place nice and early because its while supplies last. Be sure to bring some extra money though to take advantage of the sales that are happening at the same time. Enjoy.
