Doro @ B.B. King Blues Club (6/5/2007)

Doro is one of the true Queens of Metal and when she comes to town we like to make sure to be there to report on the proceedings. It’s always a great time and this gig found the singer celebrating her new DVD. She would bring Chris Caffery along as her guitarist and the musician would do double duty by opening up the show himself. To learn more just scroll past the logo below and enjoy.

“Sprechen Sie Deutsch?” Well I have to admit that it might help you just a little bit with this new release by Doro Pesch – Heavy Metal’s ever-reigning Queen. Presenting “20 Years: A Warrior Soul On The Road” a concert and documentary film that brings you along as Doro and her band tours for her latest album “Warrior Soul”. If your answer was “No” when it comes to understanding German well don’t worry all that much because when you pop in the DVD to your player it will only annoy you for a moment or two. The release is a double DVD set and it’s broken up into two unique parts with the first DVD being the documentary and movie footage while the second a full mind-blowing concert experience. It’s pretty amazing to find Doro doing this for twenty years already but here we are and what better way to celebrate it than with a great look at how she does it with comments from the singer and the band. I’ve broken this up into sections based on the DVD to better explain each part a little better.

“Warrior Soul” by Doro

Artist: Doro
Title: “Warrior Soul”
Label: Locomotive Music
Release Date: 5/23/2006
Genre: Hard Rock
Rating: 3.5/5

Doro Pesch has been holding the banner of Metal triumph high for many years as one of the most dedicated females to ever approach the business. From the time she fronted Germany’s Warlock through her very productive solo years, you always knew that Doro was out to deliver the goods. Her new album “Warrior Soul” brings her back closer to the work she did years ago with Warlock than ever before with songs like “Haunted Heart” and “Strangers Yesterday”. Both tracks holding a solid classic Metal vibe that is today referred to as “Old School” by some and “Traditional” by those that hate the other term. Fronting a band comprised of Joe Taylor (guitar), Nick Douglas (bass), Johnny Dee (drums), and Oliver Palotai (keyboards) she is once again on top of the game. Metal bangers around the world might also find it interesting to know that bassist Nick has toured with Chris Caffery while Mr. Palotai performs regularly with Melodic Metal juggernaut Kamelot. There are quite a few tasty and catchy tracks here to enjoy and she even gives you a couple of songs sung in German. I would have liked to hear them in English and that would have been a great idea for bonus tracks but alas we get an acoustic version of the album title instead. Listeners should be aware that this specific song comes after “Shine On” ends so let it run before you stop the CD. I liked the love song feel of “In Liebe Und Freundschaft” and while I did not understand it at all, Doro certainly seems to be able to make a song like this work. “Thunderspell” and “Strangers Yesterday” should find some fans since they are very up tempo numbers but nothing that has not been done by Doro before.

“Classic Diamonds” by Doro

Doro Pesch is one of the most recognized Metal Maidens in the genre’s history. She packed a hell of a punch fronting Warlock and then her own solo efforts but for some reason she decided to join the crop of talented performers who mixed their music with classical performers and release a live album. As a casual fan of some of her material, especially the Warlock years, I had doubts on how effective this release would be and very simply her material does not work with classical accompaniment. My favorite song of all time with her is “All We Are” and I still remember the video, but this rendition sounded more like something Nickelback would do on a bad day. “I Rule The Ruins” has its moments but nothing like the impact of the original. I then started to wonder if I was an old stick in the mud when my jaw dropped as she began an acoustic and softly spoken “Breaking The Law” (yes the Judas Priest one). I’m sorry Ms. Pesch but that is the song that spawned a million air guitars, and I should not be thinking of walking pastoral fields during it. Luckily the orchestra kicks in to some effect but then she starts screaming instead of singing and is joined by Udo Dirkschneider (Accept) who sounds just terrible singing this track. Don’t get me wrong as there are Accept songs that I love and that fit Udo just fine but Priest? I’m sorry man this is not your thing. Doro is a talented woman who has put forth several solid Metal efforts but I think this should have been thought of a little more before being executed. Not every performer works well with an orchestra and for this to be done the best, the classical side needs to expand on your original work of music. More times than not the classical elements become background music to a Hard Rock band that is also present. Too much like the Metallica effort which I also felt was sub-par. There is a good booklet inside with photos and lyrics to her songs but besides that there is little I enjoyed about this album. The Classic Night Orchestra themselves do a fine job as does Doro’s band but together I felt this was a mess.
