“The Sons Of Odin” by Manowar

Artist: Manowar
Title: “The Sons Of Odin”
Label: Magic Circle Music
Release Date: 10/24/2006
Genre: Heavy Metal
Rating: 4/5

Manowar is one of the bands who will always do things in a big way because when it came to Metal that is very simply how they always did it. Why change the process when it came to releasing a new single on the millions of fans that they have built in their army over the years. Their new song “The Sons Of Odin” comes to the world on a very special edition CD/DVD EP. Slip cased with a fold out poster inside the Manowar acolyte is treated to live versions of two of their songs as well as an instrumental and two immortal editions of the new material. It also includes a DVD which will be fun for many of the fans because it includes a full documentary on the Manowar Fan Convention which finds the organizer describing how it all went down. There is a lot of commentary footage and photos on what the rest of us missed at this event and I am sure this will be something that continues going forward since Manowar is very dedicated to their fan base legions and their overall loyalty. The new songs are exactly what you would expect from the band, epic in scale and scope as well as nice and heavy. Thundering music and glass-breaking vocal lines (a 5.1 surround sound mix is also featured on the DVD). We also get a sneak peak of the double live DVD that is coming soon and some rehearsal footage. The concert film will show the group at work during their “Demons, Dragons & Warriors World Tour” and it should be a good one. Start polishing that sword, Manowar is coming.

“Wild Life And Wild Times” by Eric Adams & Chester Moore

Artist: Eric Adams & Chester Moore
Title: “Wild Life And Wild Times”
Label: Magic Circle Music
Release Date: 7/18/2006
Style: Documentary
Rating: 5/10

I wasn’t really sure what to expect when I popped this DVD into the player but when it began I felt myself transported to a world more like something found on the Discovery Channel than anything at all musical. The release itself is a documentary format of several hunting expeditions that Eric Adams (lead singer of Manowar) had gone on with hunting expert Chester Moore. Together the pair takes you on a journey across America as you are “treated” to the means of finding and eventually taking down several kinds of big game as well as some different kinds of fish. Some of the visual aspects of this are not for the faint of heart as they are hunting and killing the animals; I don’t recommend this if you are any kind of animal rights activist or a member of PETA. Fans of the one and only Ted Nugent might enjoy this more since the singer/guitarist is also an avid hunter like Adams. Perhaps Uncle Ted’s a bit better since I saw Eric miss a few times and hardly think that this happens when the Nuge has you in his sights. Several instrumental compositions that Eric wrote to go along as the soundtrack to the video are included but they are nothing special and serve better as the score for the film than they do on their own. I would have rather heard Manowar, and I was surprised that he did not use any of their music to go along with it. The sound is epic and film-score like and works but clearly it is more for background than anything else. Outside of the beginning sequence of the film there is not much that reminds you of Eric’s Metal standing which is a shame as footage like this might have added something to this piece for the viewers. Some of the scenery is stunning and the commentary interesting but the whole release is for a specific demographic and nothing more. While I myself am clearly carnivorous, I am not a hunting enthusiast or an outdoorsman so I did not take a lot away from this release.

“Hell On Earth” Vol. 1 by Manowar

Artist: Manowar
Title: “Hell On Earth: Volume I”
Label: SPV Records
Release Date: 5/24/2001
Genre: Heavy Metal
Rating: 6/10

The Kings Of Metal – The One and Only Manowar have begun a series of DVD releases that include both live concert footage and a great amount of backstage and interview footage. Those that have ever witnessed Manowar on the concert stage can attest to the larger than life nature of this legendary band. This DVD proves to the world that the activity behind the scenes is just as large if not wilder. While I enjoyed this single DVD piece to some degree I have to speak on some of the issues I found with it. First off, you are not able to single out the concert performances from the speaking sections and bantering. This might prove to be annoying to those that simply want to watch the live concert and bypass the talk. Everything as a result is mixed together and should you want to see any particular section you need to return to the main menu and choose it from the list. Another problem I caught was a little segment during one of the live concerts. It was some risky footage with scantily or non-clothed women. Of course Metal and Sex are often in the same sentence, but younger fans Parents might not appreciate the lack of warning on this segment. It was on the intense side, and honestly not for young viewers. Older fans will love it I am quite certain.

“Hell On Earth” Vol. 4 by Manowar

Artist: Manowar
Title: “Hell On Earth: Volume IV”
Label: SPV Records
Release Date: 9/13/2005
Genre: Heavy Metal
Rating: 8/10

Manowar continue along with their collection of DVD’s with the “Hell On Earth” series. This is the fourth volume in the series and comes to us courtesy of the people at SPV Records. This edition is probably the most comprehensive of the entire batch and it comes in perhaps the most well-designed package that I have ever seen. Loaded with photos and artwork on its numerous fold-out compartments this truly makes for an impressive addition to your DVD Collection. There is also a great little booklet in the box that features not only excellent band pictures but also has a discography and videography of the Magic Circle Music family products. MCM is a company run by bassist DeMaio. One of the features on the first DVD which is the main part of the program, is the opportunity to decide how you will watch it. As there is live footage along with crowd interaction and band stuff I was glad to be able to simply watch all of the live clips in one sitting. It’s great to include some of that stuff, but many viewers might want to get to the meat of the piece and that is very simply Manowar in concert. Too often bands release products like this and you have no choice on how to watch it. The lineup for the DVD stands at Eric Adams, Joey DeMaio, Scott Columbus and Karl Logan. The band is still amazing in performance and a legend in Heavy Metal music. The DVD does not feature too much of the bands classic material, but that makes sense since there are three other additions to enjoy.

Manowar @ B.B. King Blues Club (6/19/2005)

Artist: Manowar
Venue: B.B. King Blues Club (New York, NY)
Opener: Rhapsody & Holy Hell
Label: SPV Records
Date: 6/19/2005
Genre: Heavy Metal

The show was a late one for B.B. King’s with a start time of 9:00 for the first band. It was fun for as I waited on line I bumped into Ken Kelly (artist of some of the excellent Manowar covers). When he realized it was me he asked if I was indeed getting in but I was lucky to have my own ticket for this sold out show. Sadly the night started off bad for a couple of kids who were either too drunk or had sampled something else and were being escorted out. This was a $50 show people; let’s use the brain for a change. My Editor Ken would be missing this show due to illness, and when I thought that I was at least going to be able to use his photo pass, I was discouraged to find that none of them had been granted for the performance after all. It would have been excellent to shoot pics of this Legendary Metal band.
