What a year 2010 has been for the Metal Republic. From the beginning it was a tight one in terms of the ever fluctuating economy that seemed to strangle the very manner in which we do things but still the fans pressed on and supported the music that they loved so much. It was a year that first smacked us in the jaw when it took bassist Peter Steele from Type O Negative from us and then before we could catch our collective breath and move on, the cruel hand of fate would take Ronnie James Dio from this plane of existence and leave us all astonished, hurt and angry. The loss of such a powerful force for Metal’s good was bound to find the releases that celebrated better times being delivered to the fans and that is never a bad thing if it helps ease the pain of loss just a little bit. The first such issue that I found being released would be the Blu-ray edition of Dio’s “Holy Diver Live” DVD that originally hit the streets in 2006. Having reviewed that piece before I decided to re-present my words from that article and add a couple of other notes to make it a little more current. I’ll close out by citing any visible differences between that issue and the higher definition Blu-ray version. Read on.

“Good To Be Bad” by Whitesnake

As part of their 30th anniversary celebration the one and only Whitesnake returns with their first studio album in over a decade and from the sound of it, this was definitely something that was worth waiting for. It’s almost hard to believe that it has been that long since we have seen a new studio release from the band since they have been on the touring circuit consistently and have made sure to keep their fans in live albums, videos and greatest hits compilations that are a steady reminder of one of Rocks true powerhouse bands. “Good To Be Bad” is an incredible return to the public eye for the band and I cannot even think of anyone who would argue with me about the statement once they hear the new recording. It begins with the crunching “Best Years” as Coverdale seems to reflect in heavy fashion about his past in the role of singer and this is quite the kick off to what is in truth a smashing effort. “Can You Hear The Wind Blow” is next up and loaded with tasty hooks and solid drumming along with a chorus that will have you jumping in place when it kicks in. The tune could have easily been the albums opener as well based on its overall strength. When “Call On Me” came up as their third track I felt it really reminded me of the stellar “Whitesnake” CD from back in the eighties as it had that vibe to it with perhaps a little bit of the Coverdale Page project thrown in for good measure.

Whitesnake “Good To Be Bad” CD Listening/Performance @ The Cutting Room (4/10/2008)
This evening’s fun was one of those cool rare opportunities that stick in your memory for years after they happen and this particular one focused on the eighties Metal giants Whitesnake who were presenting their latest CD to a select group of media entities. The new album is called “Good To Be Bad” and comes care of SPV Records which is one of PiercingMetal.com’s favorite providers of Metal content in terms of releases and bands. I had to admit that I felt like a fan boy myself when I learned that singer David Coverdale would be present to meet with us at the intimate setting of The Cutting Room in NYC. This turned to pure euphoria when I learned that joining Coverdale would be guitarist Doug Aldrich and that the pair would entertain us all with new and classic Whitesnake songs. I couldn’t let the legions of Metal heads that read my words feel left out of the event so I present the full scope of the night along with many photos that can be enjoyed by scrolling past the logo below.

The Metal airwaves of the eighties rumbled with their powerful chords and albums such as “Slide It In” and “Whitesnake” forever became cemented into the hearts of Hard Rock and Metal fans around the world. The band which was actually formed back in 1977 by former Deep Purple front man David Coverdale achieved the largest level of notoriety during that decade based on a powerhouse lineup and incredible songs that were radio staples, and had videos that were in constant rotation on MTV. In today’s music world Coverdale fronts a completely new lineup of players and is ready to unleash on the world an incredible piece of music with “Good To Be Bad”. It’s an album that will not only appeal to those who seek the best reminders of their favorite Hard Rock of the past but also one that works well in today’s scene as consistently solid and a reminder about why this band is as loved as it is.

Is there any question about “Holy Diver” being one of the most important Heavy Metal albums of all time? The overall impact of his solo debut led Ronnie James Dio and his band on a path to Metal dominance and while he would release great music afterwards none were as appealing on the whole as this recording. Songs like “Stand Up And Shout”, “Rainbow In The Dark” and title track “Holy Diver” became synonymous with the strength of Heavy Metal music and its power over the legions of the night. In 2005 during the tail end of his “Master Of The Moon” tour Dio treated the fans to a full performance of this classic album. Thanks to Eagle Vision the supporters of the legendary entertainer will get to relive this concert once again in the comforts of home where they control the volume and the mood. The concert was also released as a double live CD, but the owners of that product will immediately notice that the layout of the music is different. To make sense of the “Holy Diver” presentation, the first CD features that portion of the show, while CD2 features all the remaining songs. On the DVD, which is a single disk we get the entire show from start to finish just as it was performed had you attended one of these shows. If you did not purchase the CD, then here is a good way to make amends and fill a Metal need. Overall the show is very well done, but be aware that by this point Dio no longer does over the top visual shows.
