“Happy Halloween” 2018: Rockers Divulge Their Favorite Horror Films

Last year, I had asked what the very favorite Horror films might be among a wide assortment of the musicians that I had met over the last few years while covering shows and special events. The fun disclosures can be reviewed HERE for those who are new to our offerings and might have missed that when it first ran. Yesterday, I decided to do it again with some of the people that I didn’t get around to that last time and while there are only a few, its still fun to find out what spooks some of our talented friends. Let’s get down to business in finding out what some of Hard Rock and Metal’s best and brightest find to be their favorite and scariest films and what makes this be the case. Scroll down…..if…you…dare……Bwahahahaha!!!!

Margarita Monet (Edge Of Paradise): What i love about Horror films is that they are so much fun to watch with with friends, I wouldn’t watch them alone, it’s way more fun to be terrified together. I love the classics like the “A Nightmare On Elm Street”. But for my favorite, I would have to go with “The Ring”, and not just because the movie was so great, it had all the right bone chilling elements, but watching it with my friends in middle school and acting out as the creepy girl coming out of the TV for weeks later, just brings really fun memories about those days, and maybe we’ll give “The Ring 2” a chance.

“Metal Mike” Chlasiak (Halford, Sebastian Bach, Solo): I liked “Hellraiser” because the main character (Pinhead) looked like the evil brother of The Metal God.

New Year’s Music Resolutions For 2013: Part 4

new year's music resolutions

When I do my NY Comic Con coverage, I always refer to the fourth chapter or segment as being my “Fantastic Fourth” edition since its kind of aimed at the comic book of the same name. Since I could not come up with anything different as I compiled all of these resolution responses you will just have to bear with me as I use it once more to proudly welcome readers to our “Fantastic Fourth” chapter of “New Year’s Music Resolutions for 2013”; That’s all I have for you now, so get thee reading.

1. Erik Kliuber (Gypsyhawk): For 2013 I resolve to keep doing what I’ve been doing with music. Writing, performing, and learning new music is a state of being. I have to force myself to write a little to a lot every day I’m home. I’ll have very limited free time next year due to touring and having to work shitty jobs between tours. The next album has to be even better than “Revelry and Resilience”.

2. Elizabeth Schall (Dreaming Dead): To embrace my fears, doubts, my convictions, embrace my truth and turn each one of them into music.

3. Carmine Appice (Cactus/Vanilla Fudge/King Kobra): My New Year’s Music Resolution is to gig as much as I can with all my different bands from my past!!!

“Within One” by Dreaming Dead

Artist: Dreaming Dead
Title: “Within One”
Label: Ibex Moon Records
Release Date: 1/20/2009
Genre: Blackened Thrash Metal
Rating: 3.5/5

“Within One” is the powerful debut CD from California’s Dreaming Dead and it comes to us on Ibex Moon Records. The band is an interesting mix of Old School Thrash Metal meets a crushing Black Metal/Death Metal crossover and judging by the musical chops laid down on the release it is clear that the band is good at what they do. Fronted by guitarist/vocalist Elizabeth Schall, the band offers up several quick comparisons in style and theme. There is a lot of the vocal style of Cradle Of Filth’s Dani being done by Elizabeth and that intrigued me especially with her being female. It’s not a tone that I expected to come from a woman but she also sings in the conventional guttural growl that fans of this kind of band would expect in such a band. It opens with the uncompromising “Stairs Into The Vortex” and with this one the band immediately draws you into the mayhem that will keep you on the edge of your seat for the rest of the release. Elements of bands like Death and Slayer abound and maybe a little Opeth for good measure based on the creative melodic changes and interludes that they present. It was cool to find slow changes and mellower sections coming into play before the blistering blast beat drumming on tracks like “Putrid Is The Sky” and this one is perhaps my first favorite on the release. Elizabeth is joined on guitar by Leslie Medina which makes the outfit equal parts male and female and I had to say that it was really cool to find two female members in a band of this kind as opposed to their being another symphonic thing where the girls are singing opera or playing keyboards. While I love those kinds of bands, I just mean that it is nice to see some serious ass kicking being done by women in a Metal band that is an up and comer. It’s also good for the young female singers to be who aspire more to the like of Angela Gossow than Tarja Turunen or Annette Olzon.
