Artist: Misfits Title: “Friday The 13th” (Single) Label: Misfits Records Release Date: 5/13/2016 Genre: Horror Punk Rating: 4/5
Hailing from the upcoming EP that bears the same name comes the title track single of “Friday The 13th” by those purveyors of prime Horror Punk in the Misfits. It’s the perfect downloadable present for your mobile device music library and of course has been timed to capture the spirit of this haunted non-holiday date. The song is a catchy one and has been penned by Only who sings (of course) and plays the bass while Jerry Other and Eric Arce handle the guitar and drum duties. The groove is pretty straightforward in terms of a Misfits track and is very melodic when it gets to the chorus. I think that you’ll find yourself singing along rather quickly when that part comes up because I was. The end was very brooding and dramatic which sold it even more for me. Its hard to describe for you here though and its better to listen to. I loved the cover art which you might notice shows the famous Misfits Fiend sporting a slightly Jason-esque design which I thought was awesome. Continue reading “Friday The 13th” (Single) by Misfits→
Artist: Misfits Title: “Vampire Girl”/”Zombie Girl” Label: Misfits Records Release Date: 12/11/2015 Genre: Horror Punk Rating: 4/5
The latest musical works from The Misfits come care of the double CD of new singles with “Vampire Girl” and ”Zombie Girl” who have been paired up on this disc for the general malaise of mankind. Since there are only two tracks I’ve tossed my thoughts together on each of the tunes.
“Vampire Girl” – With “Vampire Girl” there is a slightly 1950’s vibe to the track which doesn’t surprise me since Only had recently issued the expanded version of “Project 1950”. For those in the unaware that is the album with Misfits versions of classic tunes from the era. “Vampire Girl” is a straightforward tune with a four on the floor beat that sings of romance with a very different kind of lady of the night. One that always prefers red over white unless we are talking blood cells since she’d likely enjoy both in that case. It’s a catchy tune for sure and I found myself humming along with it after only a couple of listens. Here’s an interesting side not. When Misfits last played in NYC, Only debuted the track for the audience and called up Miss Alicia Vigil of the She-Demons to play some bass for it. Remember that name going forward. Now onto the second tune on the disc. Continue reading “Vampire Girl”/”Zombie Girl” by The Misfits→
Artist: Misfits Title: “Horror Xmas” Label: Misfits Records Release Date: 12/3/13 Genre: Horror Punk Rating: 4/5
I have to admit that I was sad to have missed out on this particular holiday horror treat when it first fell off of Santa’s musical sleigh but I don’t think the readers will mind me unwrapping it for their edification on this Christmas Eve of 2015. The three track EP by the legendary Misfits is a fun filled stocking stuffer that delivers a quick ride down the chimney and back with Punked up versions of songs like the theme from “How The Grinch Stole Christmas” in its “You’re A Mean One Mr. Grinch”. As it played I was amazed at just how many lines of that classic cartoon that I knew. I guess it worked when they aired it and influenced my young mind so many years ago. The “Island Of Misfit Toys” is a new original that owes a little bit to the Rankin Bass cartoon “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer” and their own Island Of Misfit Toys. The song is driving and very melodic and showcases a different side of The Misfits that might appease listeners based on its difference. It all closes out with a favorite tune of mine with “Blue Christmas” which was famously sung by Elvis Presley and an unnamed little girl in “The Year Without A Santa Claus” cartoon special.
